The Little Ice Age La Pequeña Edad de Hielo Starting around the beginning of the 14th Century and lasting until the mid-19th Century, Europe began to experience a series of catastrophic misfortunes. Volcanic Eruptions / Erupciones volcánicas Between 1275 and 1300, there were four major volcanic eruptions. This triggered the Little Ice Age, which lasted until the 1800’s. Cold summers following the eruptions caused an expansion of sea ice, causing temperatures in Europe to drop. Rivers and lakes froze. Ocean Currents Changed / Las corrientes oceánicas cambiaron Normal Gulf Stream The Gulf Stream during the Little Ice Age Corriente del Golfo normal La Corriente del Golfo durante la Pequeña Edad de Hielo The Gulf Stream carries warm ocean currents to northern Europe. But the expansion of sea ice forced the Gulf Stream south, causing Europe to become even colder. More Volcanic Eruptions / Mas Erupciones volcánicas The changes in oceanic currents altered pressures on the continental shelves, which contributed to an increase in earthquakes and even more volcanic eruptions. This made Europe even colder. Decreased Sunspots/ Manchas solares disminuidas Sunspots cause the sun to get hotter. They occur in normal cycles. However, there was very little sunspot activity at that time. This further cooled the Earth, worsening the effects of the Little Ice Age. The Great Famine / La gran hambruna Beginning in the spring of 1315, cold weather and heavy rains decimated crops and livestock across Europe. Class warfare and political strife destabilized formerly prosperous countries as millions of people starved. The Great Famine lasted until the early 1320s. The Black Death / La muerte negra The food shortages of the Little Ice Age weakened human immune systems while allowing rats to flourish. This caused an outbreak of the bubonic plague, which is transmitted by rats and fleas. The Black Death killed an estimated 75 million people, 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s population. Warfare / Guerra Starving refugees fled their homes in search of places where they could find food. In one empire after another, the sick and starving blamed governments for their misery. As a result, the Little Ice Age brought a surge of revolts and civil wars. Rebel and state armies alike used farm laborers, who joined refugees in spreading disease. In the end, millions more died. Witch Hunts / Caza de brujas Without the advanced scientific knowledge we have today, people did not know what caused the catastrophes facing Europe. In 1484, Pope Innocent VIII claimed that there were witches and blamed them for the cold temperatures and resulting misfortunes plaguing Europe. This ushered in an era of hysteria, accusations and executions. Europeans needed to trade with other lands in order to survive. Out of necessity, they would soon develop new technologies which would end up changing the world as they knew it.
