Shoulder CONDITIONS OF THE SHOULDER Rotator cuff tears occur in the muscles surrounding the shoulder blade. The damage can be from instant injury or prolonged overuse. Frozen shoulder happens when inflammation causes pain and stiffness in the shoulder, limiting movement. Bursitis affects the fluid-filled sacs that cushion shoulder joints following excessive use or rotator cuff injuries. Tendonitis is the result of excessive strain from things like sports or arthritis and usually impacts the rotator cuff, compromising shoulder stability. Tendon tears, like tendonitis, are the result of excessive strain and tears can be partial or complete and can split from the bone. Impingement occurs when the shoulder blade puts pressure on underlying soft tissue as the arm is lifted, damaging the rotator cuff and bursa. GUNSLINGER SHOULDER L3960 Accommodates abduction of 45 degrees and/or external rotation, stabilizes the shoulder by utilizing weight distribution, easily moldable aluminum frame lined with soft, washable padding, adjustable quick snap release buckles and Velcro closures. The muscles and tendons allow you to rotate your wrist. wrist CONDITIONS OF THE WRIST CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME is caused by overuse or repetitive motion. The tendons swell and put pressure on the median nerve, resulting in numbness. STRAINS occur when tendons become inflamed. Tendons can tear away from the muscle, leading to tendonitis. TENDONITIS is a strained, inflamed or slight tear of the tendons. Causes tenderness, pain and swelling. SPRAINS are when an action forces the wrist beyond its natural range of motion. Causes stretching and tearing of ligaments around the wrist, resulting in pain, swelling and bruising. FRACTURES are the breaking of a bone due to excessive force. The most common wrist fracture, the Colles’ Fracture, occurs when the hand is used to break a fall. AFTER CAST REMOVAL, more stabilization is necessary during healing and physical therapy process if the wrist or hand is severely weakened. It is an important joint for walking and running and can become injured during simple activities. The ankle contains fibrous tendons and ligaments. Tendons provide ankle motion and connect muscles in the lower leg to bones in the ankle and foot. Ligaments stabilize the ankle joint and connect bones. Ankle CONDITIONS OF THE ANKLE Tendonitis is inflammation or tearing of tendons, caused by stress or overuse. Pain, swelling, inflammation and irritation are common. Sprains are the stretching or tearing of the ligaments caused by inward twisting of the foot. Sprains can be mild to severe. Strains are inflammation of tendons that connect muscles to bones due to overuse. If untreated, a strain can cause tendonitis. Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot (plantar fascia) & supports the longitudinal arch. Pain begins as a dull ache in the heel or arch & is usually worst in the morning or after resting. Contusion occurs when there is a direct blow to the ankle, causing tenderness, limited range of motion, deep bruising and/or inflammation. Back CONDITIONS OF THE BACK Lumbar Disc Dysfunction is an injury to a disc in the lumbar region (l1-L5). This can result in pain, decreased range of motion, lumbar instability and loss of normal back function. Lumbar instability is described as excessive mobility of the lumbar spine due to ligament and/or muscle weakness. This results in pain and can also lead to possible disc dysfunction. Lumbar spine sprain occurs when the muscles or ligaments of the back are stretched or torn, resulting in pain and possible loss of function. This is common and debilitating injury and can be mild, moderate or severe. Lumbar Strain is the inflammation of tendons. Strains typically occur from repetitive or overuse and may cause pain. By partnering with the surgeon, Freedom’s practitioners ensure that a patient will have the best possible outcome for a functional prosthesis and outcome. The team approach of surgeon and prosthetist accomplishes a common goal: restored vitality. By consulting with a surgeon on the exact location of an amputation, sometimes even during surgery, our prosthetists can make sure the best components that benefit the patient will fit. The length of the limb and the amount of surface area for applying the prosthesis makes a big difference. For example, the more surface area there is at an amputation point, the lower the risk of pressure ulcers and blisters. It also increases the leverage area for applying the prosthesis which sets the patient up for better balance. Our team approach is all about making it easier for our patient to adapt to their prosthesis and get on with their life. While we recognize that having a prosthetic limb is certainly a lifestyle change, we believe that it does not have to be a lifestyle-ending one. We stay on top of and trained in all of the latest technologies, systems, and methods. Showing patients those options prior to surgery helps maintain mental wellbeing of the patient. IF YOU HAVE A PATIENT STRUGGLING WITH AN AMPUTATION, please call Freedom Prosthetics for a free consultation with our patient advocates. The early fitting of a prosthesis can offer you a positive alternative to using crutches, a walker or a wheelchair. While your residual limb fully heals and shapes, swelling lessens. A preparatory prosthesis prevents flexion contractures and allows the patient to complete their first round of physical therapy and reach a higher level of activity and regular lifestyle. Preparatory prostheses are built with many more adjustment capabilities for those initial changes every new amputee experiences. A preparatory prosthesis is generally worn for three to six months. After most of the shrinking has occurred in your residual limb, we will work with your physician to fit a long-term or definitive prosthesis. You call it a permanent prosthesis but it is not the only one you will wear during your lifetime. You will typically need a new definitive socket every 1-2 years & a complete new prosthesis every three to five years. Your definitive prosthesis can have a more finished look, be myo-electric, bionic, or an advanced prosthesis depending on your needs, capabilities, strength and insurance. Send them home in a limb protector. Limb protectors, above knee or below knee, minimize the effects of potential injury during the early stages of healing and rehab, provide easy access to bandages and dressings for attentive care, control swelling and edema, and help prevent flexion contractures. Softies, for trans-tibial amputees. Vascular surgeons who fear the application of any prosthetic socket for their dysvascular patients. The sockets are soft, non-constricting (when protocol is followed) and easy to remove at any time to address would concerns. It will protect the incision area from micro tears that occur as the patient repositions themselves in bed. Below knee and upper extremity shrinkers are made from a compressive fabric that promotes wound healing after amputation. They are used both for edema and stump shaping. The soft, smooth inner surface of the fabric ensures the stump is comfortable to wear. Shrinkers are generally worn immediately after suture removal 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are only removed for bathing until further advised by the prosthetist. Shrinkers are never worn at the same time under or with a prosthesis. LIMB PROTECTORS Above knee amputation. Must be fit by medical professional or prosthetist. Please call for sizing.
