Thank you for allowing us to be part of this remarkable journey. We cannot wait for the excitement to unfold at the Polocrosse Tournament! LETTER FROM THE SPONSOR TWK AGRI THE GAME OF POLOCROSSE What is polocrosse ? PLAYERS ALL THE PLAYERS AND SPECTATORS ENTER THE PREMISES AT THEIR OWN RISK. THEY UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF THE SPORT AND THE RISKS ASSOCIATED HEREWITH. THE OWNERS, ORGANIZERS, OFFICIALS, PLAYERS (AND THEIR EMPLOYEES) AND THE POLOCROSSE ASSOCIATIONS INVOLVED WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGE OR INJURY TO ANY PERSON OR PROPERTY WHATSOEVER, WHILE YOU ARE AT THE FIELDS OR DURBAN SHONGWENI CLUB PROPERTY. WE WILL FURTHER NOT BE LIABLE TO ANY PERSONS BENEFICIARIES FOR ANY CLAIMS. As the name implies, polocrosse is a combination of polo, la crosse and netball. It is played on horseback, each rider using a cane stick, made up of a polo stick shaft to which is attached a squash net type head with loose twisted thread net, in which the ball is carried. The stick may be of any length, usually 102 to 116cm overall. The ball is made of a thick-skinned sponge rubber approximately 31cm in circumference. Each player is permitted only one pony in each match or tournament, except in the case of an injury when a substitute pony can be played. Although there is no restriction to the height of the ponies used, it is generally accepted that the ideal height should not exceed 15.2 hands. A team consists of 6 players, divided into two sections of three, who play alternate chukkas of eight minutes each, of which six chukkas comprise a full match. The three players in each section consist of a NO 1 'attack', No 2 'centre and No 'defence player. The total aggregate of goals scored by the two sections in each team constitutes the nal score. FOULS A player carrying the ball in his stick must carry it on his stick side ie. right-handed players carry on the right side of the pony. A player can not carry it across his pony but he can pick up or catch the ball on the non-stick side, provided he brings the stick back to his side immediately. Left-handed players are permitted in polocrosse. Hitting at the opponent's stick, either to dislodge the ball or prevent possession of it, which is allowed in an upward direction only, constitutes s foul. 'Riding off' is allowed, by crossing, stopping over the ball or elbowing constitutes a foul. The wedging or sandwiching of a player between riding off' simultaneously also constitutes a foul. The penalty for such fouls is a free throw to the offended side. FIELD OF PLAY The eld is 146,5m long and 55m wide, with the goal posts 2,5m apart inside measurement and not more than 5m in height. Ineld, 27.5m from each end and there is a line extending the width of the eld, which is called the penalty line. This line encloses what is know as the goal scoring area, in which only the No 1 of the attacking team, and NO 3 of the defending team, is allowed to play. The ball must be bounced or passed over the penalty line when entering or exiting the goal scoring area. Directly in front of each goal, there is a 10m semi-circle and the ball must be thrown at the goal posts from outside the semi-circle and within the goal scoring area. The No 1 is the only player who can score a goal for the team and can only play in the centre area. No 3 is the only player who can defend a goal for the side.. THE FIELD The game is played on a eld that is 55m wide and 146,5m long. With 2,5m wide goal posted at each end. The eld is divided into three areas, two goal scoring areas which measure 27,5m from each goal line, and the mid eld area of 91,5m. In front of each set of goals a semi-circle is marked, this is known as the D'. The lines separating the goal scoring area from the mid-eld are called 'penalty lines'. THROW IN The game is commenced in the centre of the eld with the players lining up side by side, one behind the other with the No 1 (the attacker) in the front, No 2 (the centre) in the middle and No 3 (the defender) at the back. The ball is thrown in, well above the ponies' heads, by the umpire. The game recommences similarly after a goal has been scored. Whenever an attempt at the goal fails, the No 3 (the defender) throws the ball back into play from just behind the penalty line, at a point directly in front of the spot where the ball crossed the back line. The umpire will mark the spot.
