Welcome to Conversation 1 TEACHER Basic Infos ANDREW Talk2Connect 02 About Fluency This class is meant to help you practice and improve your fluency in English. 03 What is fluency, you ask? Fluency in a language means speaking easily, reasonably quickly and without having to stop and pause a lot. Becoming fluent in a language can take many years, but here are some tips to help you sound as natural as possible in speaking exams. Good speakers communicate and get their message across smoothly, even though they may make mistakes. Communication is the most important part of speaking, and it is important to communicate your ideas as naturally as possible. Here are some tips to help you speak more fluently. Use every opportunity in class to speak English. Speak to your classmates and your teacher in English. The more English you speak, the easier you will find speaking. Be very clear about the message you want to communicate. That is your goal. Don’t worry about making mistakes. The important thing is to communicate what you want to say. Practice, practice, practice! Use little expressions like ‘Er’ or ‘Erm’ to fill the gaps while you are thinking about what to say. 07 Agreements TO ENSURE A SAFE AND MOTIVATING ENVIRONMENT, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALL THE PARTICIPANTS IN THIS CLASS RESPECT THESE AGREEMENTS: - COME TO CLASS ON TIME. (YOUR CLASS STARTS AT 6:00 YOU SHOULD BE THERE NO LATER THAN 6:15). - AVOID ABSENCES. YOU CAN ONLY BE ABSENT 4 TIMES DURING THE CYCLE, BEYOND THAT NUMBER YOU AUTOMATICALLY FAIL THE COURSE. ONLY A DOCTOR’S NOTE CAN EXCUSE AN ABSENCE. - RESPECT YOUR PEERS (RESPECT MEANS TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION WHAT OTHER PEOPLE FEEL AND NOT TRY TO INTENTIONALLY HURT OR HARM THEM) - PARTICIPATE (BE ENTHUSIASTIC, BE POSITIVE (YOU CAN DO IT), SHARE YOUR OPINION) AND FINALLY DO THE TASK. REMEMBER, PARTICIPATION ACCOUNTS FOR 40% OF YOUR EVALUATION. - AVOID USING YOUR CELLPHONE (IN CONVERSATION CLASS, YOU WILL BE TALKING TO PEOPLE. IT’S DISRESPECTFUL NOT TO OFFER THEM YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION). - AVOID EATING IN THE CLASSROOM (IT’S ALSO DISRESPECTFUL TO SPEAK WHILE YOU’RE CHEWING GUM OR WITH YOUR MOUTH FULL). - PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING (ATTENTION = LOOKING AT THE SPEAKER WITHOUT SPEAKING) AND PRACTICE ACTIVE LISTENING. - TURN ON YOUR CAMERA (THIS IS CONVERSATION IT'S MEANT TO BE A SOCIAL EXPERIENCE TRY YOUR BEST TO HAVE YOUR CAMERA ON DURING CLASS.) - THERE'S A DRESS CODE. PLEASE DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR CLASS. (NO TANK TOPS, NO CAPS, NO SHADES, NO HAT OF ANY SORTS) - USE HEADPHONES TO AVOID CAUSING SOUND FEEDBACK. 05 Evaluations MID-TERM PRESENTATION: YOU WILL MAKE A 5-MINUTE PRESENTATION USING POWERPOINT. YOUR PRESENTATION SHOULD HAVE 95% IMAGES AND ONLY 5% TEXT (TITLE, BULLET POINTS, NAMES, ETC.) SPEAKING FOR LESS THAN 5 MINUTES WILL AFFECT YOUR GRADE NEGATIVELY. PRESENTATIONS THAT DO NOT RESPECT THESE GUIDELINES WILL BE PENALIZED. FINAL - 1-ON-1 INTERVIEW: YOU WILL HAVE A 1-ON-1 INTERVIEW WITH YOUR TEACHER WHERE YOU WILL BE GIVEN A TOPIC ON THE DAY OF THE EVALUATION, AND YOU WILL HAVE TO SPEAK FOR A MINIMUM* OF 2 MINUTES. THE TOPIC WILL BE GIVEN ON THE DAY OF THE INTERVIEW, NOT BEFORE! 05 Feedback You will receive feedback on your performance in the course on the day of your final evaluation. 02 I wish a wonderful experience 25
