Estimating the Cost (Luke 14:28) Asking yourself the following questions may help you estimate the cost of accepting a new responsibility or role: • Does this line up with my big-picture purpose? • Am I passionate about this? • How would accepting this commitment affect my capacity to serve and love those closest to me? • Am I qualified and capable of meeting this need? • Will I be operating within my strengths, or will this commitment be draining? • How much time (including preparation) will this require, and how long will the commitment last? • How will this impact my schedule in my current season? Do I have the time it would take to give this the attention it deserves? • What would I have to decline if I say yes to this opportunity? Is this an acceptable trade-off? • Am I motivated to answer a certain way out of fear, guilt, or obligation? • How would saying yes affect my family? How do they feel about it? • Do I have the financial resources to comfortably say yes? • Do I have the emotional energy required for this commitment? • What does my gut say? • What do I sense God telling me about this? *Excerpted from Free to Lean: Making Peace with Your Lopsided Life by Jocelyn Green
