POISON When a player is POISONED you place a counter in the centre of their mat to represent that they are POISONED, at any time, if they are no longer POISONED remove the counter. At the end of the player's turn, if they are still POISONED, they must flip 2 coins. If both are heads they are no longer POISONED. If not, the player takes 1 DAMAGE and remains POISONED. CURSE When you CURSE one of your opponents EQUIPPED cards, the card that was CURSED is DESTROYED. You can only CURSE a card on the turn it was EQUIPPED. STEAL When you STEAL one of your opponents EQUIPPED cards, you move the STOLEN card from your opponents mat onto your mat and into the coordinating slot. If there is already a card in that slot it is SALVAGED. When you STEAL a card, you also steal any DURABILITY counters on the card and any ATTACHED cards. CHARACTERS Each CHARACTER has a PRO (strength) and a CON (weakness) which can be found on the CHARACTER mat or the side of the deck box. These PROS and CONS may affect your deck, cards, INVENTORY and other core features of BACKLANDS TCG. This makes deck building more fun and challenging, as you can build a deck around your CHARACTER'S strong points and try to avoid their weaknesses. When building a custom deck you can have a maximum of 5 copies of each card. PRIMAL DECK Your PRIMAL DECK consists of 36 cards, you draw cards from here throughout the game until you run out of cards. The last person with remaining cards in their PRIMAL DECK is the winner. THE VOID THE VOID is the discard pile. Cards are placed face up in THE VOID when they are: -DESTROYED -SACRIFICED -DISCARDED SLOTS Cards are EQUIPPED into SLOTS. You can only have one card EQUIPPED per SLOT and the card type must match the SLOT name. SLOTS: ARMOUR, SPELL, WEAPON, CREATURE. DESTROYING When an EQUIPPED card is DESTROYED it goes into THE VOID. SACRIFICING SACRIFICING is where you place cards from the top of your PRIMAL DECK into THE VOID. DISCARDING DISCARDING is where you place cards from your INVENTORY into THE VOID. NAME The name of the card. TYPE There are 4 types of cards: - WEAPONS - CREATURES - ARMOUR - INSTANT SPELLS - ATTACH SPELLS - ACTIVE SPELLS WEAPONS Used to ATTACK opponents. CREATURES Used to ATTACK opponents and DEFEND DAMAGE from opponent’s ATTACKS. ARMOUR Used to DEFEND DAMAGE from opponent’s ATTACKS. INSTANT SPELLS Can be EQUIPPED at any time and are played straight into THE VOID. ATTACH SPELLS Played underneath any EQUIPPED card, ATTACHED SPELLS shares the card SLOT and if the card is DESTROYED, the ATTACHED SPELL is also DESTROYED. ACTIVE SPELLS Can be EQUIPPED into your SPELL SLOT, the ABILITY on the ACTIVE SPELL affects your CHARACTER and cards until the SPELL is DESTROYED - at the end of each turn place 1 DURABILITY counter on your ACTIVE SPELL, when the amount of DURABILITY counters equals or exceeds the DURABILITY stat on the card it is DESTROYED. PRIMAL COST Every card has a PRIMAL COST. When you EQUIP a card, SACRIFICE cards from the top of your PRIMAL DECK equal to the PRIMAL COST stat on the card you are EQUIPPING. DURABILITY Most cards have a DURABILITY stat (except INSTANT and ATTACH SPELLS). DURABILITY is a marker to track a card’s ATTACKS and DEFENCES. At any time, if the number of DURABILITY counters on a card is equal to or exceeds the DURABILITY stat, the card is DESTROYED. For example, if a WEAPON has 5 DURABILITY it can ATTACK 5 times. After each ATTACK a counter is placed on the card to represent the number of times it has been used. If a CREATURE has 5 DURABILITY, it can either ATTACK up to 5 times or DEFEND up to 5 DAMAGE (or a combination). DAMAGE Whenever you ATTACK an opponent they take DAMAGE equal to the DAMAGE stat on the ATTACKING card. ABILITY Most cards have an ABILITY which triggers certain effects at specific times. INSTANT SPELLS are an exception as their ABILITY is always activated when they are first EQUIPPED. YEAR The year in which the card was designed. RARITY There are 5 types of rarity which determine the value of the card. In value order from least rare to most rare these include: COMMON, UNCOMMON, RARE, LEGENDARY, MYTHICAL. SET+CARD NUMBER This tells you the set that the card comes from and the card’s number out of 100. INVENTORY This is your hand. You DISCARD cards from here and DRAW cards to here. DRAWING DRAWING is the action of putting cards from the top of your PRIMAL DECK into your INVENTORY. START PHASE DRAW a card (DRAWING is the action of putting cards from the top of your PRIMAL DECK into your INVENTORY). - Activate any ABILITIES that happen during the start of your turn. MAIN PHASE In your MAIN PHASE, you can EQUIP as many cards as you like. To EQUIP a card: - Pick a card from your INVENTORY that you want to EQUIP. - Place that card onto your CHARACTER mat into the SLOT that matches the card type. - SACRIFICE cards from the top of your PRIMAL DECK equal to the PRIMAL COST stat on the EQUIPPED card. - ACTIVATE any ABILITY that says "...when this card is EQUIPPED..." If you want to EQUIP a card into a SLOT that already has a card, you can DESTROY the EQUIPPED card and then EQUIP the new card. This is called SALVAGING. ATTACK PHASE There is no ATTACK PHASE on each player’s first turn. After you end your MAIN PHASE, you may ATTACK once with a WEAPON and once with a CREATURE (if you have any EQUIPPED): - Select a player that you want to ATTACK. This is your TARGET. Each card can only TARGET one player. If you have multiple cards that are ATTACKING, they can each TARGET a different player. - Place one DURABILITY counter on the card that is ATTACKING. If the number of DURABILITY counters on a card equals or exceeds the DURABILITY stat on the card, it is DESTROYED immediately. - The TARGET of your ATTACK takes DAMAGE equal to the DAMAGE stat on the ATTACKING card. END PHASE - Activate any ABILITIES that say "...at the end of players turn..." - Place one DURABILITY counter on any EQUIPPED ACTIVE SPELLS. - Your turn ends and play continues clockwise. DEFENDING When you take DAMAGE, you can DEFEND against the ATTACK with any EQUIPPED ARMOUR or CREATURE cards. If you don't have any cards EQUIPPED or choose not to DEFEND against the ATTACK, you must SACRIFICE cards from the top of your PRIMAL DECK equal to the DAMAGE stat on the ATTACKING card. If you choose to DEFEND with EQUIPPED cards: - DURABILITY counters equal to the DAMAGE stat on the ATTACKING card should be placed on or divided between ARMOUR and/or CREATURE cards. - When the DURABILITY counters on a card equal or exceed the DURABILITY stat of that card, it is DESTROYED. - If an ARMOUR or CREATURE card is DESTROYED by DAMAGE and the DAMAGE is greater than the remaining DURABILITY on the DEFENDING card, the excess DAMAGE is carried over to any other EQUIPPED ARMOUR or CREATURE cards. - However, if there are no other EQUIPPED cards (or the player chooses not to DEFEND with them) then cards from the top of their PRIMAL DECK equal to the excess DAMAGE are SACRIFICED. The excess DAMAGE is called BLEED DAMAGE. ATTACKING When you attack with one with a WEAPON or CREATURE follow the instructions below: - Select a player that you want to ATTACK. SALVAGING If you want to EQUIP a card into a SLOT that already has a card, you can DESTROY the EQUIPPED card and then EQUIP the new card. This is called SALVAGING. BLEED DAMAGE BLEED DAMAGE is the excess DAMAGE from an ATTACK that was DEFENDED by one of your ARMOUR or CREATURE cards but the ARMOUR or CREATURE card was destroyed. TARGET When you attack - select a player that you want to ATTACK. This is your TARGET. Each card can only TARGET one player. If you have multiple cards that are ATTACKING, they can each TARGET a different player. PROS AND CONS Each CHARACTER has a PRO (strength) and a CON (weakness) which can be found on the CHARACTER mat or the side of the deck box. These PROS and CONS may affect your deck, cards, INVENTORY and other core features of BACKLANDS TCG. EQUIPPING To EQUIP a card: - Pick a card from your INVENTORY that you want to EQUIP.
