Knitting Pattern – Pyramids Use these pyramids as toy scenery, or knit them as coloured blocks for toddlers to play with. Size: The larger pyramid is 8cm [3in] tall and the smaller one is 5cm [2in] tall. You will need: • Beige wool. I used Double Knit [8-6 ply, “light worsted”.] Tension square: 10cm x 10cm square is 24 stitches across and 32 rows. Making both pyramids used just over 50g. • Knitting needles – I used UK size 11 [3.0mm, US size 2.5] • Blunt sewing needle with an eye big enough to thread your wool through • Stuffing • Optional: scrap pieces of cardboard Stitches used: k2tog – knit two stitches together p2tog – purl two stitches together Tips Don’t worry too much about counting large numbers in this pattern. You only need to count carefully for the first few rows. After that you’ll notice the corners of the pyramid emerging (as pictured on the right.) Soon you’ll be able to identify the decrease-points by sight. You’ll be able to spot the stitch where the decrease was made on the previous row. On your current row, you will need to knit/purl together that stitch and the one after it. On the knit side, you will be able to see it On the purl side, you may have to peer over to the approaching: back but you can still spot it: This will help you to look away from the pattern and avoid counting large numbers of stitches. © Snoo’s Knits 2019. Pick how many stitches wide you want each side to be at the base – this needs to be an odd number. For comparison, our large pyramid is 31 stitches wide and our small pyramid is 21 stitches wide. Put your chosen number of stitches in the Start box, then follow the arrows to fill in the boxes around it. Start Number of stitches wide: … … Take ……… ……… ……… Multiply Add 1 ………… … away 2 by 4 Take Take away 1 away 1 00 ……… ……… ……… ……… Divide Take by 2 away 1 Now transfer the numbers in the shapes to the boxes below. The thin arrows will tell you how to continue the pattern. On each row (apart from row 1) your number of stitches will go down by four. Continue in the same pattern until you reach 9 stitches, then finish with: k1, k2tog 4 times [5], cut the yarn and thread through the last 5 stitches. Cast on stitches. 1: knit 2: p , (p2tog, p … ) 3 times, p2tog, p … 3: k , (k2tog, k ) 3 times, k2tog, k -1 each -2 each -1 each … time time time -1 each -2 each -1 each time time time 4: p , (p2tog, p ) 3 times, p2tog, p 5: k , (k2tog, k ) 3 times, k2tog, k 6: p , (p2tog, p ) 3 times, p2tog, p 7: k , (k2tog, k ) 3 times, k2tog, k For the base, cast on the number of stitches you wrote in the “Start” box. To find out how many rows you will need, take the number in the Start box again, divide it by 3 and then multiply it by 4. You may need a calculator. Whatever answer you get, round it to the nearest whole number. This is the number of stocking-stitch rows you need to work before casting off. © Snoo’s Knits 2019. All rights reserved. There is an extra stitch which will disappear as you sew, making this side of the pyramid the same size as the others. Pin the base of the pyramid to the corners of the top piece. Stitch round three edges of the base, joining them to the top. If you want the sides of your pyramid to be well-defined, cut out squares and triangles of cardboard and insert them through the hole in the back. Round off the corners of your cardboard pieces so that they don’t poke through the knitting. To make a squidgy pyramid, leave the cardboard out. When you’re happy with the shape, sew up the hole to complete your pyramid. Finished… What next?
