Media sources like to discusses how young people work, specifically focusing on the rise of the gig economy, remote work, and “quiet quitting.” However, there is little discussion about the careers young people actually want to pursue. The state of play: The job market in the US remains tight at the start of 2023. With young employees potentially having more autonomy with job placement choices, aspects like company mission and ethics are thought to play a big role in the ultimate decision. But when young people think about their overall careers, and not just their next immediate job, what priorities are top of mind? So: Generation Lab and Axios asked hundreds of young people around the country to describe their career aspirations and priorities Based on a survey of 824 young people, 18-29 years old, conducted on January 11-18, 2023. INTRODUCTION I Introduction II Key Insights III Findings IV About us prepared for 3 Overall KEY INSIGHTS 4 ❖ Dependable jobs with high earning potential (doctor, engineer) are career goals for many, but careers with high levels of personal autonomy (business person, artist) also rank highly ❖ Many parents are happy with any career their child pursues, but many still want doctors and lawyers Business comes in all sizes Social impact less important than we thought? ❖ Becoming a business person is a top career choice for youth (14%) ❖ Small, medium, and large businesses were roughly equally desired places to work (28%, 27%, and 31% respectively) ❖ Nearly half of youth prioritize personal fulfillment and happiness, while only 8% prioritize societal impact ❖ Just 14% of young people want to spend most of their career in government and non-profit sector Q: “My career goal is to be a...” 1.
