Insider: Money mindsets for businesses that last T R A N S C R I PT You know, it is amazing how the money mindsets we grow up with are so invisible, they chirp in the back of our heads and they can cause us to behave in peculiar ways 20 or 30 or 40 years later. And I was thinking about this this morning, because here I am on a beach in L.A. I’m here at a CEO retreat. And years ago, I was at a similar beach in Thailand. And I was there with a friend. We were staying at a pretty nice place. And my friend was visibly uncomfortable at this hotel. And it wasn’t about the money. I asked them why. And they finally said, “I don’t want to be the kind of person who has to stay at a place like this.” Now they could afford it. But what were they really saying? Number one, they were saying, “If I stay at a place like this, now I can’t go back to where I used to stay.” In other words, “If I eat at a nice restaurant, I can’t go back to eating at McDonald’s.” “If I get a massage, I can’t stop. I have to do that for the rest of my life.” And I think differently. I think I’m in control of how I spend my money. And in fact, I spent a lot of time thinking about money psychology. And it’s really important as you grow your business. So I want to give you three money, mindsets. Money mindset number one that’s going to help you grow your business: I am paid for the value I create. This is totally different from how we’re raised. Most of us are paid for clocking in at 9 am, clocking out at 5 pm. Some of us are paid for the number of units, number of dishes we wash or number of vases that we create if we’re an artist. But in your business, it’s totally different. You might spend one hour helping someone negotiate a $25,000 raise, and they are happy to pay you $2,000. So you’re not paid for the time you put in, you’re paid for the value you create — money mindset number one. Money mindset number two is: The more I make, the more value I can create. Now I want you to think about this. When you think about someone who accumulates money, who makes a lot of money, what do you think about? What comes to mind? For a lot of people, that money mindset, that money script they grew up with, involves some rich person trampling on other people to make that money and then hoarding all that wealth, just swimming in it like Scrooge McDuck. Again, I don’t believe this. The more I make, the more value I can create by hiring amazing de- signers, amazing product developers, amazing customer service people, amazing marketers to spread the word about what I do. So the more I make, the more value I can create. That’s money mindset number two. And money mindset number three: Money is a marker that I’m doing the right thing. Anybody can get someone to follow you on Instagram or Twitter, YouTube or whatever. But you gotta be really good for someone to pull out their credit card and pay you. Nobody trips and falls and spends $200 or $500 or $2,000. You gotta be good. So that’s money mindset number three: Money is a marker you are doing the right thing. Internalize these money mindsets. Start thinking about what money mindsets you grew up with. These are going to help you grow your business as you think about them and use them every day.
