Our feats in football to date are reflected below but we are striving for greater achievements. Today, Singapore needs a football philosophy, a style of play that the players can buy into and the fans want to see. A football style that is representative of the Singaporean culture – Fearless, Resilient, Exciting, Proactive, Creative and Organised An “Identity” that can resonate through the Singapore footballing landscape. “We want to give Singaporeans, a team that they are proud to call their own, a style of play that excites and that we can all embrace.” AFF Championship Champions 1998 | 2004/5 | 2007 | 2012 AFC Asian Cup Group Stage Appearance 1984 1 4 To be a dominant force we must implement a style of play which is attractive and effective, by controlling the balance of the game and the eventual outcome. Modern global trends strongly suggest, a possession based, high tempo game with a pro - active mindset both in attack and defence, is currently proving to be the most successful style of play when implemented correctly. The correct execution of the playing style will be evidenced by statistical data. Once we improve key statistical indicators in ball possession, we can look deeper into the analysis to see how much more of a dominant game we are able to play. However, this style is also much harder to apply with success. It requires players to be physically well conditioned, good decision - makers, technically gifted and importantly, mentally strong. We need our players to play with confidence and have no fear of making mistakes. To begin this revolution, there must be a change of mindset of the coaches and players, who together build the football future in the Singapore way! WHY THIS PHILOSOPHY FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY “The overarching principle is - if we have the ball, the opposition can’t score and if we do lose possession, we need to win it back as soon as we can.” Keeping the ball and being effective with our possession, increase our chances of success. FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY PLAYING STYLE STATEMENT Our football philosophy demands a pro - active, possession based, high tempo style of play. As a result, we control the balance of the match , with quick ball movement and efficient player movement to create space and incisive passing to create goalscoring opportunities. This is underpinned by superior decision making across all facets of the game. Out of possession, we maintain a pro - active mindset, with the purpose of winning the ball back as soon as we can and as close as possible, to the opposition goal. “The most crucial factor for Singapore football, is that this model is a more complete development tool that yields far greater learnings for our young footballers. BEHIND THE PHILOSOPHY PERFORMANCE BY THE NUMBERS On average, 58% of passes attempted are made in the defending half in the Top 5 European Leagues. Dominant Performances Possession > 65% Passes in a Match 550+ Passing Accuracy > 85% Dominant Performances PASSES ATTEMPTED BY CLUBS (TOP 5 EUROPEAN LEAGUES IN 2019) GLOBAL TRENDS IN FOOTBALL Future proof, must be able to stand the test of time. Studies in top 5 league and our region. In recent years, Singapore has always played a more defensive minded brand of football. When making a comparison in key statistics of Singapore’s football performance at recent international competitions, it suggests that Singapore is currently playing a style with a very defensive minded focus, with the main objectives of not losing rather than attempting to win. To win a game under these circumstances we are relying on too many unknowns, which takes the result of the game out of our hands. Such as, how the opposition performs and executes on any given day and we therefore rely on their performance to be able to get a desired result.. We need to be in control of the game and play it under our terms. “Global trends suggest this current style will not bring the necessary success we desire” WHY THIS PHILOSOPHY FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY 2019 Key Statistics of Ball Possession (Average) Possession Passes in a Match Passing Accuracy Dominant Performance > 65% 550+ > 85% Women ‘A’ National Team 34% ( - 31%) 305 ( - 195) 61% ( - 24%) SIN U15 Boys 39% ( - 26%) 260 ( - 240) 67% ( - 18%) SIN U18 Boys 47% ( - 18%) 351 ( - 149) 74% ( - 11%) SIN U22 Boys 41% ( - 24%) 301 ( - 199) 70% ( - 15%) * The table represents a picture of our current style of play based on 2019 results ** Differential figures in red KEY FOOTBALL METRICS COMPARISONS CASE STUDY: SEA GAMES 41% 45% 54% 301 383 500 70% 77% 82% Modern global trends strongly suggest that the most effective and successful style of play, at the moment, is more of the possession based, high tempo game with a pro - active mindset Currently, the key statistics for the performance of the Singapore U22 Men’s National Team in the 2019 SEA Games show: Possession per match (%) Total Passes per match Passing Accuracy per match (%) NON - QUALIFIED (2015 - 2019) QUALIFIED (2015 - 2019) SINGAPORE 2019 NON - QUALIFIED (2015 - 2019) Possession Passes in a Match Passing Accuracy Dominant Performance > 65% 550+ > 85% BEHIND THE PHILOSOPHY FOUR MAIN MOMENTS FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY - Attacking Organisation In general, there are four (4) moments of the game that needs to and should be addressed. These 4 moments make up the key com pon ents of the match where the style and philosophy is worked around and perfected. Therefore, they are heavily intertwined and are work ed together within our philosophy and coaching methodology. Attacking Organisation IN POSSESSION BALANCED Our Attacking Organisation , by way of building up from the back and playing through the opposition lines in a structured manner, has us always looking to play forward and be able to penetrate the opposition’s defensive structure. Key principles in this phase is - controlled and effective possession, individual skill and combination plan to create attacking moments. FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY - Attacking Transition Attacking Organisation Attacking Transition IN POSSESSION UNBALANCED BALANCED In attacking transition moments, we look to take advantage of the opposition’s lack of defensive organisation by playing forward when possible and supporting that with quick decisive forward runs, to create goal scoring opportunities. Key principles in this phase is - quick forward passing, quickly into attacking and threatening positions and penetrating passes and forward runs to create goalscoring opportunities FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY - Defensive Organisation Attacking Organisation Defending Organisation Attacking Transition IN POSSESSION NO POSSESSION UNBALANCED BALANCED Defensive organisation requires in our style of play, to quickly get into our defensive structure and collectively look to wi n t he ball back as soon as possible. Once organised, we look to press the opposition in a methodical way, with all lines of formati on playing a role in remaining compact and moving as one. Key principles in this phase is - Win the ball back as close as possible to opponents goal in an organised manner, deny opponent time and space by remaining compact and maintaining pressure on the ball carrier FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY - Defensive Transition Attacking Organisation Defending Transition Defending Organisation Attacking Transition IN POSSESSION NO POSSESSION UNBALANCED BALANCED In Defensive transition we talk of “Front foot defending,” to be positive in our mindset in winning back the ball. We require im mediate pressure on the ball to serve 2 main purposes, that being, to win the ball back straight away and if not, to force the opposition back war ds so we don’t concede a counter attack. Key principles in this phase is - Instant pressure on the ball, prevent opponent playing forward and quick transition into defensive positions.
