THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL CURRICULUM (NFC) TO GUIDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR ATHLETES & COACHES National Football Curriculum Playing Philosophy Coaching Philosophy Style Rules Learning Creating a Character & 4 Core Playing Coaching & Tactical Methodology over Learning Leadership Skills Formats Environment Development Rules Winning WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY BUILDING THE ELITE FOOTBALLER FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY OUR HISTORY, OUR CULTURE Singapore as a country, has always been able to show they can rise against the odds and achieve major feats. Our feats in football to date are reflected below but we are striving for greater achievements. 4 AFF Championship 1 AFC Asian Cup Champions Group Stage Appearance 1998 | 2004/5 | 2007 | 2012 1984 Today, Singapore needs a football philosophy, a style of play that the players can buy into and the fans want to see. A football style that is representative of the Singaporean culture – Fearless, Resilient, Exciting, Proactive, Creative and Organised. An “Identity” that can resonate through the Singapore footballing landscape. “We want to give Singaporeans, a team that they are proud to call their own, a style of play that excites and that we can all embrace.” FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY WHY THIS PHILOSOPHY To be a dominant force we must implement a style of play which is attractive and effective, by controlling the balance of the game and the eventual outcome. Modern global trends strongly suggest, a possession based, high tempo game with a pro-active mindset both in attack and defence, is currently proving to be the most successful style of play when implemented correctly. “The overarching principle is - if we have the ball, the opposition can’t score and if we do lose possession, we need to win it back as soon as we can.” Keeping the ball and being effective with our possession, increase our chances of success. The correct execution of the playing style will be evidenced by statistical data. Once we improve key statistical indicators in ball possession, we can look deeper into the analysis to see how much more of a dominant game we are able to play. However, this style is also much harder to apply with success. It requires players to be physically well conditioned, good decision-makers, technically gifted and importantly, mentally strong. We need our players to play with confidence and have no fear of making mistakes. To begin this revolution, there must be a change of mindset of the coaches and players, who together build the football future in the Singapore way! FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY PLAYING STYLE STATEMENT Our football philosophy demands a pro-active, possession based, high tempo style of play. As a result, we control the balance of the match, with quick ball movement and efficient player movement to create space and incisive passing to create goalscoring opportunities. This is underpinned by superior decision making across all facets of the game. Out of possession, we maintain a pro-active mindset, with the purpose of winning the ball back as soon as we can and as close as possible, to the opposition goal. “The most crucial factor for Singapore football, is that this model is a more complete development tool that yields far greater learnings for our young footballers. BEHIND THE PHILOSOPHY PERFORMANCE BY THE NUMBERS GLOBAL TRENDS IN FOOTBALL PASSES ATTEMPTED BY CLUBS (TOP 5 EUROPEAN LEAGUES IN 2019) On average, 58% of passes attempted are made in the defending half in the Top 5 European Leagues. FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY WHY THIS PHILOSOPHY 2019 Key Statistics of Ball Possession (Average) In recent years, Singapore has always played a more defensive minded brand of football. When making a comparison in key statistics of Singapore’s Possession Passes in a Passing football performance at recent international competitions, it suggests that Match Accuracy Singapore is currently playing a style with a very defensive minded focus, with the main objectives of not losing rather than attempting to win. Dominant > 65% 550+ > 85% To win a game under these circumstances we are relying on too many Performance unknowns, which takes the result of the game out of our hands. These 4 moments make up the key components of the match where the style and philosophy is worked around and perfected. Therefore, they are heavily intertwined and are worked together within our philosophy and coaching methodology. IN POSSESSION Attacking Organisation BALANCED Our Attacking Organisation, by way of building up from the back and playing through the opposition lines in a structured manner, has us always looking to play forward and be able to penetrate the opposition’s defensive structure. Key principles in this phase is - controlled and effective possession, individual skill and combination plan to create attacking moments. FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY - Attacking Transition In attacking transition moments, we look to take advantage of the opposition’s lack of defensive organisation by playing forward when possible and supporting that with quick decisive forward runs, to create goal scoring opportunities. IN POSSESSION Attacking Organisation Attacking Transition BALANCED UNBALANCED Key principles in this phase is - quick forward passing, quickly into attacking and threatening positions and penetrating passes and forward runs to create goalscoring opportunities FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY - Defensive Organisation Defensive organisation requires in our style of play, to quickly get into our defensive structure and collectively look to win the ball back as soon as possible. Once organised, we look to press the opposition in a methodical way, with all lines of formation playing a role in remaining compact and moving as one. IN POSSESSION Attacking Organisation Attacking Transition BALANCED UNBALANCED Defending Organisation NO POSSESSION Key principles in this phase is - Win the ball back as close as possible to opponents goal in an organised manner, deny opponent time and space by remaining compact and maintaining pressure on the ball carrier FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY - Defensive Transition In Defensive transition we talk of “Front foot defending,” to be positive in our mindset in winning back the ball. We require immediate pressure on the ball to serve 2 main purposes, that being, to win the ball back straight away and if not, to force the opposition backwards so we don’t concede a counter attack. IN POSSESSION Attacking Organisation Attacking Transition BALANCED UNBALANCED Defending Transition Defending Organisation NO POSSESSION Key principles in this phase is - Instant pressure on the ball, prevent opponent playing forward and quick transition into defensive positions. CHANGE FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY - Characteristics It is important that the four (4) moments of the game need to be and should be addressed. These 4 moments of the game make up the key elements of the match where the style and philosophy is worked around and perfected. The details of each moment are highlighted below. IN POSSESSION Attacking Organisation Attacking Transition ▪ Dominate the game through possession (overloads) ▪ Expose unbalanced opposition ▪ Controlled and effective possession ▪ Quick forward passing and movement ▪ Create and attack spaces (+defensive balance) ▪ Quickly create chances ▪ Combination play ▪ Score goals ▪ Score (lots) of goals Attacking Phase BALANCED UNBALANCED Defending Phase Defending Transition Defending Organisation ▪ Quickly regain possession ▪ Win the ball back as close to opponents goal ▪ Quick reorganisation ▪ Reduced time without the ball ▪ Press ball immediately to avoid forward pass ▪ Zonal pressing (overloads) ▪ Avoid opposition chances/goals ▪ Reduce and protect spaces (+attacking balance) ▪ Avoid creation of chances against ▪ Avoid goals against (clean sheets) NO POSSESSION FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY MOMENTS OF PLAY Set pieces are a key organisational element of the game and can be the difference between winning and losing for a well organised team. Identifying areas of weakness in our current model that prevent us from reaching our goals, is the first step towards building a better eco- system. We have identified areas in our system that we need to improve upon, however, our philosophy will only come to life if we Pool of Players Elite Coach & enhance two (2) important elements: & Education Coach Education 1. Develop an Elite Footballer 2. Educate and develop a Better and Braver Coach Holistic High Performance Development Standards of Standards of Players Competitions “Better coaches equals better players” To successfully build the Elite footballer and have the impact from our Braver coach, we have to understand and enhance the key areas identified in our model, to provide greater success. Overseas Exposure Trainings, Attachments, Competitions PHILOSOPHY TO IMPLEMENTATION LEARNING FORMATION FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY STYLE OF PLAY IN POSSESSION Our footballing philosophy revolves around ball possession. If we have the ball, the destiny of the game is in our hands. In possession, Singapore will adapt a pro-active, high tempo, possession based game to better control the balance of the match with: Quick and precise ball movement Quick player movement to create space and/or goal scoring opportunities Smart and quick decision-making, identifying when and how to penetrate opposition’s defensive structure during both the build- up and ball retention phase. “If we have the ball, the destiny of the game is in our hands.” Singapore Opposition FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY STYLE OF PLAY OUT OF POSSESSION Out of possession, we maintain a high-pressing and pro-active mindset, with the purpose of winning the ball back as soon as we can and as close as possible, to the opposition goal. In this style of play, we need a pro-active defensive structure which demands the ability to press high up the pitch and a mindset that hunts the ball to win it back as a first option. if not, we organise ourselves in the 2nd phase of our defensive organisation. Again the key is to win back possession of the ball as soon as we can, in an organised and effective manner. The 1-4-3-3 formation gives an even spread of players in all lines to support a high press and all transition moments. “An instinctive mindset that hunts the ball to win it back as as soon as possible, and if not, to organise ourselves in the 2nd phase of defensive organisation.” Singapore Opposition FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY FORMATION FOR LEARNING The Big Game 1–4–3–3 The formation we use in our development model will be the 1–4–3–3 system, as this formation best suits the learning for our philosophy. We will use this formation and integrate it into our Coach Education System as a basis for learning for all our youth National teams until we reach the Performance Phase. Through this, we will be able to implement and educate a singular, consistent formation throughout the development stages, improving and deepening the understanding for the roles and responsibilities in every position within this system. The 4 – 3 – 3 system is the most suitable formation in playing a pro-active style both in possession (attack) and out of possession (defend). It focuses on: Effective positional play Combination play / short passing game Creative and varied attacking play using the full width of the field Early disruption and pressuring when possession is lost This is not a fixed process however, and part of the development of the player is to be exposed to different formations and tactics, as he/she nears the Performance Phase, but the principles and style of play will always remain. FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY FORMATION FOR LEARNING - SINGLE DIAMOND Small Sided Games 5v5 Through the different stages of development the player has an easier understanding as they go through their journey of positional play with the correct skill fundamentals being taught to compliment the young footballer. The hidden learnings for the player through this journey grows in each stage of development. After we progress from the Discovery phase where we introduce a lot of 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 games, we then progress into a more structured small sided game format of 5v5. In this format we introduce the Single Diamond where the player applies the principles of play, such as the width and the depth of the formation. This also encourages plenty of 1v1 duels which is crucial to the individual development of the player. FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY FORMATION FOR LEARNING - DOUBLE DIAMOND Medium Games 8v8 From the Single diamond, our young players are now introduced to the Double Diamond, 8v8 format. This helps the learning process of the individual player through the next stage of development. In the Double Diamond we use the 1–3–1–3 system, this allows the familiarity of the positions to be learnt intricately and more thoroughly. Players are rotated through the various positions to enhance their learnings, to allow holistic development. This format is implemented into our Primary Schools competitions from the ages of 10 to 12 and prepare the player for our 11v11 competition in Secondary schools. FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY FORMATS OF PLAY The formation used in our development model will be the 1–4–3–3 system, in alignment with our footballing philosophy. We will use this formation and integrate it into our Coach Education System as a basis for learning for all our youth National teams until we reach the Performance Phase. This is considered the “Golden age of learning,” a phase in which we have not focused enough in the past and has been reflected in the development of our players. With our model so heavily dependent on a competent technical footballer, we place a huge emphasis on our coaching process of the four (4) Core Skills, in which will form the foundation of our technical base. With sessions emphasised in and around the 4 core skills, this will act as the foundation of the player that will, in time, allow him/her to successfully execute our playing philosophy. FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT The Youth Development phase is a continued process of progression for our player. From the Foundation phase where we focused on the development of the 4 Core Skills, we now look at perfecting those skills further within this stage. In this phase we further develop the players tactical understanding and how they can best apply or use their skills within the 4 moments of the game, underpinned by better decision making. We also focus further on the footballers physical attributes as they come out of the growth spurt stage of their life and we can push towards a better co-ordinated and more robust athlete. The physical components of our Singapore footballer is now even more of a focus, as it is an identified area of improvement, which will be addressed in all aspects of development. This is a gradual challenge physically, to all our players in this stage, as we adapt to playing in an 11 v 11 competition for the 1st time. me Youth Development Phase om inat e the ga U/13 – U/16 D ▪ Continue to grow ▪ Improve their Game PL ▪ Develop Understanding AY TO PR OG All our coaching in this stage is designed to deal with: RE SS ✓ The individual player’s role in our 1–4–3–3 model ✓ The Team objectives in our Tactical implementation ✓ Incorporating superior decision-making in game situations ✓ Gradually increasing physical/mental capabilities FAS FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT In the previous stages of a player’s development, the player was taught in a competitive, challenging structure, creating the tools needed to play our footballing style.
