Today is our final game of a long season, so we want to finish the season on a high and to put on a show. If we can get three more points, that would lift us to eighth in the table and it was always our aim to finish as high as possible in the league. Our overall points tally has already exceeded last season and we achieved the objective of steering well clear of relegation, and to get it done as early as we did is a credit to that group of players. The season has been a real positive and a step in the right direction. We have young players coming through the system, the pathway works at Argyle and we have shown that over the past three seasons. On the whole, we’ve played some good football and, as the season progressed, we’ve played more attacking football. It was a tough start, mainly because the team was getting used to each other, but we are now going into games with more confidence. We have a big summer ahead and the women’s team will be just the same as the men. We will look at areas for improvement, conversations with players to keep them at the club and identify the positions to strengthen. We will come under the club umbrella this summer and leaning on that amazing expertise already available at Home Park can only help us for the future. Ryan THE SEASON HAS BEEN A REAL POSITIVE AND A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION MK DONS SUFFER CUP FINAL HEARTBREAK MK Dons women cruelly lost on penalties in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup Final after Tricia Gould's screamer was cancelled out by Tia Johnson with five minutes left to play. The Dons were the better team for much of the match and will be disappointed not to be bringing the cup back to Milton Keynes. The Dons won a corner early on thanks to some great attacking intent from Lucy Wood, but Milly Hayes’ ball into the box was well cleared. Hayes was involved again moments later after picking up the ball from a Reading corner, the midfielder flew up the pitch for the Dons, but couldn’t combine with Emily Wilson to fashion a clear shot at goal. Rhianne Rush then put a lovely cross into the box for Lucy Wood to attack, but the forward couldn’t quite get under the ball and sent her header over the bar. Emily Wilson showed some fantastic intent to run at the Reading defence towards the end of the half, her hard work led to a shooting opportunity for Rhianne Rush, who curled one over the bar from the edge of the area. The Dons ended the half the stronger of the two teams, Milly Hayes fired off a brilliant shot from the edge of the area to keep Eve Annets on her toes, but the Reading keeper was able to palm the ball away. MK Dons had the opening chance of the second half after Reading failed to deal with a corner, Tricia Gould found herself with time in the box to get a header away, but couldn’t generate enough power to get the black past Eve Annets. Emily Wilson thought she’d opened the score after 53 minutes, the Dons’ number 30 did brilliantly well to squeeze a shot past Annets from close range but watched on as it agonisingly clipped the post. Reading had the best chance of the game with 25 minutes left to play, Rebecca Tinnelly sent a lopping header goalwards but Chloe Sansom was able to watch it float just wide. Moments later MK Dons took the lead! Tricia Gould found herself with time on the edge of the box after a period of good pressure for the Dons. She took a touch out of her feet before curling a sumptuous effort into the top right-hand corner. 1-0. With five minutes left to play Reading equalised, Tia Johnson was quickest to react to a loose ball in the MK Dons area and turned home from close range. 1-1. Deep into stoppage time, Rhianne Rush thought she’d won it for the Dons, a ball bounced up to the midfielder in the Reading area and she lashed it towards goal only for it to skew marginally wide. After five minutes of stoppage time referee Gifford Manyange blew his whistle and the game went to penalties. The shootout win saw Reading claim the Berks and Bucks Women's Senior Cup. The hosts were the first to find the net through striker Maddie Biggs' volleyed effort inside the 18-yard box before the break. Although incredibly fatigued from their previous match that occurred two days earlier, the Greens battled hard and found their equaliser through Katie Dickson’s penalty in the 76th minute. The match began with Billericay, who had early chances in the Argyle area, but failed to find a way past the wall of Argyle shirts that threw themselves in front of every ball struck goalwards. Argyle gradually began to cause concern for the home side down the right wing with crosses into the area from Katie Dickson and runs from Fern Orchard but were kept at bay. The visitors continued to fashion out chances as the half went on, with forward Charlotte Whitmore being the first to force Blues keeper Alex Baker into a save from a curling effort. As the half came to its end, Billericay fought for a few extra chances on goal and in the first minute of injury time broke the deadlock, Biggs seizing an opportunity to strike the ball into the top right corner on the bounce, securing her team the upper hand going into the second period. Argyle manager Ryan Perks made his only available change as the game restarted, switching Georgie Knott for Taya Pomfret as the Greens searched for a way back into the match. Whitmore continued to cause concern for the Billericay backline and, in the 50th minute, almost diverted a clearance from Baker into the back of her net, but the ball bounced past the far post. The Greens worked hard and continued to charge forward at every available opportunity. Midfielder Imy Crawford and Whitmore both created great chances, the former’s well-weighted ball into the area was snuffed out by Baker's run off her line before Whitmore’s low-driven cross to Dickson proved too powerful for the versatile midfielder to divert goalwards. With usual penalty taker Ellie Sara unavailable, it was Dickson who stepped up to the spot and blasted the ball past the dive of Baker into the bottom left corner. Frustrated by the loss of their lead, Billericay began to make inroads in the Argyle third. Forward Biggs searched for her second of the match and came close on two occasions, but it was the palms and clever decision-making of Lily Felgate that stopped the striker from adding to her tally. Argyle had one final opportunity to snatch the win from the home side through a corner in injury time. Dickson’s delivery flew towards the near post and found the foot of O’Shea, who struck the ball first time towards the net, but Baker palmed the shot off the line. The Pilgrims’ valiant efforts mean they remain eighth in the league with one final match to play on Sunday, 5 May, when they take on MK Dons in the finale of the FAWNL Southern Premier Division season. Jemma steps away from football following an exceptional career that began with Argyle in the 2007/08 season, where she featured on 16 occasions, scoring once under the side managed by her father, Kevin. Following spells with Bristol City’s Academy and Birmingham City she made the move to Arsenal, where she continued to flourish, and helped the Gunners lift the Women’s FA Cup in the 2015/16 season. Prior to her departure from the Gunners, and subsequent sabbatical from football, Rose represented England in their Euro 2017 Qualifying campaign, where she came on as a late substitute in a 1-0 victory against Bosnia & Herzegovina. After three years of life away from football, Rose would return to Argyle once more under the management of Ryan Perks, in 2021, racking up 50 further appearances and scoring on 11 occasions. Making her announcement on Argyle TV, Jemma said: “I made the decision earlier this year that this season will be my last for Argyle, and in football, so that I can focus on family and my own life as well. “This wasn’t an easy decision for me, as football has been a huge part of my life for so long. From playing for Argyle when I was 16 years old to then moving away from home to pursue my dream of becoming a professional footballer, it’s been an incredible journey. To end it in an Argyle shirt will be an emotional one this Sunday. “Although it will be sad to see an end to my time on the pitch, I’ll now have the time to put my full focus on my family. Later this year, my partner and I will both become mums, which is something amazing to look forward to. “Hopefully, I’ll also look to get into coaching, as well as continue to focus on my job, but my priority will be being the best mum I can be whilst making new memories with my loved ones.” Manager Ryan Perks added his best wishes to Jemma for the next chapter in her story. “It's been fantastic to work with Jemma over the last three seasons,” he said. “She's a tremendous person and player. She's had a great football career and hopefully many more years to come, just on the other side of the touchline.” Thank you, Jemma.
