PRESS RELEASE GERMAINE KRUIP AT THE FRIEZE ART FAIR THE WAVERING SKIES FRIEZE ART FAIR PROJECTS 21 – 24 OCTOBER 2004, Regent’s Park London Germaine Kruip is producing a monumental, site-specific light work entitled The Wavering Skies for the third edition of the Frieze Art Fair (FAF) in London, from 21 to 24 October 2005. This presentation is the result of an invitation to Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam to contribute to Frieze Art Fair Projects, the fair’s non-commercial programme. As well as SMBA and IASPIS (Stockholm), various individual artists have also been invited to contribute to the ‘Projects’ series, including Martha Rosler, Andrea Zittel, Matthieu Laurette and Henrik Hakansson. The Wavering Skies has been specially conceived by Kruip for the 80-metre- long entrance corridor of the Frieze Art Fair. No one attending the Frieze Art Fair will miss the work since every visitor to the fair passes through this corridor. At programmed times and according to alternating patterns, Kruip causes a shadow to move along the lighted corridor. It creates an ambiguous atmosphere that is in a way an allusion to the current mood in the British capital. Kruip comments: ‘It’s about a sense of time and the possibility of evoking an instant of dislocation, of doubt in the visitor. The work is located in the entrance – a long corridor full of anticipation, a brief moment in which everything has yet to begin.’ The Wavering Skies is the latest in a series of light works with which Kruip has attracted attention in recent years and will add a new dimension to her ambition to create site-specific/contextual work that seeks to establish a dynamic relationship with the public. Germaine Kruip studied at DasArts and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. She has had solo exhibitions at Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (Rehearsal, 2002), Kunsthalle Fridericianum Kassel (Rehearsal, 2003) and Galerie Juliette Jongma in Amsterdam (Every Building is an Estimate, 2005). Kruip has also taken part in several group exhibitions, including For Real at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2000), Cargo Series at the Bagagehal Amsterdam (2001), De Werkelijkheid at the Vleeshal Middelburg (2004) and 20/20 Vision at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2004). She is a one-time editor of Archis magazine, has collaborated with the De Mug met de Gouden Tand theatre company and recently fulfilled a commission from the Ministry of Finance to design a commemorative coin for Queen Beatrix’s silver jubilee. Kruip is co-publisher, with Maria Barnas and Maxine Kopsa, of the Missingbooks series. The Wavering Skies is co-curated and commissioned by Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen, Director of Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam in collaboration with Frieze Art Fair Projects.
