Gambit Masked Mando Man Writeup Joshua Zetumer, 2015, 2nd Draft We begin with Gambit on trial in 1984 and then flashback. Most of the script is set in ‘84 but it’s important to note Gambit left New Orleans in 1973. I’m skipping over a lot but will detail the main heist. Nathaniel Essex has hired Gambit and wants him to recover a trunk the Boudreaux's stole. Essex is said to be extremely pale with a diamond scar carved into his forehead. He says he is a geneticist who specializes in manufacturing. He’s handpicked Gambit for this heist because he sees immense potential in him. Gambit recruits Henri and Charlie Lebeau, Mask, Multiple Man and Dani Moonstar for the heist. Henri uses a drug that replicates different superpowers throughout the script. After the heist, it’s revealed the trunk contains a young mutant named Sarah (Marrow). Gambit figures out that Essex wants to harvest her healing abilities. Gambit wants to save her but Sarah wants to go back to Essex. Sarah takes Gambit to Essex's mutant slum compound, Storyville, located in an abandoned industrial center. This is where Gambit grew up before he lived with the Lebeau’s. Gambit learns that Essex manipulates a group of mutants to donate their blood so he can make the drug Henri used earlier. Gambit later finds a maternity ward full of mutant babies deep within the compound. He sees a baby being killed and goes to confront Essex. Gambit says he’ll destroy the operation but Essex interjects with a story. He tells the first child he used was his own. The child was weak and sick, as were the drugs made from its blood. He left the child alone on the streets to see if he could survive. Essex pulls a Darth Vader and reveals Gambit is that child. Gambit’s whole life has been an experiment concocted by his father, Essex. Essex wants Gambit to join him and promises Gambit that he’ll never go to prison. In a fury, Gambit attacks him. He’s stopped by Essex's security team and is knocked out. The script jumps back to the courtroom from the beginning. Gambit is on trial for the attempted murder. Essex testifies against him and Gambit is sentenced to fifty years in prison. However, fear not! The trial as an elaborate ploy, set up by the Lebeaus, to secure Gambit’s escape. Everyone there, except Essex, is a trained actor. It’s revealed Gambit was never in the courtroom and the Lebeaus hires Mystique to be in his place. While the fake trial was happening, the Lebeaus robbed and exposed Essex’s. His whole operation is done for. It ends with Gambit and the others celebrating Essex’s demise. Tie-ins to other Fox X-Men films: •A news report in 1973 shows Mystique saving Nixon (Days of Future Past) •The Boudreauxs stole Essex’s trunk when Nola flooded due to Magneto manipulating Earth’s magnetic field (Apocalypse)
