It has been m y g r e a t h o n o r t o b e t h e Publication D ire c tor of JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes. Thanks to this opportunity, I have tried a lot of new things: interviewing a m a z i n g l a d i e s , w r i t i n g inspirational stories, designing interactive columns with readers, etc. Thanks to my editorial team, I am very grateful that we have won the Publication Award at this year’s National Convention. Thanks to these experiences, I have discovered that I should not limit myself to what I know I can achieve, instead, I should believe in myself and BE YOU. This is the last issue of JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes 2021 with the theme of “ B e You”. W hen it comes to being yourself, there can be a lot of pressure from the outside world as it tries to influence who you are. In this issue, we have interviewed two talented ladies: a successful actress and dancer, Grace Wong, to share her boldness of pursuing her dream, and Winne Hung, a young and inspirational rowing athlete to share her learnings and challenges in her rowing career. Let’s grab a bar of chocolate, sip some floral tea, and enjoy our last issue of 2021! Thank you once again for supporting Snapshots! Message from Chief Editor Tiara Lau Director Be Bold. Be Empowered. Be You. | 3 Message from President We are now inching closer to the end of 2021. If you have to do a summary of 2021, how would you describe it? For me, this has been a year of self-discovery and growth. It has been my greatest honor to be the president of JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes, and through this position I have had the opportunity to meet and work with a diverse group of talented people from all walks of life. Whether it’s working with our partners, or with my dear Jayceettes members, I have found myself constantly going through a journey of self-discovery and self-reflection. Indeed, one of my most precious lessons this year is learning how to engage, empathize, and balance the needs of different parties in our quest to achieve positive change within our chapter and in the community at large. During this process, I came to learn about myself at a deeper level than ever before. Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” While I cannot claim to be anywhere as selfless as Gandhi nor the unnamed heroes who have served our communities quietly and diligently, 2021 has granted me the opportunity to be empowered by the numerous individuals around me – thank you all for inspiring me to inspect and reflect on myself, and for making me a better person. This year is surely an unforgettable milestone in my life and in my journey of self- discovery. Jayceettes girls are known to possess daring and innovative personalities. We hope to encourage members and women to have the courage to be themselves and achieve their own aspirations. Our flagship projects this year are focused on lifting up women both locally and internationally by enlisting partners from all sectors of society to help us break down barriers that stand in the way of those dreams, as well as to encourage women to stay bold and persistent in realizing their dreams. Remember “Be Bold. Be Empowered. Be You” is not just a theme for Jayceettes in 2021, it’s a mentality and a way of life that we encourage every woman to embody. Together we can change the world to a better place, and it is in our hands to make a difference. Vincy Wong President 4 | SNAPSHOTS / Oct 2021 Message from National President Our world is a place where conformity is the norm and sometimes it can be difficult to truly be yourself. It’s easy to give in to peer pressure and try to be like the majority. But imagine, if we were all the same, the world would be a terribly boring place. So it is important that we see ourselves for who we are, honor what makes us special and empower people around us. We have a choice to be whoever we want to be. Think about it: have you ever woken up in the morning with one idea in mind for what you want to do, only to find yourself doing something else because of what others expect you to do? Just like one of my favorite articles said “No lifetime, no matter how successful, will be truly rewarding or happy if you cannot learn to love yourself and be yourself”. It may seem hard, but great people throughout history have struggled to find their identities, too. Just as they rose to the challenge, you too can learn how to be yourself. Because only through life's ups and downs, the few mistakes we make and all the successes that we achieve, we can define who we are. And if anyone has the right to define who you are, please let it be yourself. My fellow Jayceettes, I wish you the courage and determination you need to Be Bold; Be Empowered; Be You! Let us be the best version of who we are. Senator Winnie Yeung National President Be Bold. Be Empowered. Be You. | 11 Be You - Be True to Yourself To be you, you have to be bold and be empowered. Over the years as an artist, Grace has always questioned herself, “ What are my core values and my passion? Am I really doing things that are meaningful to me? Am I doing things that I am really passionate about or just doing an every-day job? Is a good life better or a meaningful life better? To myself, I would definitely choose a meaningful life even though I know it would be much more difficult.”. 12 | SNAPSHOTS / Oct 2021 “ When you are confident, you believe that you have your special unique voice that deserves to be heard and respected. Be Empowered. Be You. | 13 Interview with President Vincy Wong Why did you join Jayceettes? My Jayceettes journey commenced when I came across a newspaper advertisement of our Master of Ceremony Competition back in 2008, when I was still a university student. I don’t know why I had the courage to enrol when I had only hosted one event before that, but I’m proud of myself for taking a bold step to challenge myself, and this important first step opened a door of possibilities. It was my great honour to have two past presidents, 2008 President Anny Kwan and 2009 President Jennifer Lam, introduce me to JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes. I came to understand that expanding my social circle could help me expose myself to more opportunities and be more confident. So I made the decision to join this female leadership organisation and was eventually inducted in 2009. 14 | SNAPSHOTS / Oct 2021 What are your most memorable moments in Jayceettes and throughout your JCI journey? There are a lot of memorable moments in my Jayceettes life, but if you ask me to pick, I will definitely choose the 2019 JCI Public Speaking Competition and the JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes 50th Anniversary Banquet. ASPAC Public Speaking Champion Journey JCI is not only a place for me to learn and to grow, the most precious thing I discovered here is sisterhood. I truly experienced the Jayceettes sisterhood when I participated in the ASPAC Public Speaking Competition. I’m really grateful to all the supportive members who accompanied me throughout my journey. Chairmanship Journey of Flagship Project It was my great honour to be the Project Chairman for the banquet of JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes 50th A nniversar y in 2019. With the unfailing support of the organising team along the way, we managed to make the banquet a great success, at the same time increased the solidarity of our members. A lot of our overseas sister chapter members came to our event as well. International Affairs is my favourite area. I really love the international sisterhood and brotherhood! Be Bold. Be Empowered. Be You. | 15 How do you see “Be You”? “Be You” is not only a core element of our theme this year, it is also the theme of our final publication SNAPSHOTS in 2021. Being yourself is easier said than done. There is always pressure from the outside world to influence who you are. Bombarded by ever-changing trends in the media and in our social circles, it is often tempting to take the safer, or easier, path. Remaining true to yourself becomes an act of courage, but I believe that if you want to reach your own full potential, you must first start by being yourself. Each of us have something precious to bring to the table, and we can all change the world in our own unique way. In fact, being yourself can be one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself and the people around you. Sometimes you can inspire others and impact their lives simply by being YOU. Dare to Dream - Be a Courageous Leader Realising our dreams requires courage, passion, and persistence – just like when I switched my career from being a Marketer to a Professional Emcee. There’s a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt that I always use to motivate myself, " Do not stop thinking of life as an adventure. You have no security unless you can live bravely, excitingly, imaginatively; unless you can choose a challenge instead of competence." 16 | SNAPSHOTS / Oct 2021 New Members Introduction Anna Li I am Anna.
