Note: If there are any rules disputes and a decision cannot be reached, a Claim must be made before teeing off on the next hole, or in the case of the last hole of the match, before all players in the match leave the putting green. The Claim must be reported to the Professional Golf Staff immediately after the round. FORMAT RULES HANDICAPS Match Play: Four-Ball Match Play, Total Accumulated Points Note: Please read Competition Rules & Information sheet for specific guidelines regarding the format. • August 15, 2020 through August 15, 2021 low index, lower of NCGA and Contra Costa Country Club measures. • Maximum differential of indexes is 9: Flights are based on low Course Handicap as listed above AND max index differential of 9.0 between partners. All teams who exceed this differential are reduced to 9.0 index points between the partners. When teams are reduced an asterisk will appear adjacent to the team total. • Handicaps will ‘spin-off’ the low handicap for each match. • Strokes are distributed according to the 9 holes being played. Half-strokes will be used and will not be rounded. • Each player in the match is responsible for his handicap and its application. TEES Acorn 4: Merion, Oakmont, Carnoustie, Pebble Beach Acorn 4/3 : Saint Andrews, Pinehurst, Muirfield, Kingsbarns Acorn 3: Valderrama, Royal Troon, Bandon Dunes, Prestwick SCORECARDS • Scorecards have been prepared for all matches. Record all hole-by-hole actual scores, including gimmes. • It is recommended that before a match, players make sure the handicaps are correct on their scorecard. PACE OF PLAY If you or your team are out of the hole being played, please ‘pick-up’ especially if you cannot help your team. Play without delay! Slow play will be penalized in the following order: • If a group is out of position, that group will be warned as a first warning reminder. • If they are not back in position after 15 minutes, the group will be moved forward into position, and any holes not played will be considered halved. • Our target 9-hole duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes; below that will be ideal. ANOTHER PACE OF PLAY REMINDER: Your position on the course is determined not by the group behind you, but rather, it is behind the group in front of you. GEN ER A L RU LES OF PLAY TIES In the event a tie occurs (in Total Points) for flight champion after Round 6, the tie will be broken by the team head-to-head results. If results are the same there will be a one hole Sudden Death Playoff. If tied, the second ball shall determine the winner, then a chip-off. Both partners will chip and the shortest combined distance will advance to the Championship Horserace. CELL PHONES Cell phones for outside calls for business are discouraged. Please be respectful of phone and music volumes. Phones for yardage verification are permitted. Please sand your divots, fix your ball marks, and rake the bunkers. Thank you and have fun! NO SHOWS, WITHDRAWALS, INCOMPLETE FLIGHT & MERCY RULE If necessary a single team member may carry on solo. This applies only to team match play events and excludes all horseraces and putting events. If, at the start of the event, a flight is not full, the remaining teams will play for points against par. For example, if the team net score is par, 1/2 point is received. If the team net score is under par 1 point is received. In order to prevent a run-away team score, the “Mercy Rule” has been implemented. The “Mercy Rule” states that the maximum amount of points a team can earn in a match is 15. The result is a 15-5 win, regardless of any additional points earned. The “Mercy Rule” does not apply to Round 6. FAQ’ S: MATCH PLAY/QUESTIONS & A NSW ER S There are substantial differences in the Rules of Golf between Stroke Play and Match Play. The following are highlights of the differences, as well as some general Match Play rules. RULE 2-5 DOUBT AS TO PROCEDURE: DISPUTES & CLAIMS: What happens if a dispute occurs between two teams? In Match Play, if a doubt or dispute arises between the players, a player may make a claim. If no duly authorized representative of the Committee is available within a reasonable time, the players must continue the match without delay. The committee may consider a claim only if it has been made in a timely manner and if the player making the claim has notified his opponent at the time (i) that he is making a claim or wants a ruling and (ii) of the facts upon which the claim or ruling is to be based. RULE 10-1 C ORDER OF PLAY: What happens if I hit out of turn? If a player plays when his opponent should have played, there is no penalty, but the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke so made, and, in correct order, play a ball as near as possible to the spot from which the original ball was last played. RULE 11-4 A TEEING GROUND: What happens if I hit from outside the markers? If a player, when starting a hole, plays a ball from outside the teeing ground there is no penalty, but the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke and play a ball from within the teeing ground. RULE 15-3 A WRONG BALL: What happens if I hit a ball that is not mine? If a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball, that player is out of the hole. If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at a wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged. RULE 18-3 BALL AT REST MOVED BY OPPONENT, CADDIE OR EQUIPMENT IN MATCH PLAY: What happens if my ball is moved? During Search – If, during search for a player’s ball, an opponent, his caddie or his equipment moves the ball, touches it or causes it to move, there is no penalty. If the ball is moved, it must be replaced. Other than During Search – If, other than during search for a player’s ball, an opponent, his caddie, or his equipment moves the ball, touches it purposely or causes it to move, except as otherwise provided in the Rules, the opponent incurs a penalty of one stroke. If the ball is moved, it must be replaced. FAQ’ S: MATCH PLAY/QUESTIONS & A NSW ER S FAQ’ S: MATCH PLAY/QUESTIONS & A NSW ER S RULE 19-2 A BALL IN MOTION DEFLECTED OR STOPPED BY PLAYER, PARTNER, CADDIE OR EQUIPMENT: What happens if my ball is deflected? If a player’s ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by himself, his partner or either of their caddies or equipment, he incurs a penalty of one stroke. RULE 19-3 BALL IN MOTION DEFLECTED OR STOPPED BY OPPONENT, CADDIE, OR EQUIPMENT: If a player’s ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by an opponent, his caddie, or his equipment, there is no penalty. The player may, before another stroke is made by either side, cancel the stroke and play a ball without penalty as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played, or he may play it as it lies. RULE 24 (Local Rule) LINE OF PLAY RELIEF: Relief may be provided from intervention by immovable obstructions, such as irrigation heads, on or within two club-lengths of the putting green when the ball lies within two club-lengths of the immovable obstruction. NOTE REGARDING CONCEDED PUTTS If my putt is conceded, may I complete the hole, anyway? Decision 2-4/6 states “ ... A player incurs no penalty for holing out in such circumstances.” However, if the act would be of assistance to a partner in a four-ball or best-ball match, the partner is, in equity, (Rule 1-4) disqualified for the hole. For new teams, be not intimidated. The betting is in small amounts and at your discretion. This noted, a few wagers make this event immeasurably more fun, as you have skin in the games. And there are a lot of games. Particularly, the team 5/5/5 bets and form at the back of this book are the MOST fun and we encourage this bet above all. It’s why everyone is gathered around the scoreboard after each round posts. Now, here is a summary of the bets, in the sequence in which you need to pay attention. And PAY ATTENTION YOU MUST!! W H AT CAN YOU BET ON? A LOT.
