RULES USGA Rules of Four-Ball Match Play apply; USGA & Local Rules on the club scorecard apply. Note: If there are any rules disputes and a decision cannot be reached, a Claim must be made before teeing off on the next hole, or in the case of the last hole of the match, before all players in the match leave the putting green. The Claim must be reported to the Professional Golf Staff immediately after the round. TEES Acorn 4: Merion, Oakmont, Carnoustie, Pebble Beach Acorn 4/3: Saint Andrews, Pinehurst, Muirfield, Kingsbarns Acorn 3: Valderrama, Royal Troon, Bandon Dunes, Prestwick HANDICAPS • August 15, 2020 through August 15, 2021 low index, lower of NCGA and Contra Costa Country Club measures. • Maximum differential of indexes is 9: Flights are based on low Course Handicap as listed above AND max index differential of 9.0 between partners. All teams who exceed this differential are reduced to 9.0 index points between the partners. When teams are reduced an asterisk will appear adjacent to the team total. • Handicaps will ‘spin-off’ the low handicap for each match. • Strokes are distributed according to the 9 holes being played. Half-strokes will be used and will not be rounded. • Each player in the match is responsible for his handicap and its application. GEN ER A L RU LES OF PLAY SCORECARDS • Scorecards have been prepared for all matches. Record all hole-by-hole actual scores, including gimmes. • It is recommended that before a match, players make sure the handicaps are correct on their scorecard. PACE OF PLAY If you or your team are out of the hole being played, please ‘pick-up’ especially if you cannot help your team. Play without delay! Slow play will be penalized in the following order: • If a group is out of position, that group will be warned as a first warning reminder. • If they are not back in position after 15 minutes, the group will be moved forward into position, and any holes not played will be considered halved. • Our target 9-hole duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes; below that will be ideal. ANOTHER PACE OF PLAY REMINDER: Your position on the course is determined not by the group behind you, but rather, it is behind the group in front of you. GEN ER A L RU LES OF PLAY TIES In the event a tie occurs (in Total Points) for flight champion after Round 6, the tie will be broken by the team head-to-head results. If results are the same there will be a one hole Sudden Death Playoff. If tied, the second ball shall determine the winner, then a chip-off. Both partners will chip and the shortest combined distance will advance to the Championship Horserace. NO SHOWS, WITHDRAWALS, INCOMPLETE FLIGHT & MERCY RULE If necessary a single team member may carry on solo. This applies only to team match play events and excludes all horseraces and putting events. If, at the start of the event, a flight is not full, the remaining teams will play for points against par. For example, if the team net score is par, 1/2 point is received. If the team net score is under par 1 point is received. In order to prevent a run-away team score, the “Mercy Rule” has been implemented. The “Mercy Rule” states that the maximum amount of points a team can earn in a match is 15. The result is a 15-5 win, regardless of any additional points earned. The “Mercy Rule” does not apply to Round 6. CELL PHONES Cell phones for outside calls for business are discouraged. Please be respectful of phone and music volumes. Phones for yardage verification are permitted. Please sand your divots, fix your ball marks, and rake the bunkers. Thank you and have fun! FAQ’ S: MATCH PLAY/QUESTIONS & A NSW E R S There are substantial differences in the Rules of Golf between Stroke Play and Match Play. The following are highlights of the differences, as well as some general Match Play rules. RULE 2-5 DOUBT AS TO PROCEDURE: DISPUTES & CLAIMS: What happens if a dispute occurs between two teams? In Match Play, if a doubt or dispute arises between the players, a player may make a claim. If no duly authorized representative of the Committee is available within a reasonable time, the players must continue the match without delay. The committee may consider a claim only if it has been made in a timely manner and if the player making the claim has notified his opponent at the time (i) that he is making a claim or wants a ruling and (ii) of the facts upon which the claim or ruling is to be based. RULE 10-1 C ORDER OF PLAY: What happens if I hit out of turn? If a player plays when his opponent should have played, there is no penalty, but the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke so made, and, in correct order, play a ball as near as possible to the spot from which the original ball was last played. RULE 11-4 A TEEING GROUND: What happens if I hit from outside the markers? If a player, when starting a hole, plays a ball from outside the teeing ground there is no penalty, but the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke and play a ball from within the teeing ground. FAQ’ S: MATCH PLAY/QUESTIONS & A NSW E R S RULE 15-3 A WRONG BALL: What happens if I hit a ball that is not mine? If a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball, that player is out of the hole. If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at a wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged. RULE 18-3 BALL AT REST MOVED BY OPPONENT, CADDIE OR EQUIPMENT IN MATCH PLAY: What happens if my ball is moved? During Search – If, during search for a player’s ball, an opponent, his caddie or his equipment moves the ball, touches it or causes it to move, there is no penalty. If the ball is moved, it must be replaced. Other than During Search – If, other than during search for a player’s ball, an opponent, his caddie, or his equipment moves the ball, touches it purposely or causes it to move, except as otherwise provided in the Rules, the opponent incurs a penalty of one stroke. If the ball is moved, it must be replaced. FAQ’ S: MATCH PLAY/QUESTIONS & A NSW E R S RULE 19-2 A BALL IN MOTION DEFLECTED OR STOPPED BY PLAYER, PARTNER, CADDIE OR EQUIPMENT: What happens if my ball is deflected? If a player’s ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by himself, his partner or either of their caddies or equipment, he incurs a penalty of one stroke. RULE 19-3 BALL IN MOTION DEFLECTED OR STOPPED BY OPPONENT, CADDIE, OR EQUIPMENT: If a player’s ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by an opponent, his caddie, or his equipment, there is no penalty. The player may, before another stroke is made by either side, cancel the stroke and play a ball without penalty as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played, or he may play it as it lies. RULE 24 (Local Rule) LINE OF PLAY RELIEF: Relief may be provided from intervention by immovable obstructions, such as irrigation heads, on or within two club-lengths of the putting green when the ball lies within two club-lengths of the immovable obstruction. NOTE REGARDING CONCEDED PUTTS If my putt is conceded, may I complete the hole, anyway? Decision 2-4/6 states “ … A player incurs no penalty for holing out in such circumstances.” However, if the act would be of assistance to a partner in a four-ball or best-ball match, the partner is, in equity, (Rule 1-4) disqualified for the hole. W H AT CA N YOU BET ON? A LOT. For new teams, be not intimidated. The betting is in small amounts and at your discretion. This noted, a few wagers make this event immeasurably more fun, as you have skin in the games. And there are a lot of games. Particularly, the team 5/5/5 bets and form at the back of this book are the MOST fun and we encourage this bet above all. It’s why everyone is gathered around the scoreboard after each round posts. Now, here is a summary of the bets, in the sequence in which you need to pay attention. And PAY ATTENTION YOU MUST!! PA R I-MU T U EL WAGER I NG The first 3 are the MAJOR bets you NEED to pay attention to. 1. The Team Pari-Mutuel (pre-tournament). You won’t want to miss getting your wagers down, especially for your own team... woe to those who have forgotten to bet on themselves, only to place well and not reap the rewards. You are betting on the overall tournament win/place/show in a simple $5 bet (or increments of $5). A small bet on a team that wins, places, or shows in the final hole of the Championship Horserace on Saturday afternoon could yield big dollars. The window on this bet closes before tee time on Thursday morning. You will have 72 teams to choose from, including yours. 2. Full Field Horserace Pari-Mutuel (Thursday PM) 72 teams will compete in a full field horserace. Bet win/ place/show in $5 increments (just like the other pari- mutuel wagers) This is one we are ALL in. Par 3’s from insane tee boxes. Well, not tee boxes. Sometimes a patch of dirt. So fun. But, another chance to bet on YOURSELF (think, think, think) or throw the dice. It’s Par 3’s so all bets are off, or should we say, on. Betting window closes after Thursday’s afternoon round (round 2). T H E T EA M AUCT ION 3. The Team Auction. “Buy” one or more teams in a silent and live auction. NEVER forget to buy your team or ½ your team before play begins. Odds are calibrated among 72 teams, remember this for the FLIGHT bet. 1/3rd of teams receive money back!!! • Each team will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. • The minimum bid is $100. All bets are in $25 increments. • The silent bidding opens at 3:30 PM Wednesday, and the bidding finale for the Team Auction is in 5 minute increments from 6:00 to 6:20 PM Wednesday evening. • Teams that do not buy themselves will have the right to buy up to 50% of their team’s action from acquiring team or the staff, but, this transaction MUST take place prior to Thursday’s 1st Round 8:00 AM Match. • If a team is not purchased, their payout will go back into the pool. • Pay-outs for the auction will be presented to the winners after the Championship Horserace Saturday night. Important Note: The teams with the highest Silent Auction bids will step up to become part of the Live Auction, which takes place during our kickoff dinner on Wednesday evening. PAY-OUT PERCENTAGES Overall Winners.......................................16% Runner-Up Place...................................... 12% Third Place Show....................................... 9% Fourth Place.............................................. 7% Fifth Place................................................ 7% Sixth Place................................................ 7% Seventh Place............................................ 5% Eighth Place.............................................. 5% Ninth Place............................................... 5% Tenth Place............................................... 3% Eleventh Place........................................... 3% Twelfth Place............................................. 3% Flight Runners-Up................................... 1.5% *If darkness requires 3-Hole Horserace, percentages will modify slightly. BET T I NG CON T I N U ED 4. 5/5/5 Betting (side bets) This is THE most fun betting of the tournament. Make new friends. Bet them. Every round is worth almost as much as a stop at Starbucks. What you’re doing is guessing that you have played a round better than the other team. It’s so fun, and in the end, usually a flesh wound or enough to go to Starbucks. The bet is simple, $5 per-man per-match, and $5 for the overall total, per-man. Seven total bets. The details: There are six 9-hole rounds and one overall total. Each team will get a point total in each round (up to 15 in rounds 1-5 and up to 20 in round 6). Just compare points with your opponent in each match. Higher total wins that round. You will win some and lose some, and settle after round 6 when the scores are posted. By the way, it’s completely unsporting to leave the grounds absent payment in case of complete meltdown. 5. The Par 3 Vegas Holes – We Stake You!!! • First, the Committee is paying for this bet. You CAN’T lose. • Pretty ladies will still be on the course, but only on the green. • All players will automatically be ‘staked’ and share a common pool. • Shots inside a smaller circle will share in a $1,000 pot. • We will donate almost $2K to Junior Golf Program. • No handicap adjustment…seriously, this is for Junior golf. EV EN MOR E BETS 6. The $20 Daily Skins Game (Thursday & Friday Only) This is a bet to seriously consider, IF you feel lucky. Lots of potential here for a big score, presuming you card a low one. On Thursday and Friday rounds there is a $20 per day [gross and net] skins bet, to be paid at registration. Rules: A gross skin will be awarded on a hole if a single golfer, among the bettors, achieves the sole low gross score. That golfer’s net skin score cannot be used to tie the net skin for the same hole. However, if the golfer with the gross skin also has the lowest net skin, (I.e. no ties) the golfer will be awarded both skins. For example, a gross eagle on a hole which also results in a net double eagle would get both skins as long as both scores are outright winners. Importantly: A HOLE IN ONE TAKES THE ENTIRE DAY’S POT It’s a lot of work to score this effort, and if you win, a gratuity to the Golf Shop team for their effort is appreciated. THE CHAMPIONSHIP HORSERACE 7. T he Team Pari-Mutuel (Pre-Championship Horserace). A second chance on picking the win/place/show teams. In this bet, you wager on the tournament win/place/show in a simple $5 bet (or increments of $5), selecting from only 12 flight winners in the Championship Horserace. Again, a small bet on a team that wins, places, or shows in the final hole of the Championship Horserace on Saturday afternoon could pay dividends. The window on this bet opens after Saturday’s round 6 and before the Championship Horserace begins. THE CHAMPIONSHIP HORSERACE WHEN Saturday, September 11th, 3:30 PM WHERE Hole to be announced — tees determined by flight QUALIFIERS 12 Flight Champions FORMAT Modified Scotch Teams will select a player to hit the first tee shot. Teams will then alternate shots until the ball is holed. Thereafter, players on teams must alternate TEE SHOTS during the Horserace. Once on the green, teams will be required to alternate putt until the ball is holed. ELIMINATION Depending on start time and available daylight, the Committee reserves the right to organize the Horserace to be played on three or four holes. The three teams remaining after eliminations will play the 9th hole for the 2021 DIABLO VISTA CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP. TIES If teams tie for the high score on any hole during the Horserace, a chip-off will be held from a pre-determined area. The teams chipping the farthest away from the hole will be eliminated. In the event a chip-off is required on the 9th hole, both players on each team will chip and the team with the smaller combined distance from the hole shall be the winner. Note: the distance between ball and hole will be measured to determine the superior shot irrespective of lie. Example: A ball in bunker or rough 20 feet from the hole is superior to a ball on the green 21 feet from the hole. HANDICAP Teams will be given 40% of their combined handicaps and strokes will be taken as they fall on the scorecard. Team handicaps will wheel off the low team handicap in the Horserace. DI A BLO V ISTA CLASSIC A SMALL R AKE FOR THE BENEFIT OF YOUR FELLOW GOLFERS. The Diablo Vista Classic is celebrating its 58th Anniversary. It’s longevity and continued popularity as the East Bay’s premier Invitational is in large part due to the extraordinary year-long efforts of Contra Costa Country Club members and staff volunteers. Our endeavor is to continue to keep the event participation fee reasonable, but always to ensure that the event continues to provide quality and excitement from the first minute until the last putt drops. We’re also all about transparency, and to this end, please be advised that the Classic takes a modest 10% ‘rake’ on all games of chance. If only Washington and Sacramento were so modest. TIP YOUR CAP TO OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS! Spouses and significant others are encouraged to attend to enjoy food and beverages on the course.
