Martin Jagger is an Executive Advisor for Energy Transition & Decarbonisation Strategies, utilising 40 years of extensive industry experience leading global and regional teams across various energy sectors. Below is a concise summary of Martin’s key achievements and experience. Martin’s career at a glance. 7 Global Thought Leadership Active in shaping global energy policies, technology roadmaps, and regulatory frameworks, with a focus on sustainability and decarbonisation. Can you provide an overview of your career in the energy sector? SPOTLIGHT SERIES: DR MARTIN JAGGER I worked for Shell for 36 years, leading teams with responsibility for both global and regional portfolios. Management experience includes carbon capture and storage, energy transition, E&P strategy, governance and competitive business intelligence, new business development, exploration and appraisal, and well delivery performance management. Established Shell's Carbon Capture and Storage Centre of Excellence in 2007, supporting the development of emerging international standards, regulation, and policy structures for safe carbon storage. Lead author of the Carbon Capture and Storage Methodology accepted under the UNFCCC Clean Development Mechanism at COP17. A member of Shell’s CCS Leadership Team from 2008 to 2011, led the Zero Emissions Platform Technology Roadmap in 2010, held leading committee positions on IEAGHG Workgroups for Regulatory, Risk Assessment, MMV and Modelling, and served as a lecturer on IEAGHG CCS Summer Schools. Over 25 years of experience in the Middle East, including assignments within ADNOC’s Executive Office, as strategy advisor to H.E. Ihsan Abdul Jabbar, the Iraqi Oil Minister, as Shell Exploration Ventures Manager for the Middle East, and as Shell's Business Opportunity Manager for the Saudi Gas Initiative, plus early and mid-career assignments covering Oman, Kuwait, and Syria. Executive Consultant specialising in Energy Transition and Decarbonisation Strategies since 2021, serving as Energy Transition and Decarbonisation Advisor to the Sumitomo Corporation of the Middle East, Governing Advisor to the Syneidesis Group, a Sovereign Wealth Fund - Family Office Alliance, and holding board advisory roles with 44.01, an Omani start-up focused on carbon capture and mineralisation, and with Angara Global. O N : Can you share an example of a project where your leadership significantly impacted the outcome? In September 2013, I was seconded from Shell to ADNOC, where I was asked to write an Exploration Strategy. The strategy had three main components: (1) Introduce exploration licensing rounds; (2) Shoot 3D seismic from border to border, both onshore and offshore; and (3) Create an Unconventional Exploration department, separate from the Exploration Division. The strategy was accepted and fully implemented. Successful exploration licensing rounds and unconventional oil and gas activities resulted in significant reserves increases and allowed ADNOC to increase its installed production capacity from 3.5 mmbbls to 5.0 mmbbls. What unique value do you bring to companies in the energy sector, particularly in a consultancy role? I see and can articulate extended value chains that are not apparent to many organisations. I have successfully integrated these opportunities into Energy Transition Strategies that link the energy sector and hard-to-abate industries. What is your vision for the future of the energy sector, and how do you plan to contribute to its evolution? I have an optimistic vision for the energy sector, focusing on three key areas: technology, economy, and society. With enabling regulation, there will be continued rapid advancements in renewable energy technologies that will drastically reduce costs and increase energy efficiency. Breakthroughs in carbon capture and green hydrogen will become commercially viable, enabling deep decarbonisation across the hard-to-abate sectors. The integration of smart grids and AI will optimise energy distribution and enable access to clean energy globally. By 2040, most of the world’s energy will come from renewables, and innovation in energy technology will outpace demand growth, creating a tipping point where clean energy becomes cheaper and more accessible than fossil fuels. The energy transition will drive a recovery in economic growth and job creation. Investment in renewable energy infrastructure, electrification, and energy efficiency will create millions of new, highly paid jobs worldwide. The leading fossil fuel economies will use low-cost, low-carbon barrels to successfully diversify their economies and lead a just energy transition. Developing countries will leapfrog to clean energy, avoiding fossil fuel dependency and driving sustainable economic growth. Despite initial scepticism, public awareness and support for the energy transition will reach unprecedented levels, driven by a new generation, education, grassroots movements, and communication on the benefits to all of clean energy. Reluctant governments will be pushed to implement progressive policies such as carbon pricing, while also introducing energy justice legislation that ensures all communities have access to clean, affordable energy and benefit from the energy transition.
