FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Julian Goldstein, (202) 239- 9282 Community Liaison “NAACP Chapter joins Representative Owolewa in Fight for DC Statehood” (DC) US Representative Oye Owolewa has announced a partnership with the NAACP District of Columbia Branch. Representative Owolewa has launched the “#DCStatehoodSolidarity” Pledge, in which the local and national organization will highlight DC Statehood as a key issue of equity and human rights. This effective vehicle for activism will broadcast on their website homepage, where organizations can demonstrate their support for DC Statehood. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is an uniquely positioned organization recognized globally for its rich history in successfully supporting underserved and underrepresented communities of color. The NAACP understands its critical role in amplifying the fight to make the District of Columbia, a majority-minority city—the 51st state. “Historically, in the era following the Home Rule Movement -- the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People passed unanimous resolutions of support at their national convention.” This partnership provides a pipeline for the underserved communities of the District government to efficiently access oversight, resources, and advocacy with 21st century connectivity. “I commend the leadership of NAACP,” says Rep Oye, “for being a consistent champion for equality. Today, DC residents are forced to live as second-class citizens because we lack voting representation. DC Statehood is a social justice issue and I am proud of the continued support for our cause from the NAACP. The NAACP will hopefully be the first of many organizations to show support for DC Statehood on their website homepage.” ### Release Date: April 12, 2022
