Dear Friend, For the last five years, Lesa Driscoll has been living in a dark and gloomy place. Her Fredericton rooming house had no windows and was not a safe place to live. She had no control over who her roommates were or what they would do in her home. Steep stairs made it extremely difficult to go outside as Lesa lives with Huntington’s disease, a brain disorder that results in physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms. “I was crying all the time. I didn’t know what to do.” When Lesa got connected with Ability NB, her situation began to change drastically. We helped Lesa secure a safe, affordable and accessible apartment. We leveraged our networks to furnish the apartment and make it a home. We got her weighted utensils to reduce shaking and make it easier to eat. We helped secure sock aids and a dressing stick, which allow her to get dressed by herself. We connected with a community member to sew a pouch for her walker, enabling her to bring items safely as she moves around. We worked with Social Development to get the services she needs to live independently and connected her with Para Transit services so she can come and go as she pleases. Lesa can’t believe how much her life has changed in just 3 months. She is able to go outside with ease and even has a new romance in her life - something she had long given up on. “If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know where I’d be. I can do things I couldn’t before. There are fewer things in the way.” Ability NB meets people where they are at and gets them the supports they need to live independent and full lives. As a non-profit, donations from people like you are necessary to support our work. Donate today and help us reach more people living in unsafe conditions. For 63 years Ability New Brunswick has enhanced the quality of life of people with a mobility disability. Your donation has a significant, local impact.
