DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 1 DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 2 "TL;DR"( - TOO LONG FOR ME DIDN'T READ) A.K.A. SUMMARY (FOUR PAGES) The following story is based on hidden fact s about people and timelines that are critical to the U.S.A's beginnings. The people represented in this story have hidden, direct or indirect links within parts of Mormonism's own history. As I've uncovered and put them together for this, they finally shine a light on the truth about $500 billion dollar Mormonism's own pre - modern beginnings: That Mormonism is the worst fraud hiding more than 190 years of the some of the worst tragedies in American history. However, with this story and Part's Two and Three of this PDF, the future is brighter than ever. - The U.S.A. is 225 years old and has 50 states. During the first 109 unpredictable years, 45 states were formed. - In 1812, on just an eastern fraction of the American Continent, there were 18 rivaling, failing states making up the pre - modern USA. These 18 states w ere surrounded by a bunch of other countries being big meany's at the time. This includes Great Britain, Spain, France and Mexico. Some of those countries kept starting wars to try and to take over the 18 different states of the U.S.A - Many of the founding fathers and other patriots were members of a patriotic group . For this story the group's name is "The Greater Brotherhood." They were afraid that the U.S.A. was not going to be able to keep forming new states and would get taken over by the other countries because of that . Different part s of The Greater Brotherhood started making different plans to try to conquer the rest of the American continent so the U.S.A. could keep making more states but the plans kept failing because of how violent things w ere and other things - During this time, a man who was a wealthy landowner, a wall street lawyer and a special agent from Palmyra, New York named Luther Bradish and his friend who was a rockstar poly math and patriot in New York City named Samuel Latham Mitchil l co me up with an id ea for a patriotic book to share among thousands of friends to help bring the states together ! Other people have also been working on book ideas of their own like parts of The Greater Brotherhood's plan suggests but they aren't as smart or as cool as 35 year old Luther and 55 year old Samuel Luther also tells his wealthy, landowner, childhood friend from Palmyra, New York and named Martin Harris about the book idea. Martin is also 35 like Luther but Martin still lives in Palmyr a. - Luther doesn't know that Martin is a little psycho nowdays or that Martin already hijacked part of The Greater Brotherhood's plan for his own purposes. - In 1816, Luther's wife and unborn son die in childbirth. Also about this time, a nomadic, trav eling family named the Smiths arrive in Palmyra to find work digging the recently announced DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 3 Erie Canal. Martin is behind the planning of the Erie Canals' route in Palmyra and has made sure it will be dug to pass right by his family's lands because it will make them even more rich! - After offering the Smith's a shack to live in in exchange for working on part of his farm, part of Martin's secret plan to save the U.S.A. begins to include Martin convincing a young man in the Smith family named Alvin Smith who is about 18 years old t o t ell everyone about special things happening to Alvin and that they should follow Alvin into the West to save the U.S.A! Alvin doesn't really know that o ther people are also telling their own stories about special things happening to them too and that peopl e should follow them into the West too! - As word of some books being published starts to get around Martin decides that his plan needs a book too but he is not a very good writer . He tries to convince Luther to use the book Luther and Samuel are workin g on for his own plan instead but Luther doesn't want to. Because Samuel knows the governor of New York , Samuel comes through Palmyra every few months to ch eck on work for the Erie Canal and meets with Martin too. Martin tries to convince Samuel to use the book for his own plan but Samuel doesn't want to either. Because of this, Martin makes a secret plan to steal the book that Luther and Samuel are working on. - In 1819, Luther leaves to Egypt and Turkey on a special assignment by the U.S. President not k nowing if he'll return. When Martin hears about this he is very angry because it will make it harder for him to steal the book. - In 1820, Alvin decides that he doesn't want to do Martin's plan anymore and he just wants to get married and be a farmer This makes Martin even more angry so Martin switches from grooming Alvin to grooming Alvin's younger brother Joseph who is 14 years old. Martin believes he made a mistake by first choosing Alvin who was already 18 at the time and this is why he Martin ch ooses Joseph instead of their other brother Hyrum who has now also just turned 18. - Over the next three and a half years, Alvin doesn't really bother with Martin or the stories Martin is having Joseph tell everyone because Martin is rich and sometimes i t seems like the stories could work out good for everyone Samuel comes to Palmyra often to check on work for the construction of the Erie Canal that Martin is also behind in Palmyra. Martin makes sure the Erie Canal will pass right by his family's lands because it will make them even more rich. Martin also keeps having Joseph change his because Samuel is having a hard time finishing the book alone because he has so many other patriotic projects going on. - Around 1 822, with Luther still gone, Samuel , st ill a rockstar polymath and patriot in New York City, gets to know a famous novelist , family man and generational patriot named James Fenimore Cooper who is 33. James and his wife and kids are new to New York City after James recently got famous as a new w riter . With Samuel's institutional level knowledge about many things and James ' talent, they, using other cool boo ks from friendly authors and their own cool ideas and cool stories too, put together most of what started as Luther and Samuel's book idea To do this, Samuel and James get together in New York City several times a week and sometimes after big parties. They even put a bu nch of secret codes in the book Some of the codes secretly relate to James in heartwarming ways from tragedies he's experience d and adventures he's had . With all their work, p arts of the book a re sounding really awesome. I t's getting to be about 500 pages long too! (Like a lot of James books.) - During this time , Samuel engages the participation of a lonely college professor who is 27 years old and named Charles Anthon to provide some of the research he want's James to use in the book. Charles is gifted in ways but challenged in others. Samuel knows Charles' dad. DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 4 - Samuel and James also get letters from Luther about Egypt a nd other amazing things. Luther is thrilled about the progress of the book. To celebrate, Luther tries to claim a small one room temple in Egypt called "The Temple of Dendur" by carving his name in the side of the ancient temple! - In the summer of 1824 with Luther still gone and Joseph set to turn 18 on December 23rd, Alvin decides he's tired of Martin messing with Joseph and starts telling Joseph about parts of Martin's plan that don't make sense because other people in other areas ar e saying the same things Alvin sta rts to convince Joseph that he and Joseph and the rest of their family should just be farmers not worry about Martin. This makes Martin really mad so just a few weeks before Joseph turns 18, Martin secretly forces someone else to kill Alvin by poisoning him. Martin ma kes sure Joseph knows that if Joseph doesn't do everything Martin tells him to, Martin will kill Joseph's other brother's and sisters and parents too. Martin really wants to save the U.S.A. by having people fo llow Joseph into the West and claim the West for the U.S.A. so the U.S.A. can start forming states again and he will stop at nothing to do it! - Martin finds a way to steal the book. - In 1826 Luther finally returns to New York City from Egypt . While visiting his family in Palmyra he finds out some of the truth about Martin. After he warns James, James takes his wi fe and kids and flees New York City even though James is at the height of his career as a famous writer in New York City. - Martin then has another guy named Oliver Cowdery try to put the book together with some of Mar tin's own ideas but none of the ideas make sense and it keeps causing problems and making the book sound mixed up in parts - Martin puts together a plan to publish the bo ok anyway by making another family in Palmyra use printing equipment that Martin secretly bought and saying it's their own. Their last name is Grandin - In 1829, Martin tells Joseph to tell everyone that an angel who kept appearing to Joseph over the la st few years f inally let Joseph have the book. - Martin even wants Joseph to fake a document making it look like Martin gave Joseph a huge loan to pay for the publishing of the book but Martin doesn't get around to doing it until five months after the pub lishing started. Martin signs it and makes Joseph sign it and even makes Oliver Cowdery sign it. - The publishing takes around 7 - 9 months and is finished in March of 1830. - During these past few years , Joseph also came up with different plans of his own to escape Martin. More and more delays keep happening and keep ing Martin from being able to send enough people into the West. Through James' connections with the same publisher, Charles Anthon will meet a complicated writer 11 years younger than him na med Henri Le Rennet (aka Edgar Allen Poe .) They will become more than friends although Charles won't tell Martin about Henri as Charles provides Martin with some writings after 1830 and Samuel's death in 1831. In total, a nother 14 years will pass between 1 830 - 1844. During this time, thousands of newcomers follow Joseph. They even build a city in Illinois called "Nauvoo." In the spring of 1844, Martin finally orders Joseph to begin preparing to lead thousands of followers into the West to claim the West an d save the U.S.A - Instead, Joseph tries his own plan to escape Ma rtin by telling everyone to spread the word far and wide that he is running for President of the United States of America as an Independent against Democrat James Polk and Whig Henry Clay . Momentum would not catch on as he and his own private militia expected it too. DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 5 - When Martin finds out about Joseph's announcement he is bent on rage. Within weeks he orders Joseph and Joseph's brother Hyrum to be murdered. A deceptive trap is set and on J une 27, 1844 their murders are carried out in public view Then , 33 days later, Martin orders their other brother Samuel to be quietly murdered by poisoning - "33" is a very significant number to The Greater Brotherhood . This was Martin's way of tel ling The Greater Brotherhood that nothing can stop him and he will stop at nothing to keep anyone from getting in his way. - Over the next few months, the followers split into different groups and scatter to Wiconsin Terri tory, Pennsylvania, on a ship t o go around South America to the west coast of the American continent and some stay in Nauvoo. Martin is able to have the largest group of a few thousand followers go with his friend Brigham Young to secretly go West. - After about two more years and stops in Iowa Territory and Nebraska Territory where hundreds would die and thousands would wait, with only about 148 men, women and children leading the final charge to what they believe would be the west coast , Brigham at a valley in the center of t he West instead s uddenly stops and says "This is the place ." This was the area that was also part of The Greater Brotherhood's plan that no other following could get to Over the next three days that small group of 148 would filter into that valley. This h appened July 21 - 24, 1847. - Over the next few weeks and months, thousands of people flow to that place and beyond Brigham sends followers to create settlements in all directions across thousands of miles just as The Greater Brotherhood's plan calls for. The other countries who already claim the western part of the American continent can do nothing about it. - The West is finally won! The 24 year drought of the U.S.A. not bein g able to make any new states i s over! The U.S.A. i s saved! - In 1849, many people will go from the east coast to the west coast because one of Martin's other friends named Samuel Brannan sends w ord that there i s gold to be discovered on the west coast! People will continue filling in parts of the rest of the continent. - In add ition to the four Smith brothers, over the 20 years of Mormonism's hidden beginnings other people who will do things under Martin's command and his hijacked, frankensteined plan will also be murdered or die mysteriously along the way Eventually Martin wil l publicly make it to that valley too and say : "T he book made all this " He will be believed to live to the age of 92. - Martin will be able to do all this because he had six dark intangibles that no one else had. * This story is told by an angel named Lucy Hill Harris. She was Martin's first cousin and when he was 25 and she was 15 he forced her to wed him . She had lots of babies from him and then when Martin was 53 she mysteriously died and a year later Martin married a 21 year old named Caroline Youn g . Caroline was was the niece of his Brigham and she had lots of babies from him too. To tell thi s version of the story , the angel Lucy found an eccentric scribe named Vox Chiasmus and he wrote it down for her (even though an old radio he had kept blasti ng 80's music.) The angel Lucy is "The Bone Fire Girl" because she knew all of Martin's skeletons in the closet and by telling this story she is burning the bones of those skeletons in the fires of truth. Because this has been a lot of emotional and intellectual heavy lifting over four decades , this comprehensive three part PDF I've put together and am offering to the user for free is less polished then it should be Because sometimes "laughter is the best medicine" and even though what I've uncovered and put together demands endless, interweaving , C olonial and Western genre told in traditional ways , I've chosen to tell the story this way for now in an attempt to also lighten it up a bit for victims and non - victims alike This factually based, hid den story I have created is not disillusionment . It is not confirmation bias . It is not apophenia . It is a thrilling new American beginning told in an unorthodox w ay (just like it should be.) Out of respect to that preference and to minimize any chances for confusion or suspicion of ill will about this PDF , it needs to be noted that the use of the word "Mormonism" in this PDF is in reference to the entire organization (including more than a dozen corp orations) and the entire organization's past, present and future functions rather than just the ecclesiastical functions that preferred reference infers Hopefully, and also for many reaso ns, the use of this term in regards to the entire organization is al so fair and understandable without suspicion of ill will. Be cause this PDF is available globally and because of what this PDF identifies as 55 signs of psychological abuse, what it shares about rampant corruption in parts of Utah 's politics and legal systems and what it reveals about certain parts of Mormonism as an organization , and how that may affect followers from all walks of life, especially those serving as missionaries, it's important to remember, "an ounce of prevention i s worth a pound of cure." Consider setting a timer for 10 minutes and see what pounds of cure you discover for yourself, your loved ones and your neighbors. If you look down because it seems the sun has passed you will miss the stars... RESOURCES If yo u are one of the millions of victims of the counterintuitive prevaricating of some of these parts of Mormonism or are one of the hundreds of thousands of descendants of any of the people fictionally represented in this factually based rewriting of U.S. and L.D.S History please do not take any of this personally as you may have been conditioned to do. Remember, this is not about blame mongering . T his is about conversation and discovering the bright blossoms from the bright river o f healing. Remember to always call at least 2 or 3 resources so you can have more than one re source to discover what will work for you. Consider looking for other resources using similar key words for your area as well as working with establ ished community resources to organize your own public support groups in public buildings with other survivors. Other resources are shared in Part Three of this PDF. ****** DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 8 ABOUT THIS PDF Like just about any work - in - progress ever written, this work - in - progress has been put together so far under different circumstances that were very much the opposite of ideal (Hopefully that will help explain any parts that are less than polished .) There a re also dozens of resources put together by others that this work cou ldn't have been done so far without and who I look forward to acknowledging more specifically and communicating with as this work continues. A l ink to this PDF can be found online PDFHost .io by searching "The Bone Fire Girl" for the most recent version. As of January 2023, the four previous versions have a total of about 9,500 view s since October 2022. www.TheBoneFireGirl.com should also take you there but it doesn't always seem to work. ABOUT ME My name is Michael D. Jarman. Nice to meet you. I'm sorry for a ny challenges this three part body of work and the 125 links I've shared as part of it may bring you. This work is important because it's about what Utah has been, what Utah is and what Utah can be for it's 3.2 million full - time residents, it's tens of t housands of part - time residents, more than 10 million visitors every year , the rest of the U.S.A and the rest of the globe Because of what this work I have put together r eveals and what needs to be done because of it, it seems I should also be Utah's governor for a t least one term starting ASAP. In addition to many other challenges , t his will allow me to show Utah's le gislature what needs to be done. In addition to what "The Bo ne Fire Girl" reveals this includes the closing up of more than 18 gaping holes in Utah's corrupt courthouses perpetuated through Utah's broken politics. As part of this, I'd also like to ask Utah 's current governor Spencer Cox for his endorsement. (All but 3 of Utah's governors over the past 126 years including Cox have been victims of Martin Harris' deceptions). This is also something I believe he will be open to because in recent years it's become apparent that he has other talents that if he is given the freedom to cultivate them, he will do amazing things that will be rewarding for Utah's diverse cultures in many other ways. Two of the other conversations continue d in Part 2 and 3 of this PDF that need to be mentioned here are in regards to Utah hav ing an office for it's own Surgeon General to see to it that many critical conversations about providing more than adequate emotional healthcare for children and grown ups continue to advance with results. The other is changing the name of the newly rebuilt, $4 billion dollar Salt Lake City International Airport to "T he Robert Redford International Airport at Salt Lake City " in acknowledgement of Mr. Redford's immeasurable contributions to this engaging region going back more than five decades. This i ncludes him choosing to call the Wasatch Mountain region home and that contributing a part of the region being home to the benchmark setting Sundance Film Festival For now, my contact information regarding all this can be obtained through a donation m ad e at www.TheBoneFireGirl.org ( That platform will also allo w you to raise funds for "The Bone Fire Girl" as part of the critical causes shared in this PDF among your own circles of family, friends, loved ones and associates. ) There are a lot of conversatio ns to have and a lot of work to do. Although I created the context of this new story, I meticulously researched and used hidden, forgotten and known facts from Mormon history and U.S. history to create it. B ecause of that , this story is more historically accurate than either of the tw o narratives for Mormonism you may have already heard. This includes a 24 year long, hidden, gaping hole in the U.S.A. forming new States during colonial times. The same time the secret beginnings of Mormonism took place under Martin Harris' dark hands. 2) A new spectrum identifying 55 psychological abuses Many of these abuses were developed in s tudies somehow hidden within imposter parts of Harvard University , Columbia University ( New York ) , Brigham Young University and other known instituti ons. 3 ) A new 5 part positive cycle to surviving these 55 abuses and other emotional health challenges. 4 ) A new 5 part positive c ycle to creating " The Heard Immunity" to suicide. 5 ) 18 gaping holes hidden in Utah's tribalistic c ourthouses perpetuated through Utah's broken politics . These gaping holes allow tribalistic members of a deceptive organization known as "The Utah State Bar" to exploit and even purposely destroy the lives of thousands of Utahans' from all walks of life every year for their trib e's own secret financial gain Tribe members hide behind the law unde r the titles of " attorney ," " commissioner, " " judge " and other titles. 6 ) The IRS' counterintuitive role towards multi - billion dollar parts of Mormonism. Unlike millions of other registered for - profit corporations in the U.S.A, somehow these for - profit corporations are not taxed because they quietly rely on the volunteer efforts of millions of followers to accomplish their for - profit financial purposes. ****** DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 11 WHERE ALL OF THIS COMES FROM For the past 192 years , regardless of any inferred conflict or not between any higher powers, there have been two prominent but discrepancy filled cultural narratives for Mormonism : 1) T he founder of Mormonism was a n entirely innocent child prophet 2) The founder of Mormonism was an entirely guilty child con - artist (and worse ) However , for one reason or another, n either of these cultural narratives holds up to all of LDS history AND U.S. History combined from pre - modern times through today. Each narrative contains counterintuitive discrepancies, conflicting information and leaves far too many pieces of the puzzle out. 1) In the first narrative a walking con tradiction of a 38 year old man ( uneducated, wealthy, well connected, patriotic, violent, altruisti c, delu sional and a war veteran ) named Martin Harris (1783 - 1875) was quietly needed to pay for an unprecedentedly large printing of that completely innocent 14 - year - old - boy - turned - 24 year - old - man's vast and flawed 531 page compilation. (Or what was to have been 647 pages due to the equivalent of 116 published pages being lost or stolen). Although the compilation would be marketed as "Th e Most Correct Book On Earth" the published version of it will also eventually have more than 3,913 changes made to it w hile critically anachronistic and /or counterintuitive details are left in. Among other things, this includes stories regarding work horses and the use of silk, steel and other tangibles as well as no me ntion of the Bald Eagle, a bird native to North America.) The compilation was also claimed to represent the work of 19 ancie nt authors. The four most prominent authors wrote 36.5%, 10.9%, 7.4% and 7.2% of it respectively. The rest of the authors wrote betw een 4.6% and .4% of it respectively (One of the reasons for not updating certain things may be because correcting some things would inadvertently change others. ) In yet another counterintuitive contradiction given the work represented by different parts of Mormonism to have been performed for the compilation , i t's also important to note that the controversial Martin Harris was 22 years older than that boy and in 1808, when Harris was 25 years old , Harris forced his own 15 ye ar old first cousin named Lucy Hill (1792 - 1836) to be his bride At that time, t hat boy , who was named Joseph Smith, would have been about 2 .5 years old and living with the beginnings of the Smith family hundreds o f miles away in Sharon, Vermont. Martin got his way with anything and everything because t he powerful Harris family controlled critical parts of Palmyra with another family of the last name Bradish that they were on good terms with for the time. ( The Bradish's had moved to Palmyra, then known as "Swifts Landing" from Boston, Massachusetts about 350 miles away around 1792 and about a year before the Harris's moved to Palmyra from Easton, New York about 200 miles away. As time went on and after Martin's father Nathan and Luther's father were "Roa d Overseers" in the region, Martin saw to it that he and Luther's brothers were "nominated" as alternating Road Overseers next. Martin's personal span in this position will include seven critical years encompassing the canal's controversial fund raising an d peculiar route planning processes ( even during the War of 1812. ) Because of this DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 12 influence, Martin will make absolutely sure the canal passes right by the Harris' lands. For this story, Martin will also do many "favors" related to the canal's route and e verything else his talented, forked tongue can touch. For him, there will always be favors to do and reasons to expect something in return from them. The traveling Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith family ( the parent's of Joseph Smith and his 7 siblings ) , won't move to Palmyra until 1816 , 23 years after the Harris's ). 25 year old Martin Harris ' s marriage to his 15 year old first cousin Lucy also wouldn't be his only one. During more than two decades of Mormonism's public beginnings and a fter years of Lucy separating from Martin (but no public divorce), Lucy would suspiciously die at age 44. Martin was 53 At age 54 , Harris would ma rry 21 year old Caroline Young who would also eventually separate from him without public divorce. ( The re are alarming reasons for these separations especially with children involved ) Depending on what parts of history you read, a fter marrying Lucy, Harris would father 6 children from her and then father 7 children from Caroline ( although tragically not all of the children would live past birth. ) In regards to the printing of the compilation, t he public, modern day equivalent estimates of the $3,000 cost back then paid for by Harris vary today by more than one million dollars depending on who is doing the talking to what modern day audience ( This is even though the printing of the compilation was done on a printing press Harris also quietly owned and that he compelled a member of another 30+ year Palmyra family to operate for him for what ended up only bei ng about three years ) There are also critical discrepancies in what is claimed versus the printing taking 7 months... or 9 months Most of t his unpredictable, counterintuitive , 10 years of Mormonism's beginnings has been forgotten and romanticized by the goose bump giving, spine tingling, collective nostalgia of Mormonism into just a few weeks during one spring of the year 1820 . (With little more than a f ootnote writing Martin off as a dutiful , poor farmer who had the misfortune of marrying a greedy, diso bedient , problematic wife who overwhelmed him with her troubles 2) In the secon d narrative , for those jaded over simplifiers who somehow have been tricked into believing that boy was a child con - artist and worse (and by default an impossible genius and polymath too ), they also have to believe that in the year 1830 at age 24 , with all that impossible genius, knowled ge and capability flowing from his finger tips alone, Joseph Smith the man was still p laying in the dirt in front of his parent's s hack in that Smith f amily's eighth town of Palmyra, New York (population in 1830 of about 3,800) while other authors were winning awards just a few hundred miles away in New York City (population about 185,000 and growing every day . The Population of the USA's 24 states was about 12.8 million ). Those famous , highly capable authors were also getti ng their far less elaborate works published by major publishing houses ( not by a controversial, uneducated, wealthy , controlling landowner in a culturally isolated tiny town ) Those works were also being shipped all over the U.S.A's 24 eastern states and to Europe and they were making fortunes for the writers a nd their publishers in the highly competitive , highly influential writing, printing and publishing world. After all that, t he jaded oversimplifiers have to believe t hat at age 34 the impossible , poor newcomer to Palmyra , wu nderboy - turned - wunderman also single handedly facilitate d the purchase and building of a town (that will be named Nauvoo, Illinois ) , married more than two doz en wives , had a few children ( including a few sons to raise in his schemes ), had his own militia to protect his interests and then at the young age of 38, with all those dark fruits and their DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 13 unstoppable future at his fingertips , publicly announce d he was running for President of the United States then voluntarily led a group on a days long ride by horseback to hand h imself and his brother over to a violent mob that murdered them. For those jaded over simplifiers this means , that impossible poor newcomer wu nderboy - turned - wonderman and dynamically dark polymath was clever enough to do all alone what no one else had done in the history of the globe but then was still somehow too dumb to enjoy it all and not get himself murdered ( at the young age of 38 ) This , while many others including three brothers in total were murdered around him and while the powerful Palmyra landowner Martin Harris went on to far out live nearly everyone else associated with the initial beginnings of Mormonism ( to the age of 92 ) His parents also lived far longer than the parents of several other people who played roles critical to the beginnings of Mormonism (some who seemed to have died in suspicious ways.) Each of these two promi nent but counterintuitive narratives leaves anyone outside of each narrative's culture scratching their head a bit T his contributes to why as I will attempt to explain in this PDF with more conducive hidden, forgotten and known fact s than the other two narratives, beginning with the Smith family in 1816 ... all followers of Mormonism are victi ms of prevarications This is no matter what roles a follower has filled or currently fills within parts of the organization from the most visible role to the most in vi sible. All followers of Mormonism are also inspiring souls. When it comes to that innocent boy and his family , this will all start in the year 1816 when he is 10 years old. While living in Vermont, h is family will see word of workers needed for the long awaited construction of the Palmyra portion of the to - be - built 363 mile long Erie Canal Martin Harris also quietly controlled the route of the to - be - built canal in the Palmyra region . He made sure it w ould pass right by lands o wned by the Harris' and others and for this story he was responsible for the early announcements of construction in the Palmyra region. At the time the Smiths arrive in Palmyra, family f ather Joseph Smith Sr. is 45 and family m o ther Lucy Mack Smith is 41 . Their oldest son A lvin is 18, son Hyrum 16, daughter Sophronia 13 ( all born in Turnbridge, VT), son Joseph (Jr.) 10 (born in Sharon, VT), son Samuel 8 (born in Turnbridge, VT), son William 5 (born in Royalton, VT), daughter Kath arine 3 (born in Lebanon, NH) and son Don Carlos (born in Norwich, VT) is an infant Their youngest daughter Lucy is still 5 years away from being born in Palmyra Altogether, Joseph Sr. and Lucy Mack will be parents to eight children who will survive past birth out of eleven born to them . A heartache that is far too common in the pre - modern times. Waiting darlings. This opportunistic move by the wandering, treasure digging Smith family will be their 8th move between Vermont , New Hampshire and New York (and it won't be their last move.) When the Smith family arrives in Palmyra, i t will be the 10 year old boy Joseph's 5th move with the family. After arriving in Palmyra , the Smiths will be led to a shack just a mile away from the Harris' lands For this story, t his will happen upon Martin's being informed of th e Smiths arrival and his directing their use of the shack in exchange for the Smith men and boys working for the Harris' until the work cutting, clearing and digging for the Erie Canal would begin. (This is because it was normal for Martin to learn of families with sons of working age passing through Palmyra and for the Harris' hiring men and boys to work on their lands and in their many different operations as needed. Thi s also means the Harris' always had plenty of cash and coin on hand. ) DRAFT UPDATED 1.23.2023 14 The Smith's search for work on the to - be - built Erie Canal is THE reason they came to Palmyra even though many parts of Martin's Black Vine will prevaricate this and leave generations o f Newcomers to believe that the Smiths were always dutiful lifelong residents and humble farmers of Palmyra. Left out will also be any mention of the Erie Canal's constru ction or presence in Palmyra, the reciprocating bounties it will bring to Harris and the impossible to understate impact the canal had on New York City and the surrounding area becoming the global trade and financial titan it will become Upon arriving in Palmyra, Joseph's 18 year old brother Alvin will first be chosen by Harris to be the secret, but public figurehead in Harris' stolen plan to save the failing colonial U S A . A plan that Harris will hijack fro m parts of T he Greater Brotherhood and combine with a n unprecedented, deeply patriotic, written clarion call comprising the id eals and work of a sharing group of prolific statesman, authors and patriots. (Metaphorically patriotic works were also a growing literary category at the time.) Martin's initial connection to that multi - layered group will include a close, well - known , well - traveled , childhood friend turned statesman . This friend would be based in New York City but would be sent to Egypt and Turkey for a time. He is also a member of that Bradish family His name is Luther Bradish. In Martin's funnel of horrors, like an inverted, spinning carousel of madness, he will believe that Lucy Hill , the Smiths and that unpublished patriotically stirring book he will purloin from Bradish's patriotic group were led to him by a higher power. ( Like he once claimed an angel appeared t o him in the form of a deer and walked and talked with him for a mile or two.) After four years go by and by the time headstrong Alvin turns 22 however, Alvin will become too restless and too informed from others for the superficial charms of Martin's wealth and self - serving promises When Alvin resists Harris' grooming, Harris will switch from Alvin to the more naïve Joseph who is now 14 instead. This , after skipping middle brother Hyrum who will have also grown past age 18 and as
