Daily Meditation . . . the one who hears the word of the kingdom. (Matthew 13:19) What was “the word of the kingdom” that Jesus refers to in today’s Gospel passage (Matthew 13:19)? Simply this: “The kingdom of heaven is at hand” (4:17). It’s the “word” that Jesus proclaimed when he launched his public ministry. He had come to usher in God’s kingdom, and he wanted his disciples—and all of us—to help it expand and grow and bear fruit. So, let’s look at this familiar parable of the sower and the seed from the perspective of bearing fruit for God’s kingdom. Jesus doesn’t want us to be the seed that falls on the path—the people who never really understand the scope of God’s call to them. Our faith isn’t just a matter of following a set of rules. Jesus invites us to something greater: cooperating with him in making his kingdom a reality wherever we live and work. And if we think we aren’t worthy or talented enough, he wants us to recognize that those thoughts are from the evil one! Jesus also warns us not to become the seed that falls on rocky soil—those who feel overwhelmed by the hardships and sacrifices involved when we say yes to God’s call. He knows that we can persevere only when we are rooted in him and focus not just on the difficulties but also the blessings of following him. Finally, taking up Jesus’ call to bear fruit for his kingdom means making it the most important priority in our lives. He doesn’t want us to be like the seed among thorns and let other concerns distract us from his own concerns. Today at Mass, ask yourself, how is Jesus calling me to bear fruit for his kingdom? How will I respond? Remember, you’re not on your own!
