On the following pages, you will find a detailed profile of Chris, highlighting the extensive expertise he has developed over nearly 30+ years in the energy sector. Below is a concise summary of his key achievements and experience. Chris at a glance Can you provide an overview of your career in the energy sector? SPOTLIGHT SERIES: CHRIS BURNSIDE I’ve worked in the energy sector for the last 35 years in numerous technical, project management and leadership roles from exploration to late-life operations in the North Sea, North Africa, West Africa, Australia & Eastern Europe. This has included several major capital projects and high-profile E&P ventures in both small and large corporations – in most cases my focus has been on managing subsurface uncertainties and risks and integrating these with development and commercial considerations. My engineering experience is diverse, including offshore heavy-oil, light-oil, condensate, high-rate gas, mature onshore production and unconventionals. I also have extensive operations experience, having worked offshore as a drilling representative and a completions engineer early in my career. O N : Can you share an example of a project where your leadership significantly impacted the outcome? I was part of the team that discovered the Sangomar field offshore Senegal, the largest worldwide oil discovery in 2014, which recently achieved first oil (after Covid related delays). I led the appraisal and development planning phases of the project before farming-down post FID. Despite the size of the in-place resource is was difficult to establish commerciality due to the reservoir complexity and lack of infrastructure, coupled with the financial constraints of the JV. Therefore my key challenge was to navigate a path of appraising sufficient resource for a Phase 1 development, whilst defining a path for full-field development. What unique value do you bring to companies in the energy sector, particularly in a consultancy role? I have broad appreciation of the commercial, facility and operational issues from working across the E&P sector, in addition to a deep understanding of subsurface uncertainties and production challenges. I enjoy guiding teams and working collaboratively to unravel problems to find practical and workable solutions. I have a proven ability to build alignment, influence and seek win-win solutions with diverse cultures, JV Partners, NOCs and Government agencies. What is your vision for the future of the energy sector, and how do you plan to contribute to its evolution? I suspect that the energy transition may struggle to deliver on expectations due to increasing demand despite efficiency savings, so it will take some time for renewables and storage to meet peak load requirements. I hope to aid the transition by supporting good practical and strategic decisions to help fossil fuels bridge the gap, by extending production from lower carbon intensity operations. Clearly, success will require pragmatism and hard decisions to achieve this common good. weconnectenergy.com C o n n e c t T o d a y , T r a n s f o r m T o m o r r o w P e t e r B o t t o m l e y C h i e f O p e r a t i n g O f f i c e r p . b o t t o m l e y @ w e c o n n e c t e n e r g y . c o m Discuss your needs with Please reach out to Peter Bottomley to discuss your Consultancy & Advisory requirements across the energy sector.
