KABRIT ت كبري Projects www.kabrit.org • instagram.com/kabrit.961 • kabrit.prod@gmail.com • +33(0)641870613 BIO Kabrit (1994) starts painting as of 2007 in the streets of Beirut. Early on, the free and accessible aspect of graffiti encourages him to convey ideas in public spaces. In an effort of diversifying his means of visual expressions, he explores shuffling mural painting, animation filmmaking and video mapping to tackle the multiple faces of his subjects of interest. And one always finds in his work this poetry, this desire to create dialogue and to draw attention to a gaping wound or too discreet a beauty, and this propensity to bring about forgotten memories or an urge to act. RECENT PROJECTS Though continuously active since his early sprout as a graffiti writer, Kabrit has recently participated in three major projects that he considers as turning points in his artistic trajectory. These projects lay out well the various disciplines in which he engages. Amal أمل 6’ Animated Short-film Lyon/Beirut - 2019 The Page Turn 450 m2 triptych painted mural Geitawi, Lebanon - 2021 Weightless 12’ Video installation Beit Beirut Cultural Center and Urban Museum - 2022 2019 AMAL is an animated short film, half way between documentary and fiction, that tackles the subject of exile in the context of the waves of syrian emigration that took place between 2013 and 2017 to Lebanon and then to Europe. The scenario was freely adapted from several testemonials of children who fled Syria, gathered in Beirut and Lyon. Amal participated in several festivals including Forum des Images in 2019 in Centre Georges Pompidou and was awarded the first prize in both Nice Animated Flm Festival and ICTJ Wide Awake Art Contest in 2022. Synopsis : Amal is very young when her father is kidnapped as they cross the border between Syria and Lebanon. As a worker in the streets of Beirut, she spends her days waiting for news from her missing parent, hoping that her life takes a new turn. Amal reflects the circumstances of a current and universal reality, that of an uprooted youth. The project was conceived amidst the reconstruction campaings that took place in the sector neighbooring the commercial port of the city, after the devastating explosion of the 4th August 2020. In collaboration with Beit Al Baraka association, the frescos were painted at the entrance of the St. Gregoire school in Geitawi, as well as on one of the school’s playgrounds in an effort to brighten up the surroundings. The central mural represents a young student reading passionately in her book. Her posture suggests that she is taken by what she is reading and dreaming with eyes open. The side murals show close-ups of the book seen in her hands. The project’s first proposal was rejected by the respective authorities on the basis that the mood that the mural depicted was too «melancholic» and reminded the fateful event. A lighter and more joyous art direction was suggested then accepted. Alongside established artists, Kabrit was invited by curator Roy Dib to give an impression of his relationship to the city. This opportunity was used as an attempt to explore the process of personal and potentially collective grieving of childhood, of a parent, of a city, of the past (as we knew it), thus through a 12 minute semi-immersive video installation in which a montage of personal and family footage are projected panaromically on the museum’s defaced walls. The contemplative approach to the cinematography confronts documented images of familiar everyday scenes and objects to more contemporary archive, as a mean to accessing disregarded or distant memories Link to exhibition website > allobeirutexhibition.com Preliminary concept sketches Images of installation Weightless - Beit Beirut 2022 OTHER PROJECTS • Moseqa al Qamar - The Synaptik 4’ Animated music video 2021 • Romanciye Siyesiye - Michelle & Noël Keserwany 30’’ Animated sequence for music video 2020 • Homage murals for 4 th August victims Series of painted murals in Beirut/Paris 2020 - 2022 • 3D mapping shows Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2019 - 2022 Moseqa al Qamar - The Synaptik 4’ Animated music video 2021 Romanciye Siyesiye 30’’ Animated sequence for music video 2020 Homage mural for 4 th August victims Commissionned by IMA Paris (Institut du Monde Arabe) 2020 Homage mural for 4 th August victims Paris Canal St. Denis 2020
