10 Best Things for Couples to Do in Mexico Are you planning to visit Mexico City after your trip to Cabo San Lucas? Being one of the must-see destinations in the world, it’s certainly worth the trip. Mexico City offers plenty of activities and attractions for any visitor, including couples. Don’t know where to start? This guide highlights things that you and your loved one might want to try, in no particular order: 1. Visit the main square Known as Zocalo, the main square in the Centro Historico neighborhood has seasonal attractions you should not miss. In December, you will likely see an ice-skating rink and giant Christmas tree in the main square. Another highlight is the Metropolitan Cathedral, the most noticeable landmark. Admission is free, but there is a small fee to get to the rooftop. 2. Drop by Templo Mayor The Aztecs used to call Mexico City , “Tenochtitlan,’ and it was also their capital. Templo Mayor was an important religious monument for them, and back in the day, it was made up of two temples standing side by side. The structure was destroyed by the Spanish to give way to the Cathedral, but you can still visit its ruins, which are fascinating to behold. 3. See Teotihuacan The ancient city of the Aztecs is also known as the ‘City of the Gods.’ You can climb the pyramids to admire their architecture. 4. Explore Chapultepec Park This area is a green oasis that spans almost 1700 acres, housing a number of museums, including the Anthropology Museum and Chapultepec Castle. The Castle offers amazing views of Mexico City. Mexico City’s Central Park is home to the lakeside spring, which was used by the Aztecs as one of the causeways with an aqueduct to run fresh water to the city. Chapultepec is Aztec and literally means ‘Grasshopper Hill.’ The park is home to a recreational lake where you can go paddle-boating. There is also a zoo on site and vendor stalls. 5. Xochimilco This UNESCO World Heritage Site is among the last remains of Lake Texcoco. Hire a flat-bottomed boat (trajinera) and a boatman will take you on an excursion for a few hours. Rates vary depending on the route. You can choose to go by Aztec attractions, like Chinampas, artificial islands made by woven mats under the surface of the water and topped with mud from the bottom of the lake where the Aztecs grew crops. Consider packing snacks and drinks, or buy some along the way. Just be warned that some goods tend to be pricier if you buy them there. 6. Take a walk On Sundays, visit one of the city’s widest boulevards, Paseo de la Reforma, when it is closed to traffic until 2PM. It is also home to picture-worthy monuments, like the Angel of Independence. You can also visit Alameda Central for a stroll after exploring Palacio de Bellas Artes. It is one of the oldest public parks in the Americas, dating back to 1592. 7. Go shopping Various local markets are located throughout the city, where you can find many different types of products. Consider those that are safe for tourists, like La Cuidadela, which carries a lot of folk art and handicrafts. 8. Enjoy the local street food Go ahead and indulge in the street food of Mexico City. Be sure to try the tamales, freshly made potato chips, and tacos. 9. Chill in one of the cafés Visit Roma & Condesa, neighborhoods that are known for their tree-lined streets and coffee shops that serve some of the best coffees in the city. 10. Eat at Pujol Another excuse not to cook is to have a meal in Pujol, the only Michelin Star restaurant in Mexico City.
