During his childhood, he often accompanied his father, a horticulturist, to Valencia on his trips (he remembers the port and the smell of oranges). 1 9 4 1 He travels to Madrid and starts working with his uncle Alfonso. in his uncle's transport company. 1 9 5 1 His first child, Gabriel, is born and buys a Capta camera for ninety pesetas to take pictures of him as he grows up. This is the beginning of his love for photography. Angeles, Antonio and Alfonso will be born a short distance away. 1 9 5 6 He joins the Royal Photographic Society of Madrid (RSF). One year later, he joins the Afal group. 1 9 5 7 He puts together a group exhibition in a bookstore, with Paco Gómez, Rafael Romero and José Aguilar. This exhibition will later be considered to be the first Spanish photographic renewal exhibition. 1 9 5 9 One of his pictures (Ramón Masats Wedding) is awarded by the North American magazine Popular Photography. Him and the Afal group exhibit their works in Spain and other countries (Pescara Biennial, Italy; library of the Spanish embassy, Paris; as well as London, Munich and Moscow). Cantero, Gómez, Masats, Ontañón, Cualladó and Camín constitute the group La Palangana (alluding to a photo of Ontañón with the portraits of the six photographers revealing themselves in a basin). Born in 1925, Gabriel Cualladó is considered one of the most outstanding representatives of the movement of the renovation of Spanish photography of the second half of the 20th century. Among the most outstanding features of his work is the humanist and poetry-laden look with which he portrayed the gray reality of post-war Spanish society. G A B R I E L C U A L L A D O プ レ ス キ ッ ト 1 9 6 1 After his participation in the Portrait Salon, his "The Girl with the Rose" photograph, enters the collection of the Département des Estampes et de la Photographie de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BnF). He is awarded with the Luis Navarro Photography Trophy from Vanguardia Barcelona. He assiduously collects books and magazines from abroad (Life, Look, Paris Match, Vogue ...), drawing on critical, historical or monographic articles, which he shares with his friends. 1 9 6 2 His work is exhibited at the Fodor museum in Amsterdam and at the Mostra Internazionale Circolo La Gondola in Venice. He is awarded with the Gold Medal and the Best Portrait Award from the Sandnes International Photography Salon (Norway). From that year on, the English Photography Year Book will regularly publish his work. In the autumn of that year the French Tourism Council commissions him, along with other Spanish photographers, to produce a photo-reportage of Paris. His work was not to the Council's liking, who judged it to be too controversial. Those photographs consisted, namely, in "La rue de la Paix", "Les Halles" and "La Place du Tertre". 1 9 6 3 His work is exhbited in the "Salon de la Imagen" in Barcelona. A couple of lonths after, he was also invited to participate in Sonimag, along with twenty-five other Spanish photographers. This is the year when he also participated in the World Exhibition of Photography sponsored by Stern magazine, accross European galleries and museums. 1 9 6 6 The year of the a great "Interpress-Photo" exhibition in Moscow, which hosted the work of two thousand selected photographers from around the world. 1 9 7 8 His work is presented at the "Rencontres Internationales de Photographie" in Arles, France, alongside other Spanish photographers. 1 9 8 0 He is selected to feature with his photos in "The Complete Book of Photographers" (Mac Millan, Los Angeles), as well as in "Contemporary Photographers" (St. James Press London) 1 9 8 2 1 9 8 8 The public discovers his work through a series of exhibitions : International Center of Photography and Galleria Spectrum Canon, during the Photographic Spring of Barcelona ; Bilbao Museum ; Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid ; Spectrum of Girona and Center Fotogr á fic Visor of Valencia. In those first years of the decade, he accompanied the rise of the recently inaugurated Forum Gallery in Tarragona, in charge of David Balsells and Chantal Grande. He joined the list of photographers of the Forum Gallery (Tarragona). He exhibits in Vinck (Gij ó n), in the Circulo de Bellas Artes (Madrid). The Département des Estampes et de la Photographie de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BnF) acquires seventeen of his works. He participates in the International Symposium of the Florida and O hio U niversities. He participates in the Photographic Days of Valencia and in Photographie Créative during the "Mois de la Photographie" de Paris. Photography has always been surrounded by the mystery of simplicity. The grasping simplicity of Walker Evans of André Kertesz of Manuel Álvarez of Gabriel Cualladó. Jean Claude Lemagny G A B R I E L C U A L L A D O プ レ ス キ ッ ト 1 9 8 8 1 9 9 2 At that point, Cualladó's work is starting to be recognized at an international level and he is invited to exhibit his work at many majort events, both in Spain and abroad. The greatest consecration of it will undoubtedly be the great exhibition organized by the IVAM (Valencian Institute of Modern Art). The National Museum of Photography Film & Television (Bradford) R.U. awards him with the ICI award for best European photographer among 30 selected photographers. 1 9 9 3 Commissioned by the museum itself, he produces a museum themed photographic work at the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum in Madrid "Points of View". 1 9 9 4 The Spanish Ministry of Culture awards him the first of the "National Photography Prize". 1 9 9 5 He exhibits part of his work and his collection in Montpellier, France. 1 9 9 8 He is awarded with the 1st Gold Medal from the Circulo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. 2 0 0 2 The Valencia Provincial Council grants him the "Alfons Roig" Prize for his artistic career. 2 0 0 3 On May 30, he dies in Madrid, at the age of 78. 2 0 0 3 2 0 2 1 Several major museums pay tribute to his work by organizing both individual and collective exhibitions. Namely the Museum Reina Sofia, Madrid ; L a Pedrera, Barcelona, the IVAM, Valencia, as well as several others. A series of exhibitions are set to be prepared on the occasion of the 2 0th anniversary of his death. An opportunity to confront our modern societies with the ones that Cuallado photographed in his time. How have we changed since then ? W hat would he photograph today if he were to be alive ?
