YL | FUTURE STAFF Hope: Volunteers will walk away with a more accurate understanding of what to think through before considering the call to Young Life staff. “We have all experienced times of exaltation on the mountain, when we have seen things from God’s perspective and have wanted to stay there. But God will never allow us to stay there. The true test of our spiritual life is in exhibiting the power to descend from the mountain. If we only have the power to go up, something is wrong. It is a wonderful thing to be on the mountain with God, but a person only gets there so that he may later go down and lift up the demon-possessed people in the valley (see Mark 9:14-18). We are not made for the mountains, for sunrises, or for the other beautiful attractions in life— those are simply intended to be moments of inspiration. We are made for the valley and the ordinary things of life, and that is where we have to prove our stamina and strength. Yet our spiritual selfishness always wants repeated moments on the mountain. We feel that we could talk and live like perfect angels, if we could only stay on the mountaintop. Those times of exaltation are exceptional and they have their meaning in our life with God, but we must beware to prevent our spiritual selfishness from wanting to make them the only time. We are inclined to think that everything that happens is to be turned into useful teaching. In actual fact, it is to be turned into something even better than teaching, namely, character. The mountaintop is not meant to teach us anything, it is meant to make us something. There is a terrible trap in always asking, “What’s the use of this experience?” We can never measure spiritual matters in that way. The moments on the mountaintop are rare moments, and they are meant for something in God’s purpose.” Oswald Chambers-My Utmost For His Highest What does this quote mean?: What volunteer leaders mostly see are the “mountaintop” experiences of Young Life staff, mainly time with kids and leaders. A lot of behind the scenes work is in the “valley” helping set up the volunteers to be with kids. Ask Yourself... -Is Jesus first? Is my identity in Jesus? -What is God doing in my life? Do you feel like the Lord is guiding you toward Young Life staff? Do you have other people in your life pointing out strengths that correlate with Young Life staff? -Do I want to do something else? Pursue the other job. If you still feel as if God is pulling you back to Young Life great. You can learn a lot in a non-ministry role. -Am I running from something? Is my current situation pretty tough? Is Young Life a way out of that tough situation? Ask Your Staff Person... 1. Am I a learner? Are you a person who is constantly wanting to learn and grow as a person? A reader? A student of others and a thirst for knowledge? Are you teachable and humble under the authority of another? Are you asking for feedback and can you receive it? Are you willing to fail and learn from the experience? 2. Do I have high energy? This is not someone who is just throwing shaving cream at another. This could be an introvert or an extrovert, a whatever on the enneagram. Are you able to rally people around a cause? Can you cast a vision? Do you have a missional mindset? Can you juggle multiple things at one time? 3. Do I have capacity for more? (Area Director) Do you have the dedication and excitement to grow in your Young Life career? Are you willing to step into uncomfortable situations and lead? 4. Do I have high character? Are you someone who people would say has character and integrity? Are you willing to grow in those areas? Next Steps: -Take a look at the “Ask Yourself” questions and take some time to be really honest with yourself. -If you would be going on staff within the next year, set up some time with your staff person to specifically talk about the “Ask Your Staff Person” questions.
