Difficult Harry Potter Logic Puzzle Walkthrough Step 1: Dean Thomas, B6 Sirius tells us a Gryffindor artist is in B6. Dean is mentioned a number of times as a talented artist. Step 2: Kingsley Shacklebolt, A6 Sirius lets us know that all the corners are order memebers and Dean adds that a minister of magic is to his left. Kingsley is the only known minister of magic who was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Kingsley is therefore in A6. Step 3: Ron Weasley, B1 Kingsley says that Ron is adjacent to the man who gifted him his owl; aka Sirius. Sirius’s clue tells us that Row 2 has no quidditch players. That just leaves B1 as the remaining spot adjacent to Sirius. Step 4: Harry Potter, D4 This is a multi-step process. We know Harry’s not in row 2, because he plays quidditch. Dean told us that Harry is adjacent to 8 people, which rules out all the perimeter squares, and that they must all be students. Kingsley’s clue, telling us that there’s a professor in B4 and F4 further narrows down our search, ruling out the remaining spots in Columns B,C, and E. All that’s left is D3,D4, and D5. Ron tells us he is only diagonal to women, ruling out D3. Ron also tells us that D5 is older than him. Since Harry is younger than him, Harry must be in D4. Step 5: Oliver Wood, E3 Harry tells us there’s a profession quidditch player in E3. The only professional quidditch player we know who went to Hogwarts with Harry is Oliver Wood. Step 6: Fleur Delacour, A4 Oliver Wood tells us that Fleur is in Row 4. We know B4 and F4 are professors. And we know that C4 and E4, adjacent to Harry, must have gone to school with Harry. That leaves us with A4. Step 7: Cormac McLaggen, D1 Fleur tells us that the student who hunts nogtails with his uncle is not adjacent to Harry. This refers to Cormac McLaggen. We know Cormac has to be in Column D based on Harry’s 2 nd clue which states that anyone in the quiz who attended the 1 st Slug Club meeting is in Column D. Fleur’s clue tells us he is not in D5 (or D3, which additionally, must be female). Dean’s second clue tells us that D6 is in his year, ruling out that square. And we know that Row 2 has no quidditch players. Since Cormac played a quidditch game, he cannot be in D2. This leaves us with D1. Step 8: Ginny Weasley, D3, Arthur Weasley, E1 Cormac tells us Ginny is in the puzzle. We know she must be in Column D (Slug Club meeting). She cannot be in D2 since she’s a Quidditch player. She cannot be in D5 since she’s younger than Ron. And she cannot be in D6 since she’s not in Dean’s year. D3 it is! Now, Cormac also tells us that his Slughorn party date is adjacent to him and so is her future father-in-law. This is referring to Hermione and Arthur Weasley. Oliver Wood told us that no two Weasley’s are adjacent to each other. Once Ginny’s been placed in D3, Arthur cannot be in C2,D2, or E2. Additionally, he cannot be in C1, adjacent to Ron. This leaves him in E1. Step 9: Gilderoy Lockhart, E6, Roger Davies, E5 Arthur tells us the man who tried to obliviate his youngest son is in Column E. This is referring to Gilderoy Lockhart, who cannot be in E4, or E5 since he is not a student. He also cannot be in E2 since he mentions to Harry that he played quidditch (whether or not this is a lie is another story…). This puts him in E6. Ginny’s clue tells us that the only person known to have snogged in Madam Puddifoot’s is in Column E. This snogger extraordinaire can only be Roger Davies. We know he isn’t in E2 since he’s the Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain, and we know he can’t be in E4, diagonal to Ron, since he is male. Therefore he must be in E5. Step 10: Severus Snape, F6, Bill Weasley, B5 Professor Lockhart tells us that his dueling “assisstant” is adjacent to him. This, of course, is referring to the sporting Professor Snape. Snape can’t be in D6 since that’s reserved for someone in Dean’s year. He can’t be in D5, adjacent to Harry, since he’s not a student. And he can’t be in F5, which is diagonal to Ron, because he is not female. Hence, he is in F6. Now, we know based on Arthur’s clue that Bill Weasley is in Column B. He cannot be in B2, adjacent to Ron, and he cannot be in B4 which is occupied by a professor. This leaves us with B3 (he was at the World Cup) or B5. Roger Davies tells us that Mad Eye shares a diagonal with Bill. If Bill is in B3, MadEye would have to be placed in one of: A2, C2, C4, or D5. A2 and C2 are diagonal to Ron and C4 and D5 are adjacent to Harry. This makes it impossible for Bill to be in B3. He must be in B5. Step 11: Mad-Eye Moody, F1, Luna Lovegood, E4 We know Moody is diagonal to Bill. He cannot be in C4, adjacent to Harry and he cannot be in C6 since C6-F3 were at Bill and Fleur’s wedding (if you consider him a professor Column C is also ruled out that way). This leaves us with E2 and F1. Bill tells us that Row 2 alternates genders. Since we know that A2 is female (Ron’s clue) we have the genders for the rest of the row mapped out. Moody cannot be in E2 which must be female, placing him in F1. We know the C6-F3 diagonal must all have attended Bill’s wedding. We also know that D5 and E4 are Hogwarts students from Harry’s time. The only people fitting this criteria are Harry, Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, Ginny, Luna, and Lee Jordan. We know E4 must be female. Since Ginny has already been placed and Hermione must be adjacent to Cormac, the only person who can be in E4 is Luna. Step 12: Fred Weasley F3, George Weasley D5 Lockhart told us that both twins are in the puzzle. If we remove any spot adjacent to another Weasley, we’re left with A3, B3, D5, D6, F3, F4, and F5. Now, F4 is a professor, F5 must be female, and D6 must be in Dean’s year. When we add Luna’s clue stating that A3 and B3 are not Weasleys, we’re left with D5 and F3. Moody’s clue tells us that the rest of Column F was killed/injured during the battle of Hogwarts. Therefore Fred is in F3 and George in D5. Step 13: Lavender Brown, F5, Ludo Bagman, B3 Fred tells us that Ron’s first kiss, the lovely Lav-Lav, is in Column F. Since F2 must be male (Bill’s alternating gender clue) and F4 is a professor, Lavender must be in F5. George tells us that the man who owes Fred and him money is in Column B. This is referring to the notorious gambler, Ludo Bagman. Bagman cannot be in B4, where a professor must be housed, and he played quidditch for the Wimbourne Wasps, ruling out B2 (Row 2 has no quidditch players). B3 it is! Step 14: Katie Bell, C5, Angelina Johnson, C1 Ludo Bagman let’s us know that he’s diagonally adjacent only to three women. One of these is Fleur. We know that A2 and C2 are also female, being diagonal to Ron. This means that C4 is male. Snape tells us that George (the boy whose ear he took off) is adjacent to Katie Bell (the girl cursed by Draco’s necklace). Katie cannot be in C6 (not at Bill and Fleur’s wedding) or D6 (not in Dean’s year). Nor, we’ve established can she be in C4. This means she’s in C5. Fred tells us that Angelina Johnson, Fred’s yule ball date, is in Column C. She cannot be in C4 or C6 for the same reasons as Katie. She cannot be in C2 since she’s a quidditch player, and she can’t be in C3 since she didn’t attend the Quidditch World Cup. This places her in C1. Step 15: Hermione Granger, E2, Horace Slughorn, B4, Dolores Umbridge, A2 Hermione must be adjacent to Cormac. Angelina tells us Hermione’s not below her, in C2, and she cannot be in D2 which must be male. This puts Hermione in E2. Angelina tells us that B4 is from after her time at Hogwarts which means B4 taught in the 6 th or 7th book. When you factor in Katie’s clue, telling us that there are no Death Eaters in the puzzle, the only person B4 can be is Horace Slughorn. Fred let us know that Mundungus is adjacent to the woman who stole his locket, Dolores Umbridge. Umbridge cannot be in Column C since she’s a professor. She’s not in Column F (didn’t fight in the battle of Hogwarts and no adjacent squares). She’s not in D2 or B2 (they must be male). She’s not in D6 (Dean’s year, no adjacent squares). She’s not in A3 (didn’t attend World Cup). And she’s not in A5 (no adjacent squares). Thus, we can place her in A2. Step 16: Victor Krum, C6 Hermione tells us that Victor Krum is not in Column A. We know he can’t be in Row 2 due to his quidditch prowess. He’s obviously not in F4 (professor, battle of Hogwarts), nor is he adjacent to Harry in C3 or C4. Since D6 is in Dean’s year, we can place Victor Krum in C6. Step 17: Mundungus Fletcher, B2, Lee Jordan, D2 Umbridge tells us the twins’ best friend, Lee Jordan, is in her row. If we go back to Lavender’s clue, we know that Seamus Finnigan and Ernie Mcmillan must share a row. Now, really we can figure things out just with this clue but I can’t be sure that none of these three weren’t injured during the Battle of Hogwarts in some way (which would bring F2 back into play) so I added Katie’s clue which tells us that F2 is a professor. Now, with F2 off the table, C2 being female, and B2, or D2, housing Lee Jordan, there is only one available spot in Row 2. This means Ernie and Seamus must be in Row 3 (they can’t be in Row 4 because F4 is a professor). This allows us to place Mundungus Fletcher, who must be near Umbridge, in B2. With Mundungus in B2, Lee Jordan must be in D2, since C2 is female and F2 is a professor. Step 18: Neville Longbottom, D6, Parvati Patil, C2, Tonks, A5 Lee Jordan tells us that Neville is in the puzzle. He must be in D6 because he attended the first Slug Club meeting and must be in Column D. Lavender told us that her best friend, Parvati Patil, is not in Column A. We know she’s not in F2 or F4, and she can’t either be in C4 which must be male. (A3 and C3 are reserved for Seamus and Ernie, and she wasn’t at the World Cup as far as we know). Parvati must be placed in C2. Mundungus tells us that Hagrid’s the only protector of the 7 Potters who isn’t in the puzzle. We’ve already placed Moody, Kingsley, Arthur, and Bill. Tonks and Lupin remain. Tonk’s cannot be in Column F since both are Hogwarts professors. Nor can she be in C4 (adjacent to Harry, male). The only square left for Nymphadora is A5. Step 19: Zacharias Smith, C4, Ernie McMillan, A3, Seamus Finnigan, C3 Neville tells us that there’s another Hogwarts commentator in the puzzle. This can only be referring to Zacharias Smith. And Zacharias Smith can only be in C4. Tonks tells us that Hufflepuffs are not adjacent. This allows us to place Ernie in A3 and Seamus in C3. Step 20: Firenze, F4, Remus Lupin, F2 We know Firenze is in this puzzle based on Parvati’s clue. Seamus tells us that Umbridge doesn’t share a row with the race she greatly fears. Umbridge may hate werewolves, giants, and all half-breeds, but what she fears are centaurs. This places Firenze in F4 and Lupin in F2. Thanks for Playing and Happy Puzzling!
