Alley Theatre presents Welcome to Judith Fair! We are so excited for you to join us as we (cautiously) return to live performance. Tonight, we are showcasing 10 acts from an incredible line-up of womxn and non-binary performers, with a wide variety of artistry and electric creativity to share with you. The personal remains political; while we did not set a theme for tonight's show, most of the artists are responding to present reality with a piece of themselves in resistance. The cover image of succulents echoes for us the qualities of endurance under harsh conditions, independence, and adaptable resilience — much like the works that you will see tonight. We hope that throughout the night, you will find something in their voices that will stay with you long after the show ends. Please support our artists by following them on social media, and donating to our event. All profits and donations will be split amongst the participating artists, and every bit of support goes a long way in helping the performing arts industry get back on its feet. Stay safe, and enjoy the fresh evening air. Jess Amy Shead & Krys Yuan Co-Curators We respectfully acknowledge that Judith Fair takes place on the unceded and occupied territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She practices Conflict Theatre @ UBC, and she is a Jessie award-winning director. Alex Masse is a writer and musician from BC. Her poetry and prose each received a Scholastic Gold Key in 2018, and she's been performing in the local arts scene since 2012, this year featuring in multiple local festivals. Alex is a neurodivergent lesbian, and finds this greatly affects her work. When not creating, she's probably reading or thrifting. CHEEN (Cherine Amr) is an Egyptian guitarist, singer and songwriter. She was born in Alexandria, Egypt and started singing at the age of 6. When she was 18, she got interested in rock and metal music which motivated her to learn the guitar. At the age of 19, she started writing her own songs and formed the first female metal band in Egypt, Massive Scar Era. After dinner… After dinner The jokes and laughter get better. Oh sweety, do you remember the Moon Valley? You got upset for no reason! Forget what has passed, and come and sleepover at my place. I'm going to wait for you on Tuesday night after dinner. You will find everything in place. I will set up the mood for us and fulfill your desires. And I'll sit with you alone, don't be so shy. Don't dare to distract me while we are in the middle of having fun, and you start touching me. I know your hands like to tickle me. (Translated by Cherine Amr) Bella Dé Colletage has been dancing burlesque since 2015, performing across BC and in New York at the New York International Nerdlesque Festival. An interdisciplinary artist, Bella is always thrilled to connect the worlds of opera, theatre, music, dance and physical storytelling (and loves a good shimmy in sequins). Isla Lesbos is a director, actor, and theatre maker who has recently graduated from Simon Fraser University's School of Contemporary Art. She aims to explore themes of queerness, intersectional politics, and radical empathy. Ragini's cultural identity and professional paths have taken many turns. Although she has always identified as Canadian, she was conceived in Fiji, and popped out on a trip to India. From the age of one, she's lived in BC, with short stints in London, St. Louis, and Mumbai. She has been an educator for many years. Her latest love is her granddaughter, and she can't wait to have more (no pressure on her kids... none at all! Really.) Caroline is bilingual in ASL (American Sign Language), and LSQ (Langue des Signes Québécoise). In addition, Caroline has a base knowledge of Indigenous Sign Language. In 2005, Caroline moved to Vancouver BC & took a 10 year hiatus from theatre. Caroline decide to return to the Theatre after the Honorable Stephen Lytton - a formidable Indigenous Leader. Mr. Lytton invited Caroline to use a team approach & this resulted in Caroline joining Theatre Terrific. Caroline's goals include educating & bringing awareness to what the every day life of a Deaf Actor looks like. She also wants to educate on how to approach Deaf people to communicate with them. Caroline hopes to continue to break down the barriers in the Theatre and Film worlds as well."
