In Schulbüchern spiegelt sich das Selbstverständnis von Gesellschaften wider: Durch sie ist der Werte-, Themen- und Literaturkanon rekonstruierbar, der zu einem gewissen Zeitpunkt in einer Gesellschaft dominant ist. Ab der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts werden durch Schrift und Schule auch nationale Identitätskonzepte konsolidiert. Diese Fallstudie zeigt für slowenische Schullesebücher, welchen großen Beitrag Übersetzungen dabei leisteten, zeichnet ihre Entstehungsumstände und die Leistungen der Beteiligten nach und richtet das Augenmerk auf die Verfestigung einer einheitlichen slowenischen Schriftsprache und einer nationalen Gruppenidentität, wie sie durch das Schullesebuch vorangetrieben und in diesem sichtbar wurde.This book is made open access as part of the Knowledge Unlatched KU Open Services

Water-Energy-Food Nexus in Large Asian River Basins

The connections between water, food and energy are currently being discussed more than ever before, thanks to the recently emerged concept of the water–energy–food security nexus. Various organizations and authors have defined and addressed the concept from their own view points: nexus is, indeed in the air.This Special Issue looks at the water–energy–food security nexus in the context of large Asian river basins, with a focus on transboundary rivers shared by several countries. The articles included in the Special Issue analyse what benefits the nexus approach could bring to these kinds of, often quite demanding, settings. And where are the potential pitfalls that call for further development.The thematic areas covered in the Special Issue thus include water resources management; energy planning and policies with an emphasis on hydropower; and food production systems, including fisheries, irrigation and cropland management. Due to its focus on transboundary contexts, the articles also look at the geopolitical, international cooperation and security aspects related to the nexus.The articles of the Special Issue include case studies from relevant transboundary river basins, with a focus on the Mekong River Basin in Southeast Asia as well as the river basins in Central Asia. Articles also include a comparative analysis in several large Asian river basins as well as more theoretical discussions of the water–energy–food security nexus and its linkages to other framings and approaches, such as IWRM and sustainable development.

This is the first English translation of a pivotal work in the history of religious tolerance. In Synod on the Freedom of Conscience (1582) the Dutch humanist Dirck Volckertszoon Coornhert (1522-1590) provides one of the first book-length pleas for religious freedom published in the West. His central concern in his writings and exchanges with ministers of the Reformed Church was the safeguarding of freedom of conscience, the chief cause, he believed, for which the struggle against Habsburg Spain was being waged. The imaginary Synod, held in "Freetown," gathers together chief Catholic and Protestant leaders and theologians who engage in spirited debates on such matters as religious diversity, the freedom to criticize, the norms used to determine what constitutes heresy, freedom of the press, and the role of the state in the suppression of heresy. Each session concludes with remarks by the irenic Gamaliel (Coornhert's alter ego), who shows that both parties sin equally on the side of intolerance and pleads for the tolerant alternative. In this work Coornhert continues an Erasmian theme which would be picked up again in the following century by the Remonstrants and Hugo Grotius.In deze Engelse vertaling van Synode over de gewetensvrijheid voert Coornhert een fictief debat met vertegenwoordigers uit de verschillende religieuze kampen die hij soms letterlijk citeert (o.a. Beza, Calvijn, Du Plessis-Mornay en Bullinger). Synod on the Freedom of Conscience is niet alleen een belangrijk tijdsdocument; door Coornherts doelstelling - bevordering van de religievrede - en zijn rijkdom aan argumenten kunnen we in het huidige tolerantiedebat zeker ons voordeel doen met de lessen van deze Hollandse meester.
