Apart from financing retirement provision, assistance and care for elderly people ist he central issue in Swiss politics concerning elderly people. While medical care has been in focus of the discourse about health and social politics for a while, the issue of care work was often only touched upon. This book discusses legal issues concerning medical care and care work, describes the involved actors, the education, the recruitment and the wages of employees. Furthermore, self-sustained and health promoting living at a high age is an issue. It becomes evident that care work is neither legally defined nor with regards to content. Legal regulations securing quality standards, legal stability for employees as well as the integration of care work into the system of social security, are lacking in practice. In view of these conditions and changes and society, this book shows that the issue of care work needs more consideration in the political discourse concerning elderly people.

En l'espace de quinze ans, la fédération européenne de partis qui rassemblait les formations démocrates chrétiennes – le parti populaire européen (PPE) – a vécu une mutation politique, idéologique et organisationnelle fondamentale. Centré à l'origine sur les formations démocrates chrétiennes, le PPE s'est ouvert à des partis aux sensibilités conservatrice voire libérale ou nationaliste dans les pays de l'Union européenne et dans les États qui sont amenés à la rejoindre sous peu. L'objectif de ce livre est d'examiner cette problématique à l'aune des mutations de la démocratie chrétienne et des partis démocrates chrétiens, d'une part, à celle du conservatisme et des partis conservateurs, de l'autre. A-t-on affaire à une simple opération de stratégie politique configurée au système politique européen ? Est-ce le reflet d'une indistinction de plus en plus manifeste entre démocrates chrétiens et conservateurs ? Ou, de manière plus radicale, assiste-t-on à l'extinction d'une famille politique – la démocrate chrétienne – ou à son absorption par la famille conservatrice ? Despite all attempts by many governments in the world to ascribe to the Holy Grail of ‘sustainable development’, Ecosystem Earth is confronted with a gargantuan sustainability crisis. The West has seduced the rest of the world to copy its highly attractive, albeit unsustainable development paradigm. In a finite world the eco-impact of the global consumer class cannot be extrapolated to all human beings. The ecological crisis and the global justice issue are linked to each other as Siamese twins. Part 1 of Terra Incognita presents an environmental and economic analysis of the ecological crisis. Using the pre-analytical viewpoint of ecological economics, the authors develop a conceptual framework in which ecology and global justice are united in one vision. To unravel the roots of the contemporary crisis the authors describe in Part 2 the ecological history of the human-nature interaction. Based on an interdisciplinary approach they discuss the three historical lifestyles: those of the hunter-gatherers, the agrarian society and the industrial era. Finally, in Part 3 the authors explore potential systemic solutions, which need to keep or make the world livable. This innovative book is supported by the stimulating belief that the human future remains principally open and can still be influenced by each of us.

In the mid-19th century, letters to newspapers in Finland began to condemn a practice known as home thievery, in which farm mistresses pilfered goods from their farms to sell behind the farm master’s back. Why did farm mistresses engage home thievery and why were writers so harsh in their disapproval of it? Why did many men in their letters nonetheless sympathize with women’s pilfering? What opinions did farm daughters express?This book explores theoretical concepts of agency and power applied to the 19th-century context and takes a closer look at the family patriarch, resistance to patriarchal power by farm mistresses and their daughters, and the identities of those Finnish men who already in the 1850s and 1860s sought to defend the rights of rural farm women.This book is part of the Studia Fennica Ethnologica series.
