Ernest Bramah (1868-1942) was an English author of considerable repute in his day. In total Bramah published 21 books and numerous short stories and features. His humorous works were ranked with Jerome K Jerome, and W. W. Jacobs; his detective stories with Conan Doyle; his politico-science fiction with H. G. Wells and his supernatural stories with Algernon Blackwood. George Orwell acknowledged that Bramah's book What Might Have Been (1907) influenced his seminal Nineteen Eighty-Four (1948). Bramah, the creator of the immortal Kai Lung and Max Carrados, was a recluse who refused to allow his public even the slightest glimpse of his private life - secrecy perhaps only matched by E. W. Hornung, the creator of Raffles, and today, J.D. Salinger. We now know that Bramah, whose real name was Smith, was a man of erudition and prescience with a unique style of writing that has never been copied. Among his most famous works are: Four Max Carrados Detective Stories (1914), Kai Lung's Golden Hours (1922), The Mirror of Kong Ho (1905) and The Wallet of Kai Lung (1900).

In recent years, heavy metals have been widely used in agricultural, chemical, domestic, and technological applications, causing environmental and soil contaminations. Heavy metals enter the plant system through soil or via the atmosphere, and can accumulate, affecting physiological processes, plant growth, yield, and human health if heavy metals are stored in edible tissues. Understanding the regulation mechanisms of plant heavy metals accumulation and partitioning is important to improve the safety of the food chain. In this Special Issue book, a total of 19 articles were included; four reviews covering phytoremediation, manganese phytotoxicity in plants, the effect of cadmium on plant development, the genetic characteristics of Cd accumulation, and the research status of genes and QTLs in rice, respectively, as well as fifteen original research articles, mainly regarding the impact of cadmium on plants. Cadmium was therefore the predominant topic of this Special Issue, increasing the attention of the research community on the negative impacts determined by cadmium or cadmium associated with other heavy metals. The articles have highlighted a great genetic variability, suggesting different possibilities for accumulation, translocation and the reduction or control of heavy metal toxicity in plants.

Disability Human Rights Law is an emerging field. It is an amalgamation of human rights law, disability studies, and disability rights law. It views rights in a novel way, opening a new line of scholarly inquiry. It sees rights as they apply to the individual, with regard to the individual’s particular abilities, needs, and circumstances.Disability Human Rights Law represents a shift in the field of human rights. The traditional, and often archaic, rights boundaries are broken down. Civil and political rights exist entwined with social, economic, and cultural rights. The rights of the community and the rights of the individual are not always distinguishable and are often dependent upon one another. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is the epitome of this shift and the epicenter of a new wave of rights protection.This book focuses on this new field. This book sheds light on the integration processes and identity patterns of Angolan, Brazilian and Eastern European communities in Portugal. It examines the privileged position that immigrant organisations hold as interlocutors between the communities they represent and various social service mechanisms operating at national and local levels. Through the collection of ethnographic data and the realisation of 110 interviews with community insiders and middlemen, culled over a year's time, João Sardinha provides insight into how the three groups are perceived by their respective associations and representatives. Following up on the rich data is a discussion of strategies of coping with integration and identity in the host society and reflections on Portuguese social and community services and institutions.João Sardinha analyseert de integratieprocessen en identiteitspatronen van de Angolese, Braziliaanse en Oost-Europese gemeenschappen in Portugal, gezien vanuit deze bevolkingsgroepen. London’s Urban Landscape is the first major study of a global city to adopt a materialist perspective and stress the significance of place and the built environment to the urban landscape. Edited by Christopher Tilley, the volume is inspired by phenomenological thinking and presents fine-grained ethnographies of the practices of everyday life in London. In doing so, it charts a unique perspective on the city that integrates ethnographies of daily life with an analysis of material culture.
The first part of the volume considers the residential sphere of urban life, discussing in detailed case studies ordinary residential streets, housing estates, suburbia and London’s mobile ‘linear village’ of houseboats. The second part analyses the public sphere, including ethnographies of markets, a park, the social rhythms of a taxi rank, and graffiti and street art.

This book contains a study on fictional, imitated language. In detailed analyses it shows how Jewish figures were characterized through their language in German fiction (18th until early 20th century). It discloses which structures of this fictional language originate from the Yiddish language and which are reflexes of (the author's) orality. At the same time the study contains a comprehensive description of Western Yiddish and its grammatical structures, which are compared with German and Eastern Yiddish varieties.Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Strukturen fiktionaler, imitierender Sprache. Am Beispiel detaillierter Analysen der sprachlichen Charakterisierung jüdischer Figuren der deutschsprachigen Literatur des 18., 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts legt die Arbeit offen, welche Strukturen die jiddische Sprachrealität widerspiegeln und welche als Reflexe der (zumeist autoreigenen) Mündlichkeit gelten können. Zugleich stellt die Untersuchung eine umfangreiche grammatische Darstellung des im deutschsprachigen Raum bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert hinein verbreiteten Westjiddischen dar, dessen Strukturen sie mit denen deutscher und ostjiddischer Varietäten vergleicht.
