"Prison has always been an attractive object for study in the field of sociology. Few other areas of modern society demonstrate social reality’s fundamental ideas so clearly and obviously than prison. Social deviance and stigma, ostracism and integration, control and discipline, power and inequality are all examples of key sociological concepts that are crystalized in daily life in a prison environment.

Fengslende sosiologi. Makt, straff og identitet i Trondheims fengsler (Captivating Sociology. Power, Punishment and Identity in Trondheim’s Prisons) presents twelve scholarly, peer-reviewed chapters that explore various aspects of prison as a social phenomenon, both as a part of and an expression of society.

The majority of the contributions build on empirical studies at maximum and minimum-security prisons in Trondheim, but the analyses have a broader relevance – both empirically and theoretically – for our understanding of power, punishment and identity in Norwegian penal institutions. Most of the contributors are associated with the Department of Sociology and Political Science at NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and the department’s project ‘Fengslende sosiologi’ (‘Captivating Sociology’). Several of the texts are by former master’s students in sociology and present further analyses based on their master’s projects.

This anthology will be of interest to scholars and practitioners in the field as well as students and others interested in prison as a social institution and penal institutions in general."

What should a university be? How can universities make a sounder and more lasting contribution to better lives and better societies in a globalised world? From a Swedish perspective, this new book challenges current ideas about what higher education is for. It presents fifteen principles for future development that range from a discussion of the nature of knowledge to the responsibility of the university in the development of society. Universities must become better at allowing and encouraging students to develop independence of thought and action through self-formation, bildung, and personal growth rather than merely preparing them for a specific job, the books says, using a historical perspective to consider these issues. De mste ocks se till att studenter fr utveckla styrka och sjlvstndighet i tanke och handling genom en tydligare fokus p bildning och personlig vxt och inte bara frbereda dem fr de frsta ren i ett framtida jobb. Framtidens samhlle kommer att krva att alla medborgare fr tillgng till hgre utbildning, rtt utformad, terkommande genom hela livet.

Non-equilibrium plasma (or low-temperature plasma, LTP) offers a chemically rich medium without the need for high power and elevated temperatures. This unique characteristic has made LTP very useful for various industrial and biomedical applications where thermal effects are not desirable. In addition, the relative simplicity of the design of sources capable of generating non-equilibrium plasma at atmospheric pressure makes LTP a very attractive technology that can accomplish the same or better results than much more complex and expensive approaches. This book describes various low-temperature plasma sources and some of their environmental and biomedical applications. The plasma sources covered in this book include low-temperature plasma jets which are novel devices that can launch low-power, low-temperature plasma plumes in ambient air. These plasma plumes can accurately and reliably be aimed at a surface to be treated or at a biological target such as cells and tissues. The application of these plasma jets in medicine, including in cancer therapy, are thoroughly discussed in this book. The contents of this book will appeal to engineers, medical experts, academics, and students who work with plasma technology.
