Recent developments in computer technology are providing historians with new ways to see—and seek to hear, touch, or smell—traces of the past. Place-based augmented reality applications are an increasingly common feature at heritage sites and museums, allowing historians to create immersive, multifaceted learning experiences. Now that computer vision can be directed at the past, research involving thousands of images can recreate lost or destroyed objects or environments, and discern patterns in vast datasets that could not be perceived by the naked eye. Seeing the Past with Computers is a collection of twelve thought-pieces on the current and potential uses of augmented reality and computer vision in historical research, teaching, and presentation. The experts gathered here reflect upon their experiences working with new technologies, share their ideas for best practices, and assess the implications of—and imagine future possibilities for—new methods of historical study. Among the experimental topics they explore are the use of augmented reality that empowers students to challenge the presentation of historical material in their textbooks; the application of seeing computers to unlock unusual cultural knowledge, such as the secrets of vaudevillian stage magic; hacking facial recognition technology to reveal victims of racism in a century-old Australian archive; and rebuilding the soundscape of an Iron Age village with aural augmented reality. The proposed existence of the edge and screw dislocation in the 1930s, and the subsequent work showing that dislocation theory could explain the plastic deformation of crystals, represent an important step in developing our understanding of materials into a science. The continued work involved with characterization of dislocations and linking them to a variety of physical properties in both single and poly crystals have made enormous progress over the past 50 years. It is rare to find a technical application involving a material with any crystal structure that is not impacted by dislocations; mechanical properties, massive phase transformations, interphases, crystal growth, electronic properties, the list goes on. In many systems the properties is controlled by the formation of partial dislocations separated by a stacking fault; for example plastic deformation via deformation twinning. And finally, giant strides have been made in characterization and modeling of systems containing dislocations. The Special Issue on “Crystal Dislocations” is intended to provide a unique international forum aimed at covering a broad range of results involving dislocations and their importance on crystal properties and crystal growth. Das Abwasserabgabengesetz regelt die erste Emissionsabgabe mit Anreizfunktion in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Trotz der intensiven umweltpolitischen Diskussion über Emissionsabgaben wurden bislang nur Untersuchungen vorgestellt, die die Wirkungsweise der Abwasserabgabe vor Beginn der Abgabepflicht erfassen. Es wird deshalb ein Konzept der Erfolgskontrolle entwickelt, mit dem die Zielerreichungen festgestellt, exogene Einflußgrößen sowie der Gesetzesvollzug berücksichtigt und Ursache-Wirkungs- Zusammenhänge durchleuchtet werden. Eine empirische Untersuchung ermittelt die Gesetzeswirkungen in der Papierindustrie.

Durch simultane Kompression und Kühlung eines Gas-Dampf-Gemischs in einer Flüssigkeitsring-Vakuumpumpe tritt Aerosolbildung aufgrund homogener Keimbildung auf. Neben experimentellen Ergebnissen aus Versuchen an einer Pilotanlage liefert die Arbeit einen Modellansatz zur Beschreibung der schnelle Zustandsänderung und des Übersättigungsaufbaus in der Pumpe.

Mittlerweile ist das Normalarbeitsverhältnis in vielen Bereichen von neuen Formen der Arbeit abgelöst worden: Industrielle Produktion ist weitgehend automatisiert oder in Niedriglohnländer verlagert, prekäre Arbeitsverhältnisse haben Hochkonjunktur und die Arbeitslosigkeit hat sich auf einem hohen Niveau eingependelt. Die Beiträge des Bandes nehmen diese Tendenzen auf und liefern Impulse für die Gestaltung des Lebens und Arbeitens in Europa.
