This book is a collection of contributions by the Italian scholarship fellows at the Deutsches Historisches Institut of Rome over the last decade. It is intended as a tribute to one of the leading mediaevalists at international level, a scrupulous and sensitive scholar of Italian history. Over and above all this, it is a sign of gratitude from the young academics who have been able to consolidate their research thanks to such scholarships. Consequently the 14 contributions that make up the book do not share the academic orientation of any particular school, but range over various research sectors and different chronological periods.Il volume, che raccoglie i contributi di ex borsisti italiani dell'ultimo decennio del Deutsches Historisches Institut di Roma, vuole essere un omaggio a uno dei medievisti più noti a livello internazionale e all'attento e sensibile studioso della storia italiana, ma soprattutto un segno di gratitudine di giovani studiosi che con tale borsa hanno potuto consolidare i loro percorsi di ricerca. Expansion of water resources is a key factor in the socio-economic development of all countries. Dams play a critical role in water storage, especially for areas with unequal rainfall and limited water availability. While the safety of existing dams, periodic re-evaluations and life extensions are the primary objectives in developed countries, the design and construction of new dams are the main concerns in developing countries. The role of dam engineers has greatly changed over recent decades. Thanks to new technologies, the surveillance, monitoring, design and analysis tasks involved in this process have significantly improved. The current edited book is a collection of dam-related papers. The overall aim of this edited book is to improve modeling, simulation and field measurements for different dam types (i.e. concrete gravity dams, concrete arch dams, and embankments). The articles cover a wide range of topics on the subject of dams, and reflect the scientific efforts and engineering approaches in this challenging and exciting research field.

The words hydro, phobic and philic are derived from Greek and they mean water, fear and adoration respectively. These words are being used to define the interaction of water and other materials. As an example, these words are being used in classification of liquids and solids based on their solubility in water, as well as classification of solid surfaces regarding to their wettability. A lot of surfaces in the nature have Superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties. For example the wings of a butterfly, leaves of some plants, including cabbage and Indian Cress, have the mentioned properties. The best example is the LOTUS leaf.
