Yeast Biotechnology 2.0

Yeasts are truly fascinating microorganisms. Due to their diverse and dynamic activities, they have been used for the production of many interesting products, such as beer, wine, bread, biofuels, and biopharmaceuticals. Saccharomyces cerevisiae (brewers’ or bakers’ yeast) is the yeast species that is surely the most exploited by humans. Saccharomyces is a top-choice organism for industrial applications, although its use for producing beer dates back to at least the 6th millennium BC. Bakers’ yeast has been a cornerstone of modern biotechnology, enabling the development of efficient production processes. Today, diverse yeast species are explored for industrial applications. This Special Issue “Yeast Biotechnology 2.0” is a continuation of the first Special Issue, “Yeast Biotechnology” (https://www.mdpi.com/books/pdfview/book/324). It compiles the current state-of-the-art of research and technology in the area of “yeast biotechnology” and highlights prominent current research directions in the fields of yeast synthetic biology and strain engineering, new developments in efficient biomolecule production, fermented beverages (beer, wine, and honey fermentation), and yeast nanobiotechnology.]
Virus-Like Particle Vaccines

The structure, uniformity, stability, and functions of virus-like particles (VLPs) have encouraged scientists to utilize them as a unique tool in various applications in biomedical fields. Their interaction with the innate immune system is of major importance for the adaptive immune response they induce. The innate immune cells and molecules recognize and interact with VLPs on the basis of two major characteristics: size and surface geometry. VLP-based vaccines against hepatitis B, human papilloma, malaria, and hepatitis E have been developed and are available in many countries around the world. Given the inherent immunogenicity of VLPs, they render themselves ideal for the development of new vaccines against infectious diseases as well as noncommunicable diseases, such as chronic inflammation or cancer. This Special Issue is designed to provide an up-to-date view of the latest progress in the development of VLP-based prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines and technologies for their generation.

Diagnosis, Screening and Treatment of Abdominal, Thoracoabdominal and Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms

This book considers mainly diagnosis, screening, surveillance and treatment of abdominal, thoracoabdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms. It addresses vascular and cardiothoracic surgeons and interventional radiologists, but also anyone engaged in vascular medicine. The high mortality of ruptured aneurysms certainly favors the recommendation of prophylactic repair of asymptomatic aortic aneurysms (AA) and therewith a generous screening. However, the comorbidities of these patients and their age have to be kept in mind if the efficacy and cost effectiveness of screening and prophylactic surgery should not be overestimated. The treatment recommendations which will be outlined here, have to regard on the one hand the natural course of the disease, the risk of rupture, and the life expectancy of the patient, and on the other hand the morbidity and mortality of the prophylactic surgical intervention. The book describes perioperative mortality after endovascular and open repair of AA, long-term outcome after repair, and the cost-effectiveness of treatment.

Optimale Auslandsverschuldung bei potentiellen Schuldendienstproblemen

Die aktuelle Schuldenkrise hat abermals gezeigt, daß Abweichungen von vereinbarten Schuldendienstzahlungen und somit Schuldendienstprobleme inhärente Begleiterscheinungen internationaler Kreditbeziehungen sind. Aufbauend auf der Hypothese, daß die Existenz potentieller Schuldendienstprobleme die Kreditwürdigkeit eines Landes und damit die Bedingungen der Auslandskreditaufnahme negativ beeinflußt, liefert die vorliegende Arbeit eine wirtschaftstheoretische Analyse optimaler Wachstums- und Auslandsverschuldungsprozesse. Unter Verwendung ausgewählter Indikatoren potentieller Schuldendienstprobleme als Determinanten des vom Schuldnerland zu zahlenden Kreditzinses wird die Problematik einer optimalen Auslandsverschuldung im Rahmen dynamischer Optimierungsmodelle erörtert. Hierbei zeigt sich insbesondere, dass auch in dezentral organisierten Volkswirtschaften korrigierende Interventionen in den marktwirtschaftlichen Lenkungsmechanismus notwendig werden können, um das volkswirtschaftlich optimale Verhalten individueller Entscheidungsträger herbeizuführen.
