Glass fibres are melt-spun, silica-based inorganic materials. Their main application is in glass fibre-reinforced composites, which account for more than 90% of all fibre-reinforced composites currently produced. Nevertheless, improvement of the key properties of composites remains challenging. The objective of this reprint is to focus on actual research topics related to glass fibres comprising multifunctional nanostructured surfaces, e.g., graphene, which can lead to electrically conductive fibres and their interphases in composites that are capable of uptake under a variety of mechanical, chemical, humidity, and thermal conditions for in situ sensing functions. Sizing of glass fibres help to protect the filaments from failure during processing and improves wetting and adhesion strength. Furthermore, the interphase may be varied by suppressing or promoting heterogeneous nucleation of a thermoplastic matrix and, thus, the transcrystalline layer can improve the mechanical performance. Improved interfacial shear strength was shown with chitosan as a coupling agent in phosphate glass fiber/polycaprolactone composites. Modulus mapping of plasma-synthesised interphases in glass fibre/polyester composites was used to examine the local mechanical properties across the interphase region. In addition, numerous analytical techniques were applied to investigate changes within the surface of unsized boron-free E-glass fibers after thermal conditioning at temperatures up to 700 °C.

Jewish-Muslim Intellectual History Entangled unearths forgotten texts that once belonged to the library of the Karaite community in Cairo. Consigned to oblivion for centuries, many of these manuscripts were sold in the second half of the nineteenth century to the National Library of Russia in St Petersburg, where they remained inaccessible to most scholars until the end of the Cold War.The texts from the Karaite library cover a remarkable spectrum of medieval literary genres and scholarly disciplines, spanning works by Jewish, Muslim and Christian authors, in both Hebrew and Arabic. As such, they provide unique access to an otherwise lost body of literature from the medieval Islamicate world.This timely volume presents, for the first time, edited fragments of six texts by adherents of the Muʿtazila, a school of rational theology that emerged in the eighth century CE, including Karaite copies and recensions of works by Muslim authors, notably ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Hamadhānī and ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿīd al-Labbād, as well as original Jewish Muʿtazilī treatises. The collection is concluded by an anonymous Rabbanite refutation of the highly influential polemical tract against Judaism, entitled Ifḥām al-yāhūd.This collection offers unprecedented insights into the intellectual crossroads between Muslims and Jews of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. It will be an invaluable resource to students and scholars engaged with this period of history.

This final text in the Zakon Series on Mathematics Analysis follows the release of the author'sBasic Concepts of Mathematicsand theaward-winningMathematical Analysis Iand completes the material on Real Analysis that is the foundation for later courses in functional analysis, harmonic analysis, probability theory, etc. The first chapter extends calculus ton-dimensional Euclidean space and, more generally, Banach spaces, covering the inverse function theorem, the implicit function theorem, Taylor expansions, etc. Some basic theorems in functional analysis, including the open mapping theorem and the Banach-Steinhaus uniform boundedness principle, are also proved. The text then moves to measure theory, with a complete discussion of outer measures, Lebesgue measure, Lebesgue-Stieltjes measures, and differentiation of set functions. The discussion of measurable functions and integration in the following chapter follows an innovative approach, carefully choosing one of the equivalent definitions of measurable functions that allows the most intuitive development of the material. Fubini's theorem, the Radon-Nikodym theorem, and the basic convergence theorems (Fatou's lemma, the monotone convergence theorem, dominated convergence theorem) are covered. Finally, a chapter relates antidifferentiation to Lebesgue theory, Cauchy integrals, and convergence of parametrized integrals.
