The research topic of this Special Issue will consider (i) the design of nanostructured boron nitride nanostructures with controlled crystal structures, porosity, and dimensionality, (ii) the functionalization of boron nitride, and (iii) prospective applications of boron nitride nanostructures and materials. Die Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil im staatlichen Umverteilungssystem. Dennoch wurde ihren Umverteilungswirkungen sowohl in der politischen Diskussion als auch in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung bisher wenig Beachtung geschenkt. In dieser Arbeit soll daher untersucht werden, wie die GKV-Finanzierung stärker an ihren Distributionszielen ausgerichtet und somit ihre Verteilungseffizienz erhöht werden kann. Es werden zunächst adäquate Kriterien zur Bewertung und ein Konzept zur Messung der Umverteilungen entwickelt. Damit werden die Wirkungen im heutigen System und von ausgewählten Reformen untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen der Untersuchung werden abschließend Rahmenbedingungen für eine zukunftsorientierte Finanzierungsreform abgeleitet.

Ongoing urbanization and ever-growing harmful environmental impacts from urban areas necessitate a sustainability transformation in cities. However, cities are also centers of wealth creation and consumption, which both drive environmental degradation. It is clear that cities need to re-establish themselves as low-energy/low-carbon systems, but the transformation is complex in many ways and time is running out. This Special Issue, “Energy Efficient Cities of Today and Tomorrow”, seeks to provide a more profound understanding of the future energy requirements of urban areas and low-energy and low-carbon cities. The published papers range from macro-level assessments of cities manifesting themselves as forerunners in their environmental work to micro-level studies of pro-environmental attitudes and their impacts on individual emissions, a carbon footprint impacts of sharing of goods and services.

This open access book provides an in-depth look into the background of rule of law problems and the open defiance of EU law in East Central European countries. Current illiberal trends and anti-EU politics have the potential to undermine mutual trust between member states and fundamentally change the EU. It is therefore crucial to understand their domestic causes, context conditions, specific processes and consequences. This volume contributes to empirically informed theory-building and includes contributions from researchers from various disciplines and multiple perspectives on illiberal trends and anti-EU politics in the region. The qualitative case studies, comparative works and quantitative analyses provide a comprehensive picture of current societal, political and institutional developments in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Through studying similarities and differences between East Central European and other EU countries, the chapters also explore whether there are regional patterns of democracy- and EU-related problems. Exploring indigenous life projects in encounters with extractivism, the present open access volume discusses how current turbulences actualise questions of indigeneity, difference and ontological dynamics in the Andes and Amazonia. While studies of extractivism in South America often focus on wider national and international politics, this contribution instead provides ethnographic explorations of indigenous politics, perspectives and worlds, revealing loss and suffering as well as creative strategies to mediate the extralocal. Seeking to avoid conceptual imperialism or the imposition of exogenous categories, the chapters are grounded in the respective authors’ long-standing field research. The authors examine the reactions (from resistance to accommodation), consequences (from anticipation to rubble) and materials (from fossil fuel to water) diversely related to extractivism in rural and urban settings. How can Amerindian strategies to preserve localised communities in extractivist contexts contribute to ways of thinking otherwise?

The essential trace element zinc plays indispensable roles in multiple cellular processes. It regulates a great number of protein functions, including transcription factors, enzymes, adapters, and growth factors as a structural and/or catalytic factor. Recent studies have highlighted another function of zinc as an intra- and intercellular signaling mediator, which became recognized as the “zinc signal”. Indeed, zinc regulates cellular signaling pathways, which enable conversion of extracellular stimuli to intracellular signals, and controls various intracellular and extracellular events, and thus zinc mediates communication between cells. The zinc signal is essential for physiology, and its dysregulation causes a variety of diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, osteoarthritis, dermatitis, and dementia.This Special Issue focuses on crucial roles of zinc signaling in biological processes in molecular and physiological basis, addressing the future directions and questions underlying this unique phenomenon. Because there is growing interest and attention in physiopathological contribution of zinc signal, we believe this Special Issue will provide very timely information on it and thus should appeal to a wide range of readers.

The issue of the middle class has seen a recovery of interest in public opinion in the last decade, especially in light of the problems connected with the transition to flexible capitalism and the advent of the economic crisis. In the scientific debate, it has been present since the dawn of modern sociology as a phenomenon difficult to frame from the theoretical point of view and even more difficult to empirically investigate. Starting from these premises, the volume offers a critical reinterpretation of classic and contemporary authors and contributions, focusing its analysis on the role played by the middle classes themselves in the process of change, trying to identify and highlight the inter-connections between the size of structure, identity and action.

This open access book introduces a general framework that allows natural language researchers to enhance existing competence theories with fully specified performance and processing components. Gradually developing increasingly complex and cognitively realistic competence-performance models, it provides running code for these models and shows how to fit them to real-time experimental data. This computational cognitive modeling approach opens up exciting new directions for research in formal semantics, and linguistics more generally, and offers new ways of (re)connecting semantics and the broader field of cognitive science.The approach of this book is novel in more ways than one. Assuming the mental architecture and procedural modalities of Anderson’s ACT-R framework, it presents fine-grained computational models of human language processing tasks which make detailed quantitative predictions that can be checked against the results of self-paced reading and other psycho-linguistic experiments. All models are presented as computer programs that readers can run on their own computer and on inputs of their choice, thereby learning to design, program and run their own models. But even for readers who won't do all that, the book will show how such detailed, quantitatively predicting modeling of linguistic processes is possible. A methodological breakthrough and a must for anyone concerned about the future of linguistics! (Hans Kamp) This book constitutes a major step forward in linguistics and psycholinguistics. Dazu kamen die Neuigkeiten aus der Universitätsstadt Göttingen wie die Nachrichten vom Tode berühmter Professoren oder die Zurschaustellung des Nashorns Clara. Erdbeben, Nordlichter, heftige Unwetter – nicht zuletzt die eigenen Erfahrungen des Siebenjährigen Krieges wurden verzeichnet. Reskripte, Dekrete oder Ausschreibungen von Kollekten lassen erkennen, wie weltliche und kirchliche Verwaltungen mit der Armut und dem geringen Alphabetisierungsgrad der Landbevölkerung umgingen. Die Vielzahl der Themen, die die Pastoren berührten, sowie statistische Angaben (Bevölkerungszahlen und Preise) machen die Chronik zu einem zeitgeschichtlichen Dokument.
