Cornelius van Baerle, a respectable tulip-grower, lives only to cultivate the elusive black tulip and win the magnificent prize for its creation. But after his powerful godfather is assassinated, the unwitting Cornelius becomes caught up in deadly political intrigue and is falsely accused of high treason by a bitter rival. Condemned to life imprisonment, his only comfort is Rosa, the jailer’s beautiful daughter, and together they concoct a plan to grow the black tulip in secret. Dumas’s last major historical novel is a tale of romantic love, jealousy and obsession, interweaving historical events surrounding the brutal murders of two Dutch statesmen in 1672 with the phenomenon of ‘Tulipomania’ that gripped seventeenth-century Holland. This new translation follows the unabridged edition of 1865 and includes a chronology and list of further reading. In his introduction, Robin Buss discusses Dumas' use of elements from the history of the Dutch Republic, ‘Tulipomania’ and the paintings of the period, and places the novel in the context of Dumas' life and career.

Key to China's plans to promote rural development is the de-marginalisation of the countryside through the incorporation of rural areas into the urban-based market-oriented financial system. For this reason, Chinese development planners have turned to microcredit-i.e. the provision of small-scale loans to 'financially excluded' rural households-as a means of increasing 'financial consciousness' and facilitating rural de-marginalisation. Drawing on years of in-depth fieldwork in rural China, this book examines the formulation, implementation and outcomes of government-run microcredit programmes in China-illuminating the diverse roles that microcredit plays in local processes of socioeconomic development and the livelihoods of local actors. It details how microcredit facilitates de-marginalisation for some, while simultaneously exacerbating the marginalisation of others; and exposes the ways in which microcredit and other top-down development strategies reflect and reinforce the contradictions and paradoxes implicit in rural China's contemporary development landscape.

Post-colonial theory recognizes that European and American scholars have traditionally defined the themes that are of interest in literary criticism; in Moroccan studies, these themes have tended toward questions of migration, identity, secularism, and religious fanaticism typically questions regarding Morocco in its relationships with colonizing nations. This book intends to re-define the themes of interest in Moroccan studies, looking toward more local themes and movements and relationships of sub-cultures and languages within Morocco. Questions in this volume regard concepts of the self, conflicting discourses, intersections of self-identity and community, and Moroccan reclamation of identity in the post-colonial sphere.

These photographers developed and implemented physiognomic and ethnographic photography, and, through a Selbstgleichschaltung (a self-co-ordination with the regime), continued to practice as photographers throughout the twelve years of the Third Reich.The volume explores, through photographic reproductions and accompanying analysis, diverse aspects of photography during the Third Reich, ranging from the influence of Modernism, the qualitative effect of propaganda photography, and the utilisation of technology such as colour film, to the photograph as ideological metaphor. Unter dem Schlagwort «Maschinensteuer» werden seit Ende der siebziger Jahre alternative Bemessungsgrundlagen für die Arbeitgeberbeiträge zur Rentenversicherung diskutiert. Dabei dominieren beschäftigungspolitische und fiskalische Aspekte. Die Anhänger einer Umstellung des Arbeitgeberanteils auf die Wertschöpfung befürchten, dass lohnbezogene Beiträge verstärkte Rationalisierungsinvestitionen und damit eine Zunahme der Arbeitslosigkeit nach sich ziehen. Ausserdem rechnen sie mit einer Destabilisierung der Rentenfinanzen aufgrund einer langfristig sinkenden Lohnquote und einer unzureichenden Akzeptanz demographisch bedingter Beitragserhöhungen. Der Verfasser setzt sich mit den theoretischen Grundlagen der Kritik an der lohnbezogenen Beitragsbemessung auseinander und zeigt, dass die vorgetragenen Einwände einer gesamtwirtschaftlichen Analyse nicht standhalten.
