Cancer has been a patient-specific and difficult-to-treat disease for decades, resulting in more deaths since 1900 than all other diseases except cardiovascular diseases. As societies around the world continue to shift towards an aging population, the social and economic burden created by cancer will only rise in the coming decades, necessitating continued improvement in our cancer therapies. Remarkably, in the late 1800s, bone surgeon William Coley serendipitously discovered that bacteria could be administered to patients as an effective (and sometimes toxic) form of cancer therapy known as "Coley's Toxins". His discoveries unknowingly led to two fields of cancer therapy that have been in development for decades and are now leading to significant improvements in therapy for cancer patients: immune-based and toxin-based therapies for cancer. Articles included here discuss the discoveries that emerged from Coley's Toxins that enable us to harness the immune system and microbial toxins to combat cancers, as oncology shifts from a field dominated by chemotherapy for most of the 20th century to biologic therapies that will dominate the 21st century.

Die akute Wohnraumverknappung Ende der achtziger Jahre veranlaßte den Gesetzgeber zu einer Reihe von Maßnahmen im Rahmen der Einkommensteuer. Im Vordergrund stand das Ziel der raschen Vergrößerung des Wohnraumangebotes. Die Förderung erfolgt mit Milliardenaufwand. In dieser Arbeit wird untersucht, inwieweit diese Mittel effizient eingesetzt werden, wem diese Maßnahmen hauptsächlich zugute kommen und ob sie mit den Zielen der Einkommensteuer vereinbar sind. Formale Inzidenzüberlegungen stehen im Vordergrund. Die Maßnahmen werden qualitativ erörtert, daneben werden die Subventionswirkungen auch quantitativ anhand von Investitionsmodellen ermittelt.

The first fully-fledged example of revenge tragedy, the genre that became so influential in later Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, The Spanish Tragedy (1589) occupies a very special place in the history of English Renaissance drama. Hieronimo, Knight-Marshal of Spain during its war with Portugal, fails to obtain justice when his son is murdered for courting Bel-Imperia, the Duke of Castile's daughter, and decides to take justice into his own hands. In a scene replete with meta-theatrical implications, Hieronimo and Bel-Imperia stage a playlet with Portuguese and Spanish nobles as actors, stabbing them with real 'fake' daggers before they kill themselves. This edition, which appends the scenes that were added in 1602, discusses Elizabethan attitudes to revenge, the Senecan features of the play and the significance of the Anglo-Spanish conflict in the 1580s.
