To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the seminal 1993 quantum teleportation paper, we are pleased to present research works, reviews, and stories about quantum communication, quantum entanglement, and quantum teleportation: (1) How was quantum teleportation invented? (2) Which teleportation experiments were performed at the Sapienza University in Rome? (3) Can we use joint measurements to generate nonclassical correlations? (4) How is classical sampling related to quantum entanglement? (5) How is classical communication related to a special quantum ensemble? (6) How can simplifying a quantum key distribution protocol make it insecure? (7) Can we teleport a two-qubit quantum state using a nonsymmetric channel? This book includes submissions by some of the most prominent quantum teleportation contributors, including Gilles Brassard, Francesco De Martini, Nicolas Gisin, and William K. Wootters, as well as additional researchers, all presenting their up-to-date insights regarding quantum communication.

Our lives are being transformed by the interplay between mobile networks, wireless communications, and artificial intelligence. This transformation is an outcome of the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) concept and advancements in computer architecture that translate into high computing power, high-performance processing, and huge memory capacities. In addition to the IoT, cyber-physical systems aim for the seamless integration of physical systems with computing and communication resources. Furthermore, in urban areas, the integration of “software-defined sensor networks” and “sensing as a service” concepts with legacy WSN-based systems is leading to the transformation of conventional city services towards smart cities. Smart energy, smart driving, smart homes, smart living, smart governance, and smart health are just a few services that smart cities can offer. This book focuses on novel solutions for wireless sensor and actuator networks in smart cities. This Special Issue invites academic and industry researchers in computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, and communication engineering, as well as ICT industry engineers and practitioners, to contribute original articles in all aspects of wireless sensor networks and actuator systems for smart cities.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their vertical/lateral heterostructures are currently the subject of massive research interests, both for fundamental science and for technological applications in diverse fields, such as electronics, optoelectronics, quantum metrology, spintronics, membranes, energy conversion/storage, and sensing. Integration of 2D materials within real device structures currently represents the main challenge to move from the laboratory stage to industrial applications, especially in the fields of electronics/optoelectronics.This Book is a collection of 9 papers, covering the different key topics of this rapidly developing research field. These include: synthesis of 2D materials, progress in relevant processing issues (contact, doping and mobility engineering), advanced characterization techniques, novel device applications based on the integration of these 2D materials. Many of the papers of this collection are review papers, providing the general introductory information and a broad overview of the most recent advances in the specific topic. Hence, this book can serve both as a general introduction for non-experts in the field and as a guide for scientists/engineers working in the field of 2D materials integration.
This Special Issue will consist of selected papers from the Sustainable Asia Conference (SAC) 2014, an international conference which was held in Nanchang, China, from April 23–25, 2014. SAC 2014 is a leading conference for presenting novel and fundamental advances in Sustainable Development issues in Asia. The purpose of the conference is for scientists, scholars, engineers, and students from universities and research institutes around the world to present ongoing research activities, so as to promote global research networking in the sustainable development area. This conference provides opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face to face, to establish research or business relations, and to find global partners for future collaboration. The scope of this Special Issue encompasses topics related to sustainable development and management at both the macro- and micro-levels in Asian countries.
While the economic growth renaissance in sub-Saharan Africa is widely recognized, much less is known about progress in living conditions. This book comprehensively evaluates trends in living conditions in 16 major sub-Saharan African countries, corresponding to nearly 75% of the total population. A striking diversity of experience emerges. While monetary indicators improved in many countries, others are yet to succeed in channeling the benefits of economic growth into the pockets of the poor. Some countries experienced little economic growth, and saw little material progress for the poor. At the same time, the large majority of countries have made impressive progress in key non-monetary indicators of wellbeing. Overall, the African growth renaissance earns two cheers, but not three. While gains in macroeconomic and political stability are real, they are also fragile. Growth on a per capita basis is much better than in the 1980s and 1990s, yet not rapid compared with other developing regions. Importantly from a pan-African perspective, key economies-particularly Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa-are not among the better performers. Looking forward, realistic expectations are required. The development process is, almost always, a long hard slog. Nevertheless, real and durable factors appear to be at play on the sub-continent with positive implications for growth and poverty reduction in future.
