Molecular Magnets

CC BY-NC-ND

Molecular magnets show many properties not met in conventional metallic magnetic materials, i.e. low density, transparency to electromagnetic radiation, sensitivity to external stimuli such as light, pressure, temperature, chemical modification or magnetic/electric fields, and others. They can serve as “functional” materials in sensors of different types or be applied in high-density magnetic storage or nanoscale devices. Research into molecule-based materials became more intense at the end of the 20th century and is now an important branch of modern science. The articles in this Special Issue, written by physicists and chemists, reflect the current work on molecular magnets being carried out in several research centers. Theoretical papers in the issue concern the influence of spin anisotropy in the low dimensional lattice of the resulting type of magnet, as well as thermodynamics and magnetic excitations in spin trimers. The impact of external pressure on structural and magnetic properties and its underlying mechanisms is described using the example of Prussian blue analogue data. The other functionality discussed is the magnetocaloric effect, investigated in coordination polymers and high spin clusters. In this issue, new molecular magnets are presented: (i) ferromagnetic high-spin [Mn6] single-molecule magnets, (ii) solvatomagnetic compounds changing their structure and magnetism dependent on water content, and (iii) a family of purely organic magnetic materials. Finally, an advanced calorimetric study of anisotropy in magnetic molecular superconductors is reviewed.

CC BY

"Passion for learning has become a key concept in the politics of education. We want to establish schools where students are motivated, enthusiastic and feel a desire to learn. To achieve this on behalf of all students, an emphasis has to be placed on schools where students can experience mastery on the basis of their individual qualifications. Variation in instruction is crucial for students to feel mastery and thus the desire to learn more.A significant springboard for increased desire to learn can be found in enthusiasm. The enthusiastic teacher often receives a good deal of deserved attention. Only when students become enthusiastic about learning can beneficial learning outcomes arise. In The Enthusiastic Student the authors demonstrate how instruction that incorporates wonder, investigation and activation can lead to more enthusiastic students. This anthology includes 12 peer-reviewed chapters written by authors who lecture in a broad range of subjects at Nord University’s Faculty of Education and Arts. The book is in two parts. The first part opens with introductory chapters that explain the concepts of wondering, investigative and activating instruction, and what distinguishes these three approaches from each other. In addition, the basic principles and overall perspective behind the choices of instructional form and the relationship to the student which will influence the learning outcomes in each case, are also explained. This is essential information when it comes to evaluating teaching practices: Why did the plan function well? Why did it not?Part two of the book presents the different wondering, investigative and activating working forms. Some of the methods are presented within the context of one or two subjects; other methods are presented more generally. In these chapters, the reader will find examples that illustrate motivation theory, more insight into the value of interdisciplinary work, and possible effects we can achieve with teaching activity that is not necessarily out after that one right answer. This anthology will be of interest to students and teachers seeking to create more enthusiasm among students in the teaching situation.""Lærelyst er nå blitt et sentralt begrep i skolepolitikken. Boka er delt i to deler.

Multiscale Entropy Approaches and Their Applications

CC BY

Multiscale entropy (MSE) measures to evaluate the complexity of time series by taking into account the multiple time scales in physical systems were proposed in the early 2000s. Since then, these approaches have received a great deal of attention and have been used in a wide range of applications. Multivariate approaches have also been developed. The algorithms for an MSE approach are composed of two main steps: (i) a coarse-graining procedure to represent the system’s dynamics on different scales and (ii) the entropy computation for the original signal and for the coarse-grained time series to evaluate the irregularity for each scale. Moreover, different entropy measures have been associated with the coarse-graining approach, each one having its advantages and drawbacks. In this Special Issue, we gathered 24 papers focusing on either the theory or applications of MSE approaches. These papers can be divided into two groups: papers that propose new developments in entropy-based measures or improve the understanding of existing ones (9 papers) and papers that propose new applications of existing entropy-based measures (14 papers). Moreover, one paper presents a review of cross-entropy methods and their multiscale approaches.
