Protektion ist ein Schlüsselbegriff der politisch-sozialen Sprache der europäischen Neuzeit. Der Band rückt die sich wandelnden Semantiken und Praktiken des Schutzes vom 16. bis frühen 20. Jahrhundert erstmals systematisch in den Blick. Die Beiträge spannen einen weiten Bogen von Jean Bodins Definition von Protektion als ungleiche Allianz über das völkerrechtliche Institut des Protektorats bis hin zu den gegenwärtigen Debatten um eine responsibility to protect. Ausgewählte Fallbeispiele zeigen auf, dass politische Schutzverhältnisse nicht nur ein Macht- und Legitimationsinstrument der Großen waren. Sie stellten auch eine Option für mindermächtige Akteure dar, um ihre Unabhängigkeit zu wahren oder sich gegen Übergriffe des eigenen Herrschers zur Wehr zu setzen. This open access book explores the conceptual challenges posed by the presence of migrants with irregular immigration status in Europe and the evolving policy responses at European, national and municipal level. It addresses the conceptual and policy issues raised, post-entry, by this particular section of the migrant population. Drawing on evidence from different parts of Europe, the book takes the reader through philosophical and ethical dilemmas, legal and sociological analysis to questions of public policy and governance before addressing the concrete ways in which those questions are posed in current policy agendas from the international to the local level. As such this book is a valuable read to researchers, practitioners and policy makers as well as to students working on irregular migration in Europe in a comparative and/or country based perspective.

Intermediate Ancient Greek Language is a series of Lessons and Exercises intended for students who have already covered most of an introductory course in the ancient Greek language. It aims to broaden and deepen students' understanding of the main grammatical constructions of Greek. Further attention is given to grammatical forms to illustrate their functions. In the Lessons, tragedy, comedy, historiography, oratory and philosophy are sources for dramatic material. The Cases have been deliberately placed late in the series of Lessons 36 to 41; students by now will be prepared to analyse Case usage. Consideration of prepositions in Lesson 42 naturally follows the Cases. Lesson 43, on correlative clauses, links with adjectival and adverbial constructions in previous Lessons. The final Lesson 44 deals with exclamations. Throughout the book, the author relies on genuine Greek sources for the passages in the Lessons and Exercises.

Since the end of the Cold War almost all European countries have reformed their armed forces, focusing on downsizing, internationalization and professionalization. This paper examines how these changes in security sector governance have affected the normative model underlying the military's relationship to democracy, using the image of the 'democratic soldier'. Drawing on a comparative analysis of 12 post-socialist, traditional and consolidated democracies in Europe, the different dimensions of the national conception of soldiering are analysed based on the official norms that define a country's military and the ways in which individual members of the armed forces see their role. Cases converge around the new idea of professional soldiering as a merging of civilian skills with military virtues in the context of the military's new post-Cold War missions. Yet despite this convergence, research also shows that specific aspects of national traditions and context continue to influence the actual practice of soldiering in each case. The contradictions that result between these old and new visions of the role of the military and the soldier illustrate the tensions that exist between political goals and defence reform dynamics.

Unfinished Revolution is the first study to gather nineteenth-century representations and performances of Haitian sovereignty in the Atlantic world. This book proposes a stochastic simulation process as an efficient approach to consumption simulation. The process complements the explicit transient analysis. Thereby, it takes into account statistically evaluated vehicle and route data and calculates a probability distribution of the energy savings which can be achieved by specific measures.
