This book studies literary sociability during the belle époque (1890-1914) by comparing and relating organizations of authors with intellectual sociability in general. Drawing on a combination of methods including social network analysis, existing histories of Dutch and French speaking literature are questioned. This study shows, for instance, how author’s societies and literary journals were functional in the symbolic struggle between ‘dilettante’ writers on the one hand and self declared ‘professional’ authors on the other. It concludes that Belgian authorship was shaped within a social space that was much broader than the national social space, especially as far as the social construction of the Belgian author-intellectual was concerned. As such, being an intellectual became an important category of personal identity.

Die Alterung der westlichen Industrienationen führt zu einer erheblichen Belastung der Sozialversicherungssysteme. Der Autor zeigt dies am Beispiel der bundesdeutschen Rentenversicherung auf. Die ökonomische Analyse ergibt, daß die deutsche Gesetzliche Rentenversicherung (GRV) deutliche Anreize zur Frühverrentung setzt, deren Abbau das Sozialversicherungssystem merklich entlasten würde. Das Rentenzugangsverhalten in Deutschland wird in einem Verweildauermodell mikroökonometrisch untersucht. Der Autor schlägt eine neuerliche Rentenreform in Form einer geänderten Rentenberechnung vor und zeigt anhand von Simulationsrechnungen deren Entlastungswirkungen für die GRV-Finanzen auf. Die Arbeit behandelt ein aktuelles Feld der sozialpolitischen Diskussion und leistet einen wissenschaftlichen Beitrag zur Versachlichung der öffentlichen Diskussion.

This publication presents results of an interdisciplinary field study assessing the contribution of biological and inorganic processes in the mobilisation and accumulation of arsenic in groundwater of the Bengal Delta Plain, West Bengal. Investigations were focussed on the distribution of arsenic in sediments and shallow groundwater of two representative study sites. All results were combined in an effort to develop a conceptional model describing the mobility of arsenic in West Bengal aquifers.

Foreign judgesThe Influence of Swiss and German-Austrian judges upon jurisprudence in the principality of Liechtenstein, 1939-45The principality of Liechtenstein has been a small country possessing limited resources. In matters of jurisprudence this meant adopting Austrian and Swiss legal codes and, along with local lawyers, electing attorneys from both neighboring countries as judges in Liechtenstein. While this practice worked during times of peace, it became tenuous during the era of National Socialism, and connected to the problem of potential national socialist influence upon the appointment of judges and on the practice of law. The annexation of Austria by the “Third Reich” turned Austrian judges working in Liechtenstein into “German” judges, who dispensed justice according to Nazi law in their home-land, but according to Liechtenstein law within the principality.Can a political influence upon these judges be shown? Did a national socialist spirit pervade Liechtenstein jurisprudence and the laws enacted during that time? What was the stance taken by the judges who were Swiss? The author discusses the peculiarities of justice in Liechtenstein during the Second World War.

Academia is standing at a junction in time. Behind lies the community of the curious, ahead the mass and the market. This book joins in a growing stream of works that explore the vicissitudes of present-day European universities in what Bauman coined as liquid times. Here, a number of concerned (engaged) European scholars attempt to defend and brush up academic core values and practices, starting from their own life worlds and positions in higher education. They share the view that there is no point in turning back, nor in mechanically marching straight on. Above all, they uphold that there is no alternative to treasuring academia as a space for thinking together. Hopefully the fruit of this sine qua non invites to think with, and envision academic activism.
