This book consists of nine chapters devoted to representations of melancholia in 19th-century art and literature. A noteworthy feature of the book is its use of concepts from later works by Sigmund Freud, Jean Clair, Jean Starobinski, Julia Kristeva and others. Those concepts elucidate further contexts of the notion of melancholia, which are presented not in isolation but juxtaposed with the philosophical background of the concept (starting from Hippocrates and Aristotle). Thus, the book not only provides a survey of images and modes of behaviour of 19th-century individuals, but also discusses the meanings of melancholia as they appeared in European culture over time.

Die Gründung der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen beruhte auf einem weitgehend neuen Konzept, das vom Geist der Aufklärung durchzogen auf Toleranz gründete und jeglichem Extremismus und Sekretierertum abhold war. Diesem Prinzip war auch die Medizinische Fakultät von Anfang an verpflichtet. Durch das von ihr vertretene Ausbildungsmodell des praktisch-klinischen Unterrichts am Krankenbett gelang es bereits in der Aufbauphase entscheidende Impulse zu setzen, die für die medizinische Ausbildung über Göttingen hinaus richtungsweisend wurden. Damit trug die Medizinische Fakultät wesentlich dazu bei, den internationalen Ruhm der Georgia-Augusta zu begründen. Der Abriss mit seiner vielschichtigen Realität vermittelt Einsichten in das Selbstverständnis, die Selbstwahrnehmung und die Selbstdarstellung der Medizinischen Fakultät in ihrer Geschichte.

"Empirical research is carried out in a cyclic way: approaching a research area bottom-up, data lead to interpretations and ideally to the abstraction of laws, on the basis of which a theory can be derived. Deductive research is based on a theory, on the basis of which hypotheses can be formulated and tested against the background of empirical data. Looking at the state-of-the-art in translation studies, either theories as well as models are designed or empirical data are collected and interpreted. However, the final step is still lacking: so far, empirical data has not lead to the formulation of theories or models, whereas existing theories and models have not yet been comprehensively tested with empirical methods.This publication addresses these issues from several perspectives: multi-method product- as well as process-based research may gain insights into translation as well as interpreting phenomena. These phenomena may include cognitive and organizational processes, procedures and strategies, competence and performance, translation properties and universals, etc. Empirical findings about the deeper structures of translation and interpreting will reduce the gap between translation and interpreting practice and model and theory building. Furthermore, the availability of more large-scale empirical testing triggers the development of models and theories concerning translation and interpreting phenomena and behavior based on quantifiable, replicable and transparent data."

The Constitution of 1 May 1934 saw an attempt made in Austria to create an alternative to parliamentary democracy in the form of an order based on the professional “Stand” (corporation). The failure of this attempt was due to the nature of the “Stand” itself which, as something organically grown, is not accessible to institutionalisation. In reality, the corporation was just a means of enabling conservative thinking, in a much wider sense, to influence politics, a hangover of traditional forms of rule.Mit der Verfassung vom 1. Mai 1934 wurde in Österreich versucht, der parlamentarischen Demokratie in Gestalt einer berufsständischen Ordnung eine Alternative entgegenzusetzen. Die Versuche ständischen „Aufbaus“ gingen indes ins Leere, weil der Stand seinem Wesen nach etwas natürlich Gewachsenes, einer Institutionalisierung nicht Zugängliches ist.
