This book presents computer programming as a key method for solving mathematical problems. There are two versions of the book, one for MATLAB and one for Python. The book was inspired by the Springer book TCSE 6: A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python (by Langtangen), but the style is more accessible and concise, in keeping with the needs of engineering students. The book outlines the shortest possible path from no previous experience with programming to a set of skills that allows the students to write simple programs for solving common mathematical problems with numerical methods in engineering and science courses. The emphasis is on generic algorithms, clean design of programs, use of functions, and automatic tests for verification.

Christopher Morley (1890-1957) was an American journalist, novelist, essayist and poet. He went to New College, Oxford University for three years on a Rhodes Scholarship, studying modern history. He moved to Philadelphia where he got his start as a newspaper reporter and then columnist for various publications. In 1920, he returned to New York City and took a job writing the column The Bowling Green for the New York Evening Post. He was one of the founders and long-time contributing editor of the Saturday Review of Literature. Out of enthusiasm for the Sherlock Holmes stories, he became the founder of the Baker Street Irregulars and wrote the introduction to the standard omnibus edition of The Complete Sherlock Holmes. Author of more than 100 books of essays, poetry, and novels, he is probably best known as the author of Kitty Foyle (1939), which was made into an Academy Award-winning movie. His works include Parnassus on Wheels (1917), Shandygaff (1918), The Haunted Bookshop (1919), Where the Blue Begins (1922), Thunder on the Left (1925), The Trojan Horse (1937), and The Old Mandarin (1947).

The book contains the results of a research on the outcomes of a communication campaign of the risks related to exposure to chemicals. The initiative, aimed at students of 3rd, 4th and 5th high school classes of the City of Rome, explored the initial level of skills and knowledge on the chemical hazard, and then assessed the increase as a result of an information campaign conducted by experts of Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA), in order to spread knowledge on the subject and form a group of aware young citizens.

Aufbauend auf der Analyse der Wechselkurspolitik im Transformationsprozeß ausgewählter mittel- und osteuropäischer Länder werden wechselkurspolitische Optionen vor und nach einem EU-Beitritt untersucht. Ein zentrales Ziel ist es, eine angemessene und länderindividuelle Strategie für die Währungsintegration der EU-Aspiranten herauszuarbeiten, die zugleich unter Verwendung eines Indikatorenschemas mit mikro- und makroökonomischen Kriterien empirisch gestützt wird. Als Leitmotiv dienen die Folgen der – für Ökonomien im Aufholprozeß charakteristischen – Aufwertung des realen gleichgewichtigen Wechselkurses. Es wird gezeigt, daß angesichts eines signifikant hohen Flexibilitätsbedarfs der Währungen eine vorzeitige Euro-Anbindung im Grundsatz nicht angemessen ist. Zugleich wird auf die Notwendigkeit verwiesen, die rechtsverbindlichen Vorgaben der EU in einigen monetären Bereichen zu ergänzen.

Modern technology has eliminated barriers posed by geographic distances between people around the globe, making the world more interdependent. However, in spite of global collaboration within research domains, fragmentation among research fields persists and even escalates. Disintegrated knowledge has become subservient to the competition in the technological and economic race, leading in the direction chosen not by reason and intellect but rather by the preferences of politics and markets. To restore the authority of knowledge in guiding humanity, we have to reconnect its scattered isolated parts and offer an evolving and diverse but shared vision of objective reality connecting the sciences and other knowledge domains and informed by and in communication with ethical and esthetic thinking and being. This collection of articles responds to the second call from the journal Philosophies to build a new, networked world of knowledge with domain specialists from different disciplines interacting and connecting with the rest of the knowledge-producing and knowledge-consuming communities in an inclusive, extended natural-philosophic, human-centric manner. In this process of reconnection, scientific and philosophical investigations enrich each other, with sciences informing philosophies about the best current knowledge of the world, both natural and human-made, while philosophies scrutinize the ontological, epistemological, and methodological foundations of sciences.

Eugenia Smagina (Евгeния Б. Смaгина) first published her grammar of the Old Nubian language in 1986 in Russian. For more than thirty years the work has remained untranslated, even though the late Gerald M. Browne affirmed that “this lucid, well-argued presentation should be available to all Nubiologists and ought therefore be translated into a western language.”Slavicist José Andrés Alonso de la Fuente has prepared a first English translation of this concise but indispensable work, which forms a necessary counterpart to Browne’s classic Old Nubian Grammar. The grammar is divided into sections on script, lexicon, morphology, and syntax, and is followed by the analysis of a sample text, known as The Miracle of St. Mēnas.Smagina’s The Old Nubian Language provides an excellent first introduction into the grammar of this medieval Nilo-Saharan language.

Veel weten we over deze elites niet, want sociologisch onderzoek naar Nederlandse elites blijft schaars. De onderwerpen zijn divers: adel, rechterlijke macht, een koloniale economische elite, de internationalisering van de economische elite en de opkomst van een nieuwe lokale elite. Alle artikelen benadrukken zowel de verandering als de continuïteit: een adellijke titel helpt nog steeds bij het verwerven van een elitepositie bijvoorbeeld. De koloniale elite verdween niet plotseling toen Indonesië onafhankelijk werd. De komst van allochtone gemeenteraadsleden is slechts de laatste ontwikkeling in de samenstelling van raden.
