In the early 20th Century, exhibitions and international fairs were a favoured field for Swiss businesses that wished to conquer new territories in foreign markets. The way in which Switzerland was represented abroad challenged traditional regional construction by substituting more geometrical lines, thereby replacing the ‘chalet style’. The ‘genesis’ of the Swiss style of exhibition, between commercial expansion and modern architecture, is depicted here beyond that of a purely institutional history, providing a new viewpoint into its economic and artistic aspects. Particular atten-tion is given to the role of certain ‘intermediaries’ in the creation and diffusion of a visual culture to a commercial action.Durant la première moitié du XXe siècle, les expositions et les foires internationales constituent un terrain d’affrontement privilégié entre les différents acteurs de la politique d’exposition. Alors que les entreprises suisses cherchent à conquérir de nouvelles positions sur les marchés extérieurs, la manière de représenter la Suisse à l’étranger fait particulièrement débat. Aux traditionnelles constructions régional-istes se substituent des aménagements aux lignes épurées, conçus selon les princi-pes fonctionnalistes de la « construction nouvelle ». Désigné dès le milieu des années 1930 sous le terme de « style suisse », ce nouveau visage de l’architecture d’exposition, simple et rationnel, rompt avec le vocabulaire formel du « style chalet », si souvent privilégié dans les expositions universelles du tournant du XXe siècle.Loin de constituer un phénomène isolé, ces reconfigurations témoignent d’un mouvement plus large de rationalisation de l’organisation commerciale. Dans le sillage de la Première Guerre mondiale, des publications spécialisées aux foires modernes, l’efficience visuelle devient en effet un instrument incontournable de la « lutte pour les débouchés » commerciaux.La genèse du « style suisse » d’exposition, conçue comme le fruit d’une collabora-tion étroite entre les acteurs de l’expansion commerciale et du mouvement de l’architecture moderne, est au coeur du présent ouvrage. Au-delà d’une histoire purement institutionnelle, ce livre apporte un éclairage inédit sur les enjeux économiques et artistiques de la politique d’exposition. Il prête une attention par-ticulière au rôle de certains « passeurs » dans la formulation et la diffusion d’une culture visuelle de l’action commerciale.

Among the vast body of manuscripts composed and collected by the philosopher and reformer Jeremy Bentham (1748 - 1832), held by UCL Library's Special Collections, is the earliest Australian convict narrative, Memorandoms by James Martin. This document also happens to be the only extant first-hand account of the most well-known, and most mythologized, escape from Australia by transported convicts.On the night of 28 March 1791, James Martin, William and Mary Bryant and their two infant children, and six other male convicts, stole the colony's fishing boat and sailed out of Sydney Harbour. Within ten weeks they had reached Kupang in West Timor, having, in an amazing feat of endurance, travelled over 3,000 miles (c. 5,000) kilometres) in an open boat. There they passed themselves off as the survivors of a shipwreck, a ruse which-initially, at least-fooled their Dutch hosts.This new edition of the Memorandoms includes full colour reproductions of the original manuscripts, making available for the first time this hugely important document, alongside a transcript with commentary describing the events and key characters. The book also features a scholarly introduction which examines their escape and early convict absconding in New South Wales more generally, and, drawing on primary records, presents new research which sheds light on the fate of the escapees after they reached Kupang. The introduction also assesses the voluminous literature on this most famous escape, and critically examines the myths and fictions created around it and the escapees, myths which have gone unchallenged for far too long. Finally, the introduction briefly discusses Jeremy Bentham's views on convict transportation and their enduring impact.

The thesis investigates the standard’s historical and economic backgrounds, analyses its history of application and undertakes a critical assessment based on the aforementioned factors. The thesis follows a comparative law approach and is highly interdisciplinary. Thereby it majorly contributes to the controversial topic of how industrial organisation’s findings can be made viable for the application of law in light of versatile shortcomings. It adds to a clarification of the demanding prohibition rules on exclusionary conduct by providing important insights into the application of the „as efficient competitor“ test. By doing so, it aims at attracting the interest of academic scholars as well as professionals.Der Beurteilungsmaßstab des „ebenso effizienten Wettbewerbers“ hat nicht zuletzt im Rahmen des „more economic approach“ große praktische Bedeutung für das Behinderungsmissbrauchsverbot erlangt.
