This book contains a study on fictional, imitated language. In detailed analyses it shows how Jewish figures were characterized through their language in German fiction (18th until early 20th century). It discloses which structures of this fictional language originate from the Yiddish language and which are reflexes of (the author's) orality. At the same time the study contains a comprehensive description of Western Yiddish and its grammatical structures, which are compared with German and Eastern Yiddish varieties.Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Strukturen fiktionaler, imitierender Sprache. Am Beispiel detaillierter Analysen der sprachlichen Charakterisierung jüdischer Figuren der deutschsprachigen Literatur des 18., 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts legt die Arbeit offen, welche Strukturen die jiddische Sprachrealität widerspiegeln und welche als Reflexe der (zumeist autoreigenen) Mündlichkeit gelten können. Zugleich stellt die Untersuchung eine umfangreiche grammatische Darstellung des im deutschsprachigen Raum bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert hinein verbreiteten Westjiddischen dar, dessen Strukturen sie mit denen deutscher und ostjiddischer Varietäten vergleicht.

Im Rahmen der aktuellen Modernisierungsprozesse des öffentlichen Sektors wird zu selten nach den eigentlichen Wirkungen staatlichen Handelns gefragt, wodurch permanent die Gefahr besteht, die falschen – da unwirksamen – öffentlichen Maßnahmen zu realisieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund verfolgt der Autor in seiner Arbeit das Ziel, die Etablierung wirkungsorientierter Controllingprozesse zu unterstützen, um Entscheidungen in Politik und Verwaltung konsequenter als bisher auf Wirkungen auszurichten. Bislang gelingt es in der Regel nur unzureichend, die mit einer öffentlichen Maßnahme verbundenen Wirkungen zweifelsfrei zu ermitteln und sie darüber hinaus auch noch einer objektiven Bewertung zu unterziehen. An dieser Stelle setzt die Arbeit an, indem ein standardisiertes Instrumentarium vorgestellt wird, welches eine strukturierte Identifikation und Bewertung der durch staatliches Handeln ausgelösten Wirkungen erlaubt. Der bislang eher abstrakt diskutierte Wirkungsbegriff kann durch die vorgestellte Methodik der Wirkungsanalyse leichter in bestehende Controllingprozesse eingebunden werden.

Museum Object Lessons for the Digital Age explores the nature of digital objects in museums, asking us to question our assumptions about the material, social and political foundations of digital practices. Through four wide-ranging chapters, each focused on a single object – a box, pen, effigy and cloak – this short, accessible book explores the legacies of earlier museum practices of collection, older forms of media (from dioramas to photography), and theories of how knowledge is produced in museums on a wide range of digital projects. Swooping from Ethnographic to Decorative Arts Collections, from the Google Art Project to bespoke digital experiments, Haidy Geismar explores the object lessons contained in digital form and asks what they can tell us about both the past and the future. Drawing on the author’s extensive experience working with collections across the world, Geismar argues for an understanding of digital media as material, rather than immaterial, and advocates for a more nuanced, ethnographic and historicised view of museum digitisation projects than those usually adopted in the celebratory accounts of new media in museums. By locating the digital as part of a longer history of material engagements, transformations and processes of translation, this book broadens our understanding of the reality effects that digital technologies create, and of how digital media can be mobilised in different parts of the world to very different effects.

This book offers a new analysis of the intellectual and the Chinese socialist revolution. Under the Chinese Communist Party, the intellectual was never simply an outspoken scholar, a browbeaten artist, a supportive official, or any kind of person facing an increasingly powerful political regime. The intellectual was first and foremost a widening classification of people based on Marxist thought. As the party turned revolutionaries and otherwise perfectly ordinary people into subjects identified locally as intellectuals, their appearance profoundly affected the political thinking of the party elites and how they organized the revolution, as well as postrevolutionary Chinese society. Drawing on a wide range of data, Eddy U takes the reader on a fascinating journey that examines political discourses, revolutionary strategies, rural activities, official registrations, organized protests, work organizations, and theater productions. The book lays out in colorful details the formation of new identities and new patterns of organization, association, and calculus. The outcome is a compelling picture of the mutual constitution of the intellectual and the Chinese socialist revolution, the impact of which is still visible in globalized China.

This action research jointly undertaken by the Center for Conflict Manage-ment in Butare and the Haute Ecole de Travail Social in Geneva aims at analysing and supporting pilot experiences by community actors in post-genocide Rwanda. Such experiences are analysed through dialogs involving field actors, Rwandan and Swiss researchers. Special attention is paid to managing conflicts related to identity and memory and rebuilding social solidarity among citizens. C’est là que se conjuguent, étroitement imbriqués dans le quotidien, les enjeux de la reconstruction: la lutte contre la pauvreté, la restauration de la confiance, le partage des récits qui joue un rôle décisif tant au niveau national que dans les relations intrafamiliales et entre voisins.Comment, en s’associant au sein de communautés, affronte-t-on l’ensemble de ces enjeux ? C’est ce que des chercheurs du Centre de Gestion de Conflits de Butare et de la Haute Ecole de Travail Social de Genève ont voulu éclairer à travers la coopération qu’ils ont instaurée avec trois associations de la société civile, impliquant différents groupes divisés par le génocide. En développant une recherche-action, les chercheurs ont mis en place au sein de trois projets pilotes, un dispositif de formation des acteurs et de renforcement de leurs capacités pour qu’au delà de la réconciliation, ceux-ci tracent le chemin d’une véritable citoyenneté démocratique.
