"Beat You To The Other Side" Beat you to the other side, That's what she cried, As she jumped in and swam across the river, I stepped in and felt all over my body a shiver, She was artfully bold, To swim in water so cold, But she did, And I could only do as she said, Because I didn't want her to think I was weak, Or my backbone had a yellow streak, After all that would hurt my pride, So I jumped in and headed for the other side, A swam as hard as I could, And I was doing pretty good, Until the cold got the best me, And locked up my knees, Since I could not swim anymore I sank, As my friend watched from the other bank, The last thing I was to see, Was my friend swimming towards me, Although my body made it to the shore, My spirit didn't for it went to heaven's door, I was glad I knew Christ was my savior, And my faith and belief in him and God never did waiver, I'm also glad I took time to pray, And asked got to wash my sins away, So when I died, I went to heaven to abide, I spent a lot of time watching below, As my friend lived her life in sorrow, Through the Crystal Sea I could see it all, I watched her rise and fall, When her life seemed to get better, Easily climbing success ladder, Then a memory from the fateful day, Would make her courage sway, Then down she would go again, Back to life of despair and sin, But after a time, Out of it with the help of God she would climb, The devil could not hold down, For she was a child God just slumming around, She still knew whom she belonged to, It was God she was forever true too, Although at times she hid from him her face, She still was living in his grace, For she still knew how to pray, And asked God to take her sins away, So although at times she wallowed in sin, She made sure she was always forgiven, She never sold her soul to Satan, For it belonged to God in heaven, And at the time of her death, She asked God to forgive her with her last breath, So as she died, The door opened to the other side, And she crossed over into the light, I was the first thing to appear in her sight, And with a smile on my face, I told her I had won the race, And beat her to the other side, As we held each other and cried, Angels came and took her before God's throne, Where she got the keys to her heavenly home,
