She loved to write music and take photos, but what she loved to do most, was paint. One day at the park, Gwen met a man dressed as a clown. “What’s your name?” Gwen asked. “I’m Narlo, the magic clown,” said the man. “I love to make children’s dreams come true.” “Mr. Narlo,” said Gwen, “I’d love to get into one of my paintings I’ve done!” “Ah - ha,” exclaimed the clown, “that I can do! What is the image of?” asked Narlo. 2 Gwen said, “it’s of a circus and in particular, an ape.” With a kick in the air, and a rub of his hat, holding onto a charm, Narlo spoke: Into the world of color and shape, created by Gwen, a circus and ape ! “Take this charm home and spill its clear liquid onto the painting. Then jump right in!” “I can’t thank you enough, Mr. Narlo!” Gwen stated. When she got home, Gwen ran straight up to her room and took down the painting of the circus and ape. 3 Spilling the clear liquid over the art, she jumped in. Inside the painting, she first recognized the sunny, cloudless sky, she had painted. Making her way towards the circus, she smiled at the exciting colors of all the rides, games and costumes. As she went to the animal show, the ring leader said in a loud and cheerful voice, “here is the elephant balancing on a ball.” And indeed, a giant grey elephant came into the circus ring on top of a ball. Next up, a horse jumped through a hoop that was on fire. Last but not least, an ape walked across the tightrope. The crowd of children were 4 silent as not to distract the ape, so he wouldn’t fall. When the ape made it to the other end, safely, the children in the audience, including Gwen, cheered with delight. After the show, Gwen made her way backstage. She introduced herself to the ape, “I’m Gwen, and I’m the creator of this world. What is your name, Mr. Ape?” “I’m Henry, pleased to meet you.” As the two of them walked, Gwen asked, “would you like to go on some rides with me, Henry?” “Of course,” said the ape. “Which one?” “The roller coaster!” said Gwen. 5 As they sat down on the ride, the roller coaster made its way up the track. To Gwen’s disappointment, it got stuck. Henry was not scared as this had happened to him before. “The ride is very moody,” said the ape, “all we have to do is cheer her up.” Henry asked, “what song would you like to hear, Miss Coaster?” To Gwen’s shock, a voice responded with , “the one about me!” Henry began to sing: The coaster chills, the coaster thrills, ten at a time no reason to whine! 6 Then at the end of the song, she began to move again. “Henry, you have saved us, now we can enjoy the ride !” said Gwen. When the y finished with the roller coaster , the ape asked what Gwen would like to do next. “How about we get some circus food?” Gwen suggested. Henry said, “I am hungry, what would you like to eat?” “Cotton candy, of course,” said Gwen. Eating their treats, they both began to change color; Gwen pink and Henry blue. “What fun this is, I love being pink,” said Gwen. “I love being blue!” exclaimed Henry. “How long does this last?” asked Gwen. 7 “For an entire day!” the ape stated. “How wonderful!” said Gwen. Then they decided they would end their day at Fiji’s comedy act. At the show, Gwen and Henry took their seats. The clown said many jokes , but o ne they both loved went like this: Riddle me this, riddle me that, who can compete, with a n enormous h at? As the day came to an end, and returning to their regular colors, Gwen said, “goodbye Mr. Henry, it’s time for me to go back home.” And going to the edge of the 8 painting, she jumped out and was back in her room again. “What a wonderful time I’ve had,” said Gwen. And with that, Gwen could hear her mother calling her down for dinner. “Be down in a second,” Gwen stated. As Gwen and her family ate dinner, she told her parents of her magical time inside her painting. “So that’s where you’ve been all day,” said her mother. “Sounds like a great time,” said her father. “It was wonderful, I loved meeting Mr. Henry, the ape. He was so nice, and we had such a fun time.” 9 After dinner, Gwen changed her clothes for bed. As she drifted off to sleep, thoughts of what her next adventure would be consumed her. When she woke up the next day, she started making sketches for her next painting, a forest filled with friendly wild animals, and lush green bushes and trees. “This is sure to be just as fun as my visit to the circus,” Gwen said to herself, as she smiled with pure joy. 10 Nopicalate Suzy Dylan loved jewelry more than anything in the world. One Saturday afternoon, Suzy and her best friend Franny went to the local ring store. “Look at this bright red ruby one,” said Franny, “isn’t it lovely?” “It really is, I wonder how much it costs?” exclaimed Suzy. The girls walked up to the register and Suzy asked for the price of the ring she loved so much. “Twenty dollars,” he said. 11 “I’ll take it.” When the girls got back to Suzy’s house, she put on the ring. Suddenly, the girls were transported to a new world. “Wow, this ring must be magic,” said Franny. The two of them could see chocolate waterfalls, a purple sun and diamond trees. In unison, the girls gasped with pleasure. Walking around this place, they met a tiny man who introduced himself as Figaro. “How do you two do today? I am the ruler of this land I call Nopicalate.” 12 “How do you do, Mr. Figaro?” asked Suzy. “Fine, just fine,” he replied. He was dressed in a pink cotton hat, and bright orange overcoat; Nopicalate was a chilly place. “Would you two young ladies like sweaters?” “Of course!” said Franny. “Follow me to the knitter we like to call Enchantra.” When they arrived at her house, she greeted them in a friendly manner. “Welcome to my home, please sit while I create wonderful 13 clothing for your time here in Nopicalate.” While the girls waited, Figaro entertained them with song and dance. One particular number the two girls enjoyed went like this: Nopicalate is fun, with its purple sun. Nopicalate is cold, yet a fun place to grow old Then Enchantra returned with a bright green dress made of the warmest furs for Suzy, and a red spotted yellow one for Franny. 14 Then the girls left the two to explore more of this lovely world. As they walked along a path, they spotted a strange looking animal. It had 6 long arms, and 3 short legs. It had a beak with black spirals on it, and two golden wings upon its back. He seemed friendly, so the young ladies weren’t afraid. “How would the two of you like to go for a ride on my back?” asked the animal. “We’d love to,” said Suzy. Hopping upon the creature, they took to the skies that as you will recall, were lit by a purple sun. 15 Through the marshmallow clouds, they could see odd looking birds, and as they flew through the chocolate waterfalls, they got a taste of this fine sugar treat. After the ride was over, they said goodbye to their friend. Taking the ring off, the girls were back in Suzy’s house. “That was so much fun, and look, our clothes are back to normal. Also, no time has passed since we’ve gone and come from Nopicalate. I’m going to love visiting that land all the time,” Suzy said. 16 “I hope I can come with you as often as possible,” remarked Franny. And then the two friends went to bed with huge smiles on their faces, to get ready for school in the morning. The next day, the two girls told all their friends about the magic ring and their adventure. Everyone was so happy they had - had a great time. Suzy promised it was a safe land and that she would take each of her friends on a trip. And Suzy was happy. 17 Kendra Dreams Kendra Martin was a 15 - year - old girl who lived with her grandmother; both her parents had passed away recently. She had so many questions that no one seemed to be able to answer. She knew she wanted a fulfilling life, but didn’t know how to achieve that. As Kendra drifted to sleep one cold December evening, soft music played in the background, keeping her calm. Sound asleep and dreaming, Kendra had visions of her mother who had passed away last year. 18 “Kendra,” her mother’s spirit said, “how are you my dear?” Kendra said, “I am so happy to see you, mom, I have so many questions. The first is, what makes a good mother?” Mrs. Martin said, “love and show respect to your children, and they will love and respect you back. The more respect you show to your kids, the more they will listen to you.” “Thank you so much, mom,” Kendra said. And with that, her mother’s spirit drifted away. Next to visit her in this dream was her father, he had passed away 3 years ago.
