IMPORTANT! Please see alternative prize destination on our website! “But you’re a radio station!” I hear you cry, “Why launch a magazine?” Well, we’re not just any radio station... we’re your radio station. If you live, work or spend any time in West Sussex we are here to serve you. At Spirit FM we pride ourselves in being the local voice for West Sussex and have been proudly serving this wonderful county for nearly 20 years. Whether it’s unrivalled local news and travel updates, entertainment news, a great mix of music, fantastic competitions or great promotions you’ll find it all on Spirit FM. We are a sucker for a good cause and give away 10% of our commercial airtime every single day to charity or not- for-profit organisations – we are a small business with a big personality and we love to use that for good and to genuinely change people’s lives. We’ve taken to print to say hello to nearly every household in our broadcast area as a reminder that we’re here for you! We know that over half of you already tune in to us on a regular basis, so if nothing else this an opportunity for me to say thank you to those people, but it also means we have to win round the rest of you to support local and make Spirit FM the number one choice for your radio entertainment. One of the best things about Spirit FM is our passion for our county; we are a truly local radio station in every sense of the word. With the exception of the chart show on a Sunday afternoon, every show you hear comes from West Sussex and is designed for West Sussex. We listen to our audience and deliver what they want from their local radio station, as we prove with ‘Sound Check’ (see the back cover for more information) where you can actually influence the music we play: something very unique in radio land. I hope you enjoy reading the magazine; meeting the presenters, perhaps trying your hand at some of the recipes and maybe winning yourself an amazing luxury holiday – but mostly I hope you tune in to Spirit FM and let us be at your service in the future. Communities paid tribute to the 11 victims in beautiful and emotional ceremonies across the county. The Shoreham Toll Bridge which overlooks the crash site on the A27 was decorated with flowers, and a candle- light vigil lit up the night sky as hundreds of people paid their respects. Thousands of pounds have also been raised by an official donation page for the victims’ families. Spirit FM received an overwhelming number of messages from grateful residents who strongly felt the 2015 Local Heroes Awards needed to recognise the hard work and dedication of the emergency services. Instead of choosing just one individual, the award went to all the men and women involved in the aftermath of the disaster. Dune Runners WE LOVE HEARING FROM LISTENERS WHO ARE TACKLING CHALLENGES FOR CHARITY. IT CAN BE AS SMALL AS A CAKE SALE TO TAKING ON THE TOUGHEST FOOTRACE ON EARTH, WHICH FIVE BUSINESSMEN FROM BOGNOR DID IN APRIL. They flew out to the Sahara Desert and took part in the Marathon Des Sables: a 150 mile trek in blistering heat. It wasn’t just for fun though, they managed to raise £22,575 for Chestnut Tree House in Arundel. Spirit FM followed them through their training, all the way through their six-day journey, and even caught up with them when they came home. We very much look forward to covering more amazing feats like this in the future. Bosham Murder IT’S A STORY THAT’S CLOSE TO HOME BOTH EMOTIONALLY AND GEOGRAPHICALLY FOR US AND OUR LISTENERS. Valerie Graves was found dead on December 30th 2013 at a house on Smugglers Lane in Bosham. The 55 year old grandmother had been murdered. Spirit FM has covered the investigation from the start and worked closely with the police. Earlier this year we were given exclusive access to a three week DNA screening process in the village to eliminate men as her killer. We continue to work hard to make sure people are kept in the loop. Gatwick Airport THIS HAS BEEN A LONGRUNNING STORY FOR SPIRIT FM. GATWICK AND HEATHROW AIRPORT HAVE BEEN BATTLING IT OUT FOR YEARS OVER PLANS FOR EXPANSION. In July this year the Airport Commission published a report naming Heathrow as the preferred choice after months of consultations. But that’s not the end of the story just yet, much to the disappointment of local campaign groups like CAGNE. The government has to make the final decision and once they do, our team will be ready to make sure you get the news fast. Pink Pub Bike Club THEY WERE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. The Pink Pub Bike Club take their superhero alter egos very seriously, so much so that they decided to cycle from The Royal Oak in Bognor all the way to Paris in full fancy dress. The team of 18 didn’t stop there though. They also decided to ride bikes that arguably weren’t built for long distance at a top price of £25. It soon became clear just how popular they’d become as word got out nationally about their big trip. Starting with a target of around £25,000, they ended up raising a whopping £107,616. Spirit FM followed their journey from the start to the finish line and even attended a cheque giving ceremony to hand over their massive donation to The Sussex Snowdrop Trust. David Cameron Visit IN THE RUN UP TO THE 2015 GENERAL ELECTION DAVID CAMERON MADE HIS WAY TO THE ROLLS ROYCE HQ IN GOODWOOD. The Prime Minister spoke on the factory floor to hundreds of employees and members of the press, including Spirit FM. As you can imagine it was a big deal for the area as he’s not an easy man to tie down. Cameron was given a tour of the building, before giving a campaign speech and answering a few questions from the audience, which were mostly to do with what football team he supports! COOK US! with RECIPES FROM SALLY’S KITCHEN WE ALL HAVE BUSY LIVES; SOMETIMES IT SEEMS EASIER TO ‘PING’ YOUR DINNER, ORDER A TAKEAWAY OR GO OUT FOR A BITE TO EAT RATHER THAN COOK! I’ve worked full time for the last 16 years so weekends are usually spent playing catch up with housework and chores, but I still love cooking and having friends round for dinner. I love trying new things and very rarely stick to the recipe completely (sometimes it really works but I’ve had a few disasters too!) What I have picked up over the years is a few easy recipes for dishes that people like, that don’t leave you stuck in the kitchen for hours while your guests are enjoying themselves! We’ve put together a starter, a main and a dessert that each serve four.We hope you’ll find them as yummy as we do! STARTER Caprese Skewers INGREDIENTS Cherry tomatoes halved (red & yellow – allow 2 per skewer) Fresh basil leaves Mozzarella pearls Parma Ham (optional) Pesto METHOD Thread your ingredients in sequence on to skewers; mozzarella, tomato (alternating colours), basil leaf, Parma ham (leave this out to make it a perfect vegetarian option) and repeat 4 times per skewer. If you cover these they will keep for a day or so in the fridge, but your tomatoes may leak a little so try not to leave them too long. Drizzle with pesto before you serve. MAIN Hake Bake with Squash & Olives INGREDIENTS 4 Hake Fillets (you can use any fish fillets, or even chicken – just remember to adjust your cooking time accordingly) 2 Red Onions (roughly chopped in to chunks) 1 Butternut Squash (cubed) 1 red pepper (diced) 1 green pepper (diced) 15 Cherry Tomatoes (halved) 500ml Passata Mixed olives (approximately 20, pitted) Olive Oil Fresh Thyme 4 tbsp. Breadcrumbs 4 tbsp. Grated Parmesan METHOD Pre-heat oven to gas mark 6 (200 ̊c or 400 ̊f). Put onions, squash and peppers in a large baking tray, drizzle with olive oil and shake. Bake for 30 minutes. (If you want to make this in advance you can let it cool and refrigerate it for a day. If you are cooking from chilled pop it in the oven for 10 minutes before you go to the next step). Add the cherry tomatoes, olives, passata and leaves from 4 stems of fresh thyme and stir, making sure the passata covers everything. Mix the breadcrumbs and parmesan together, lay your hake on top of the vegetables and press the breadcrumb mix on to the fillets. Bake for 20 minutes (until the top is just brown) and serve immediately with a green salad. DESSERT Lemon & Raspberry Baskets INGREDIENTS 100ml Lemon Curd 150ml Double or Whipping cream 4 Brandy Snap Baskets (or you can use ramekins) Fresh Raspberries (approx. 16) 20g Dark chocolate (melted) METHOD Whisk curd and cream together until it forms a creamy consistency and make it in to soft peaks (don’t stop whisking too early or it will be too runny!). Pop the mixture in to the fridge for 30 minutes (can be stored for up to 2 days). When you’re ready to serve, spoon the mixture into the brandy baskets, pop 4 raspberries on the top of each and have a bit of fun with drizzling the melted dark chocolate. Serve immediately to avoid a soggy bottom! Hake Bake Caprese Skewers PLEASE NOTE Exact cooking times can vary due to the strength of your oven and thickness of your slicing, ensure food is thoroughly cooked and piping hot before you serve. Spirit FM’s Stuart McGinley reviews Murrays at The Ship Hotel, North St, Chichester BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED FROM FLOOR TO CEILING, MURRAYS IS A WARM, INVITING AND SPECIAL PLACE TO DINE; ATTACHED TO THE SHIP HOTEL WITH NO EXPENSE SPARED MURRAYS PROVIDES AN ELEGANT, DELIGHTFUL AND COSY AMBIANCE THROUGHOUT. The pleasurable experience does not stop there with attentive, welcoming and well-presented staff it is obvious that the General Manager Patrick Burfield has spent a lot time and thought to ensure the experience is second to none. The A La Carte menu is a simple yet tasty affair with a wide selection of freshly prepared and delicious sounding dishes that would satisfy any well-travelled palate, and the traditional burger and fries is always a pleasure to see for the less adventurous. On our visit to Murrays my partner chose wild mushrooms on toast serviced with garlic butter, poached egg and truffle oil; whilst I opted for the Goats cheese crottin, cherry tomato and red onion marmalade, crispy shallots and balsamic reduction. The service was very quick and we only just had enough time to sample the delights of the comprehensive cocktail menu – I highly recommend the rhubarb flavoured “RnR”, this cocktail will get your taste buds tingling with delight. It is clear that presentation of the food is just as important as the elegant décor of the restaurant; perfectly portioned it simply adds to the experience of the rich and mouth-watering tasty food that was served. We found this to be consistent throughout our dining experience especially when moving onto the main course of breast of corn- fed chicken, pomme mousseline, wilted kale, au jus and the 8oz sirloin steak and peppercorn sauce – the two dishes were cooked to absolute perfection with our taste buds appreciating the delightful texture and tastes of the carefully selected combination of ingredients. To top the experience off the dessert menu was presented to us in a timely fashion with no pressure. The chocolate fondant and mint chocolate ice cream was always a given for my partner whilst I opted for the wild berry cheesecake – adequately portioned this topped off one of the most delightful dining experiences I have ever had from the second we entered the restaurant. Having experienced the delights and the top quality service of Murrays, it is hard to believe that the restaurant is part of a wider business of a hotel and bar; often you find similar businesses struggling to maintain high such standards that have been set by Murrays – the quality is second to none and this is a truly hidden gem of Chichester, I urge all to sample whether that be for a business engagement, romantic evening or just afternoon tea. You can contact Murrays and The Ship Hotel on 01243 778000 or find them in North Street, Chichester.
