First, I would like to welcome our participants from varied rms and institutions in the housing, construction, business industries across Africa and the world that have converge for this 15th Edition of the Abuja International Housing Show (AIHS). Special thanks to the Honorable Ministers of Housing from Nigeria and Ghana as well as our stakeholders from the international and local Built Environment and Multilateral Institution Stakeholders for their unrelenting partnership and engagement over the years and even during the strenuous circumstances brought on by the global pandemic. The global pandemic impacted the Global Housing Market and Nigeria as well and we saw the resurgence and importance of Housing not only as an investment but also as necessary and critical social infrastructure for ghting and effectively combating the spread of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Nigeria and across the world. This year theme is: “Sustainable and Resilient Housing Solution for a Post-Pandemic World”. We hope to fully explore the different innovations and requirements that can effectively position housing as a tool in combating the epidemic on the single premise that the world has nally come to the realisation of the importance of Housing and the environment and therefore Nigeria and Africa cannot be left behind so as to adequately prevent the kind of experiences witnessed in India, South Africa and other parts of the world where covid-19 is concerned. As we commence the 15th Edition of the AIHS, the importance of Housing cannot be overstated if we must accomplish social distancing and promote personal hygiene according to World Health Organisation Protocols. The AIHS 15th Edition has put in place safety protocols to facilitate a hitch free conference with zero tolerance for risky behaviour and we believe participants will be duly guided. As part of the issues that will be addressed this year is the involvement of the youth in designing the future of affordable housing and I am glad to say that we have a lot in store in terms of the youth housing design competition which is a rst of its kind in Nigeria and need we say Africa. Also, part of the issues to be addressed at this year’s conference will be the matter of housing data for effective planning and delivery. To this end, the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS), National Population Commission (NPC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Nigeria Mor tgage Renance Company (NMRC), Federal Ministry of Finance and other critical stakeholders will deliberate on Nigeria’s housing decit gures and the way forward in terms of the segmentation of our housing needs and what is expected and required both from an urban and rural perspective using both local and international best practice. For us in the housing and built sector, and particularly the Housing Development and Advocacy Network we remain unrelenting in advocating for the development and rollout of affordable housing by government and the private sector and will like to commend the response of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Ministry of Finance and other stakeholders towards the establishment of N200Billion National Social Housing Programme being managed by the Family Homes funds to Deliver 300,000 housing units for low income earners across the federation. We are glad that the government nally heard our clamor but like the popular Charles Dickens character Oliver Twist, we still believe that more is needed and required if we are to effectively tackle the growing demand. It is against this background that we commence the 15th Edition of the AIHS and it is my honor and privilege to commend the board of trustees and organizers of this years event with the theme for fostering progressive conversation that will spur us all – public and private sector players - into taking the required actions to move this sector forward. The challenges that we face as a country in the housing sector are enormous. Our housing decit though currently being contested is estimated to be over 17million housing units is still the highest in the continent and the current efforts to resolve this remains inadequate. As daunting as Nigeria’s housing challenges, it is not insurmountable but rather holds great promise and opportunities. History has handed us - the Stakeholders, policy makers, and government functionaries - the opportunity to make a difference in our efforts to use the AIHS platform to continue to make impact. We are also encouraged by the enthusiasm and commitment shown by State Governors nationwide addressing the challenges with Housing particularly in the Northeastern parts of Nigeria where Housing is in high demand on account of the ongoing social issues and we would like to cease the opportunity provided by the AIHS to recognise the efforts of State governments towards driving increased housing development for the internally displaced and socially disadvantaged. It is a sign of the increasing consciousness by political leaders on the need to take more aggressive action towards engendering housing development. As an industry, we also see a lot of positive trends. This includes the emergence of strong innovations like alternative nance (non-interest loans) amongst other initiatives that are currently being deployed to in stimulating affordable housing development and mortgage lending. These are all historic interventions with great potential for boosting housing delivery. In conclusion, I would once again like to say, that I believe after 15 Years of the AIHS we are beginning to see initiatives and collaborative programs, that will holds promise in leading the housing sector to the path of improved housing development. I thank you all for your time and wish us all a productive and engaging deliberation and God bless the Federal republic of Nigeria. WELCOME 14 1.
